John 12:1–22

[Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this thursday morning december 10th this is where every weekday morning at 9am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together this morning we are at john chapter 12. we only have like 22 verses so it's a lot shorter than the last couple of days thanks for joining me this morning why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the rich blessing it is to get to be in your word we pray now that you would bless us as we read your word pray that you would apply it to our hearts that we would know your glory and follow after you in jesus name amen well let me go ahead and jump into god's word this morning let's bring it up here and we are at john chapter 12 verses 1 through 22 real quick before we read if you could let facebook jump in john chapter 12 the first 22 verses then six days before the passover jesus came to bethany where lazarus who had been dead whom he had raised from the dead there they made him a supper and martha served but lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him then mary took a pound of very costly of spikenard anointed the feet of jesus and wiped his feet with her hair and the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil but one of the disciples judas iscariot simon's son who would betray him said why was this fragrant oil not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor this he said not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief he had the money box and he used to take what was put in it but jesus said let her alone she has kept this for the day of my burial for the poor you have with you always but me you do not always have now a great many of the jews knew that he was there and they came not for jesus's sake only but that they might also seize lazarus whom he had raised from the dead but the chief priest plotted to put lazarus to death also because on account of him many of the jews went away and believed in jesus the next day a great multitude that had come to the feast when they heard that jesus was coming to jerusalem took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him and cried out hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord the king of israel then jesus when he had found a young donkey sat on it as it is written fear not daughter of zion behold your king is coming sitting on a donkey's colt his disciples did not understand these things at first but when jesus was glorified then they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done these things to him therefore the people who were with him when he called lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead for witness for this reason the people also met him because they heard that he had done this sign the pharisees therefore said among themselves you see that you are accomplishing nothing look the world has gone after him now there were certain greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast then they came to philip who was from bethsaida of galilee and asked him saying sir we wish to see jesus philip came and told andrew and in turn andrew and philip told jesus well what an amazing passage we have for us this morning i mean obviously every passage in the gospels is amazing but we need to ask ourselves first a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about this first story verses 1 through 10 what is this about well we have a contrast here don't we we have jesus with lazarus the one he has just raised from the dead and jesus is there with him and and martha and mary make this food for him i mean typically after someone dies you have a wake you know typically after someone dies you have a funeral meal something like that but here they're having a celebratory meal jesus has raised lazarus from the dead and there while they are excited and rejoicing what does mary do mary takes a pound of very costly oil of spark not sparknoy i can't talk today spikenard oil and she anoints jesus's feet and she wipes his feet with her hair what this what a beautiful sign that mary does for jesus you know pouring out her heart in gratitude and in love for jesus and you have this wonderful outpouring of appreciation and and of thankfulness and then you have the thief and the covetousness and the betrayer judas why didn't this get sold for 300 dinar to be given to the poor and his heart wasn't even in the right place right john tells us here right the narrative the the narrator steps back a little bit says he didn't actually care about the poor no he he was just a thief he was the church treasurer who was grabbing out the money box for himself and jesus shuts them down right jesus just says leave her alone but it's interesting what he says here for the let this let her alone she has kept this for the day of my burial for the poor you have with you always but you do not but me you do not have always isn't this interesting jesus is there with lazarus the one who was dead and jesus raised from the dead and yet jesus is now telling them he's going to die yeah they're going to go into jerusalem but jesus is never going to come back to mary and martha's house in the same way jesus is is going away and so this is something that's serious right and so uh we find out right after that verses 9 and 10 what does it say but that there were the chief priests plotted not only put to put jesus to death but even lazarus right they wanted to seize lazarus lazarus and jesus because on account of this man who was raised from the dead even more people are following jesus but jesus still is going to be faithful he's going to go to the to the temple he's going to go celebrate the passover and while he's there the crowd has been growing they've heard about lazarus they are excited about what's going on and when jesus is going into the city the people take down these palm branches and they give him the red carpet treatment right and they cry out out of the depths of their hearts this joyful praise hosanna blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord the king of israel right finally the true son of david has come finally the messiah is here finally the one who will make everything right again is here and jesus is that one that it was prophesied about fear not daughter of zion behold your king is coming sitting on a donkey's cold and the disciples don't understand what's going on until after jesus is raised again from the dead can you imagine the excitement the pitch of fever how everybody is excited the king is coming in right the messiah has arrived but what they don't understand is that he's going to earn his crown through blood he is going to sit upon his throne as the lamb who is slain he's going up to celebrate the passover but indeed he himself would end up being the passover lamb he is our paschal lamb and his fame would spread far and wide even here at the very end we find that there are gentiles who ask we would like to see jesus so what is this about jesus's triumphal entry the king arriving and mary anointing jesus for his burial what are the best verses for these sections well i think in my bible i'm going to underline verse 13. i think that's what i'm going to do there i'm going to highlight that in my bible and i'm also going to underline uh where jesus talks about in verse 7 and 8 about what mary is doing what are we called to do though see what are we called to do in response to this do you want to see jesus are you one who cries out hosanna are you one who cries out the king has arrived are you one that goes to jesus christ the paschal lamb your passover the one who takes away your sins do you come to him do you want to see jesus do you believe that he raised lazarus from the dead and that he was just a foreshadowing of what god would do that jesus would be raised from the dead but he wouldn't ever die again but that jesus christ would ascend up into heaven and even now says at the right hand of god the father almighty and that it is in jesus christ alone that we have eternal life that's what we're called to believe do you want to come and see jesus let's pray now father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray father that you would bless us and care for us
