Welcome to Coffee and devotions. This is where every weekday morning you and I we get together we have a little bit of coffee, we get into God's word and we've grown our love for the Lord together. And this year, 2023. Lord willing, we'll make it from Genesis to Leviticus. There you go. We'll see if the new intro sticks. Well, it's great to be with you. While we have some coffee, we'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. Lord, You are a good and gracious God. You fill our days with your blessings. So we pray now that as we read your word that you would let us understand it, and that it would help us both and the way we think, the way we believe in the way we live in Jesus's name, Amen. So we are at the end of an era. We are at the end of one of the patriarchs life. So let's go ahead and open our Bibles to Genesis chapter 25. Genesis 25. And it's amazing how kind of things break down. Sometimes there's a lot to read about one thing and sometimes there's a little bit to read about a big thing. And today's a little bit to read about big things. So we're Jennifer Genesis 25, seven through 11. So only a few verses this morning. This is the sum of the years of Abraham's life which he lived 175 years. Then Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age. An old man and full of years and was gathered to his people and his sons, Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah which is before mammary in the field of F Ron, the son of zohore. The Hittite the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. There Abraham was buried with er and Sarah his wife, and it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son, Isaac, and Isaac dwelt at Bear, la Hi, Roy. Well, three questions every day. Hey, what's this about? b What's the best versus summarizes and see what are we called to do in response to these words? What's this about? Well, we remember that the book of Genesis is broken up into a series of different toilet notes or genealogies. In this is the end of Abraham's we're gonna find that that Abraham, this is the closing out of his story. The closing out of the first Patriarch who receives the promises of God. And as we read this story, there's just pointed things out it says, you know, Abraham died he was 175 years old, a good old age. 175 years old. I don't know what happens to people when they're that old, but I'll tell you what, I've been around plenty of people who are near 100. And when I've talked to some of them, they say, they'll joke around and say, Well, maybe I'll make it to Methuselah. And then a lot of them will say, No, I have lived that long. So I don't know if our bodies are just decaying more if our minds are becoming that much more frail because of the fall and the impacts of that. But he dies at 175 years old, and he breathed his last and died in a good old age and old man full of years and was gathered to his people. So this is the end of an era and then it says that he's buried. Where's he buried? He's buried in the only piece of land he owns you remember he was promised all the land. And yet the only piece that he owns is Macola. Where he buried his wife Sarah, in there. His sons his boys bury him. But the question was, you know, after verse 10, there's a long pause between verse 10 and 11. What happens with the promise? What happens with the covenant? Was this all just a figment of Abraham's imagination? Did he have just maybe his, his drink before bed had gone sour? Maybe he had had some bad milk and, and now he had hallucinated, with the whole covenant between him and God, maybe, maybe he was just dreaming and had had eaten too much sugar before he had gone to bed. And it was it was just a dream about the whole God talking to him and telling him to go look up at the stars. Maybe this was all was this real? With the covenant continue and we find his yes it does. Yes, it does. And God and it came to pass after the death of Abraham that God blessed his son, Isaac. God blessed his son, Isaac. And what was in there at Bethlehem, a Roy. God had continued on in his line of blessing God had continued on in showing love to his covenant people. He had not forgotten his promises. He had not forgotten his ways. So he continues on. Now, something I do need to talk about here is notice what this doesn't say. It says he died a good old age but it doesn't say he died a perfect man. The eulogy we find here for Abraham is his good old age, not his good old behavior. It's not saying that oh, you know, he was the perfect one. But when we when we read of the death of, of Abraham we go, man, that was an interesting story. But you know, that was a guy who had a lot of really big problems. I wonder how his son Isaac is going to be I wonder if that one will be perfect and we're gonna find out he's not. And then we're gonna get to his next son, Jacob and Esau. We're gonna wonder Oh, is that one finally going to be perfect? Like, is that one going to be the one that you would expect to receive the promises and he won't be. And we'll keep going down the line. Just a spoiler alert as you go. Through the books of the Old Testament again and again. David okay man that made me for this was finally the righteous one of the won't be. And then Solomon Oh, this is the wise one is he's going to finally be the one who will be perfect and No, he won't be because the Old Testament is a entire Bible is a story about real people. Real life, people like you people like me, who might die of a good old age but who are not good of our own selves. There's only one there's only one that would eventually come from the line of Abraham through the line of David, of the Virgin Mary. And he's the one who had come not of ordinary generation, but have a miraculous birth. And it's he would be tested in every way as we are, as Abraham was, and yet without sin. And so we come to the end of an era, the end of Atolla dote, and we see that God's grace is not dependent upon man's righteousness, but upon his choice
in his life. I don't know why he chose Abraham. I don't know why he chose me. I don't know why I chose you. But thank God he shows mercy and kindness. And he blesses to 1000 generations that those who love Him and keep His commandments. Now, that doesn't mean that we keep them perfectly, totally Christ who does.
But thank God it's not dependent on our perfection. And thank God we have Jesus Christ. Who made Abraham's faith perfect. What's the best verse that summarizes well in my Bible, I have verse eight in verse 11, underlined in my Bible, what would what would you underline in your Bible? Well, I'll see calling. What are we called to do?
Walk by Faith. Some of you have been walking by faith for a long time.
I pray that you have a testimony of walking by faith and I do pray. I do you pray that God would even walk with your children and dwell with them and bless them and that they would learn to walk in his ways also. Why don't we pray that this morning Let's pray for God to allow us to run the race with perseverance but also that you might be with our children. Father, we thank you so much. That by some miracle of yours, you have chosen to love us and certainly not because we're perfect or good enough. But because you're gracious. Father, we pray that Your Holy Spirit might enable us empower us to persevere. Lord, we pray that You would give us strength to find in youth our refuge, but also to come before you and to find the ability to continue to go Lord, we pray that you would please bless our children. We pray that you would be with them that you would let them love you. That they would walk in your ways, Please, Lord. For those who have children who are string. Father, would you please bring them back to yourself? Would you bring people in their lives, friends, family coworkers? Who would tell them of your word, and of your promises? And May they return to their first love? Father, please give us strength for this day in Jesus's name, Amen. May the Lord bless you may walk in the joy and peace of Jesus Christ and I'll see you.
