Scripture Passage

King James Version (KJV)

1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

1:44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

1:46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

1:47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

1:48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

1:50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

1:51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2:2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

2:3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

2:6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

2:7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

2:8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

2:9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

2:10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

2:11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

2:12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

2:13 And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

get into god's word together so why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll get into god's word tonight lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us as we read it that you would open our eyes and ears that we might understand the things that you have for us today in jesus name amen amen i just realized laundry's going on in the background so if you hear the dryer going sorry about that hey terry good to see you all right well dad do you want to read verses 43 through 51 sure you bet this is philip and nathanael the following day jesus wanted to go to galilee and he found philip and said to him follow me now philip was from besteda and sit the city of andrew and peter philip found nathanael and said to him we have found him of whom moses in the law and also the prophets wrote jesus of nazareth the son of joseph and nathanael said to him can any good thing come out of nazareth philip said to him come and see jesus saw nathanael coming toward him and he said to him or of him behold an israelite indeed in whom is no deceit nathanael said to him how do you know me jesus answered and said to him before philip called you when you were under the fig tree i saw you nathanael answered and said to him rabbi you are the son of god you are the king of israel jesus answered and said to him because i said to you i saw you under the fig tree do you believe you will see greater things than these and he said to him most assuredly i say to you hereafter you shall see heaven open in the angels of god ascending and descending upon the scene upon the son of man all right so if you had to write in one sentence what this passage is about what would you put in the margin of your bible what this is about uh most assuredly i say to you hereafter you shall see heaven open in the angels of god ascending and descending on son of man maybe that's not right um where was that at i think it's when jesus answered back when he said surely you're the king of israel when he said because i he was a question the form of a question because i said to you i saw you under the fig tree do you believe yeah yeah i was actually going to say that was what i was going to underline here in my bible too is the best verse behold an israelite in whom there is no behold philip uh how do you know me before philip called you when you were under the fig tree i saw you nathanael answered and said to him rabbi you are the son of god you are the king of israel jesus answered and said to him because i said this to you i saw you under the fig tree do you believe you will see greater things than these yeah i think those that's like the heart of what this is getting at right so so john our jesus here is is interacting with nathanael yeah isn't it interesting that even though jesus is there jesus sees him under the fig tree omnipotent he sees all yeah yeah yeah right so jesus knows everything exactly he's he's those omnis right omnipotent omniscient and omnipresent yeah so uh we we will say i i think in the margin of my bible i'm going to write here um jesus calls nathanael that's what i'm going to write in the margin of my bible is what that that's about but i'm also next to that going to say nathanael calls jesus jesus king right he recognizes right away and so the next part let's go ahead and jump in there we have two sections for us tonight so let's go ahead and jump in there so verses 1 through 10 and on the third day there was a wedding in cana of galilee and the mother of jesus was there now both jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding and when they ran out of the wine the mother of jesus said to him they have no wine jesus said to her woman what does what does your concern have to do with me my hour has not yet come his mother said to the servants whatever he tells you to do do it now there were set there six water pots of stone according to the manner of purification of the jews containing 20 or 30 gallons of peace jesus said to them fill the water pots with water and they filled them to the brim and he said to them draw some out now and take it to the master of the feast and they took it when the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made to wine and did not know where he had come from from but the servants who had drawn the water knew the master of the feast called the bridegroom and he said to him every man at the beginning sets out the good wine and when the guests have have well drunk then the inferior you have kept a good wine until now i'm going to go ahead and read the next two verses too even though it's not technically here hey sylvia good to see you this beginning of signs jesus did in cana of galilee and manifested his glory and the disciples or and his disciples believed in him after this he went down to capernaum he his mother his brothers and his disciples and they did not stay there many days so what is this part about what would you say if you had one sentence to write what this is about um i i think it has to do with his servants um or the servants who knew um the miracle that they're they're the ones that knew what jesus had done um i think it's kind of corollary with jesus telling his mother that it's not his time yet but yet he he blessed the setting he blessed the wedding with the wine yeah what do you think of his you know it says in verse four he said to her woman what does your concern have to do with me why do you think he calls her woman there doesn't that kind of sound like derogatory misogynistic or something hmm no i i you know honestly um i don't know the significance of that and i didn't take it that way maybe because i've heard the verse so many times but no i don't know what what do you think yeah i i think it's it's kind of like in the south right if our kids were to talk to olivia in the south they would always say yes ma'am ma'am what does what why why are you asking me right this is a this is a term of endearment not of of talking down to his mother um yeah i think that this is dealing with jesus's beginning of his miracles right his honoring his mother as well as uh when his disciples right uh verse 11 this this beginning of signs jesus did in cana of galilee and manifested his glory and his disciples believed in him so uh calling what are how do you think this applies to your life what are you called to do in response to these two stories i believe in jesus christ just that he is one he is the king and um he is with all him all things are possible he is the god of miracles yeah yeah good yeah so jesus is the god of miracles jesus is the king of israel jesus is the messiah the one sent by god and and these signs are attesting to him i mean this is incredible right he takes these big huge jars of of water and he turns big jars 20 to 30 gallons and changes them into wine right and and the the ruler of the feast doesn't know what's going on but the people but the servants who drew the water they knew what was going on yeah i think that was the obscurity of the knowledge it was only a small group of people knew and that that kind of goes back to the woman it's not my hour yet what is your concern he wasn't yet really um ready but he was always ready yeah he's not broadcasting his ministry to the world yet right yeah yeah good good well do you believe right do you believe in these promises do you believe that jesus is the king of israel the one who is sent by god do you believe that he is the messiah the one who has died for our sins and rules above the nations now as our king forever i think that's what we're called to believe today why don't we pray lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the blessing it is to sit at your feet lord we do believe and when we disbelieve lord we pray that you would help our disbelief we pray that you would give us confidence and you would give us strength and that we would have a hope that would endure into our dying breath lord we pray that you would bless us tonight please prepare us to worship you tomorrow as we gather together with your people in jesus name amen well may god bless you tonight and may he fill your heart with the joy and peace of jesus christ bye
