Scripture Passage

The Opposition at the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem

22 Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. 27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”

31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32 Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”

34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39 Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. 41 Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” 42 And many believed in Him there.

your word we pray that you might let us know your will let us know who you are we pray that you would apply these words to our hearts and that we would treasure them and we would believe who you are in jesus name amen all right let's go ahead and get into god's word this morning so john chapter 10 verses 22 through 42. uh let's go ahead and before we start why don't you go ahead and hit that like button down below let facebook and youtube know that this is helpful content and that you'd like to see it on a regular basis all right let's jump in there john chapter 10 beginning at verse 22. now it was a feast of dedication in jerusalem and it was winter and jesus walked in the temple in solomon's porch then the jews surrounded him and said to him how long do you keep us in doubt if you are the christ tell us plainly jesus answered them i told you and you do not believe the works that i do in my father's name they bear witness of me but you do not believe because you are not of my sheep as i said to you my sheep hear my voice and i know them and they follow me and i give them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand my father who has given them to me is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of my father's hand i and my father are one then the jews took up stones again to stone him jesus answered though many works i have shown you from my father for which of these works do you stone me then jesus answered the jews answered him saying for a good work we do not stone you but for blasphemy and because you being a man make yourself god jesus answered them is it not written in your law i said you are god's if he called them gods to whom the world to whom the word of god came and the scriptures cannot be broken do you say of him whom the father sanctified and sent in the world you are blaspheming because i said i am the son of god if i if i do not do the works of my father do not believe me but if i do though you do not believe me believe the works that you may know and believe that the father is in me and i in him therefore they sought again to seize him but he escaped out of their hands and he went away again beyond the jordan to the place where john was baptizing at first and there he stayed then many came to him and said john performed no signs but all these things that john spoke about this man were true and many believed in him there well what a wonderful passage we have for us this morning we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words right so a what is this about well uh the jews don't believe again in in the margin of my bible i might say the jews do not believe that jesus is the son of god right they they come out outright in the beginning and they're like how long are you going to keep us in suspense man if you're if you are the christ show it to us right and we might not understand exactly what's going on there but the reality is that they thought of the christ as the messiah the anointed king who was going to come and overthrow the romans and reestablish the throne of david and it was going to be just like it was in david and solomon's day no more overlords no more tribute no more far away caesars that's what they were expecting and jesus says look at the signs around you look around you look at all look at all the works right but you're not going to believe why what is what does he say in verse 27 you verse 26 you do not believe because you are not my sheep as i said to you my sheep hear my voice and i know them and they follow me jesus is is telling them that they're not they're not believing because they're not his but he goes even further than that right he says i and my father are one that's what he says in verse 30 and what are their responses they want to take up stones and they want to kill him now now again throwing stones at someone isn't just like chasing them out of town it's seizing him holding him down and throwing stones until he's dead this is an execution they want to destroy jesus why she says for which of my for which of my works are you gonna stone me and they say it's not because of your works that we're gonna stone you but it's because you make yourself one with god and he says well hold on what did even the scriptures say and jesus goes and he talks about the sun or about the the psalms or it says that uh that they are also as it says here in verse 34 jesus said is it not written in your law i said you are god's right jesus says that in a sense they're not gods in the way that we want to think about gods but but they are rulers they are elohim they they are the the ones who are supposed to be god's representatives on the earth and jesus is that chief representative now his he is if we want to go theologically onto logically different than us because he's fully god and fully man but here jesus is pointing out to them hold on you don't even understand what the scriptures are talking about for you and so he he's talking about all this and and they're still upset they don't believe him they want to kill him but they can't he escapes out of their hands he runs or he doesn't run but he escapes he leaves he goes out and many believe in him even out by the jordan where john had first been baptizing so a what is this about jesus is one with the father and not everyone's going to accept this that jesus is one with his father and not everyone's going to accept that what's the best verse for this well i think in my bible i'm going to underline uh verse 25 through 27. you might even want to say verse 28 right i mean verse 8 what what a great promise verse 28 is and i give them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand i'm going to go ahead and underline that as well in my bible oh that was a funky underline what happened there i don't know if that shows up on your screen but it's showing up funky on my screen you might underline where he says that he and his father won let me know would you would you highlight something else in your bible last we need to ask yourself see calling what are we called to do in response to this do you believe that jesus christ is one with his father do you believe in the works that testify about him do you believe that in jesus christ those who are blind see those who were lame walked those who were dead like lazarus were raised from the grave that jesus came and did the works of his father perfectly and that if we are his sheep if we believe in him as verse 28 says there that no one will ever snatch us out of his hand what a great promise we have in jesus christ let's pray this let's go ahead and pray lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that we might believe in jesus christ and have eternal life we pray that we might follow after him and that you might keep us eternally in the palm of his hand in jesus name amen well i pray that you go forth today in the grace and in the peace of jesus christ as you believe in the one and only son bye
