Accepting God’s True King

Well, hey, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at 1 Samuel, the second half of chapter 10. So Saul has been anointed. Oil poured on his head, running down his hair, and he's now going to be the commander of God's armies. And so how does he actually become king? When's it going to become public? So far, it's just him and Saul, or Samuel, who knew that. So let's have some coffee, we'll pray. We'll find out. No, no coffee? Okay. Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for this day, and we thank you for your word. And we pray that as we read your word, you would please enlighten our eyes to see. We pray that your word would be like drops of honey, sweet to us, more precious than gold. Lord, we pray that your Holy Spirit would help us to understand believe and live these words in Jesus's name. Amen.
First Samuel chapter 10 beginning at verse 17. I know that wasn't 60. Go ahead, you can start. Then Samael called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah and said to the children of Israel, thus says the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt and delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all kingdoms and from those who the hand of And from those who oppressed you. Oppressed you. But you have today rejected your God, who himself saved you from all your adversaries and your tribulations. And you have said to him, no set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your clans.
All right. So what's Samuel saying there? You were like a king like all other nations. You had your king. Who was their king? Well, it was supposed to be God. God was supposed to be their king. Like they had a king, but he wasn't like the He wasn't like a king as we think of him as much, but he was supposed to be God.
And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen. When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the tribe of Matri was chosen, and Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. Therefore they inquired Jehovah further, has the man come here yet? And the Lord answered, there he is, hidden among the equipment. So they ran and brought him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders, taller. Shoulders upward and Samuel said to all the people Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen that you? that There is no One like him among all the people. So all the people shouted and said long live the king.
All right, so what happens there? Saul is hiding the equipment. Yes tribe by tribe by tribe clan by clan family by family and then you've Benjamin And then finally down to Kish and then Sol. Where is that dude? He's hiding. And the Lord's the one who's like, I'm not playing hide and seek. He's over there in the equipment. They go get him. And what do they say? He's really tall. Yeah. He's really tall. And they say, long live the king.
Then Samuel explained to the people the behavior of royalty, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before Jehovah. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. And Saul also went home to Gibeah. And valiant men went with him, whose hearts God had touched. But some rebels said, How can this man save us? So they despised him and brought him no presents, but he held his peace.
All right, what about there? What's that say? Like, well, we want a king like this. And then some of them are like, we don't want a king like that. We don't definitely don't want this guy. How is he supposed to save any of us? He's a coward hiding in the equipment. How Samuel respond? Or Saul respond? He just munched, apparently. Yeah, he just holds his peace for a while.
They'll see him, they'll say, oh great, yay, long live the king, this is good for you guys. He's like, there's some laws that need to be set, there's ways the king has to act. Yeah, I think he's referring probably back to Deuteronomy chapter 17 with the laws of the kings but also what he had said before about the kings. They would take their stuff and overtax them and make their daughters work for them and make their young men go before him in war. It would be heavy handed and tyrannical at times.
Alright, so what's this whole section about? Um, Saul becomes king? Yeah, Saul actually becomes a king now. Yeah, it's interesting. Why do you think he's hiding? I don't know. Preparing a speech? I don't think Saul really wanted it per se. It's going to be interesting because later on he's going to love it so much that he would kill for it. Just to keep it. Saul is a really insecure person that doesn't really know what he wants, and once he has it, he's afraid of losing it. He's willing to break all sorts of commands to keep it. He becomes power thirsty.
So, yeah, good. Saul becomes king. What would you underline as the best verse to summarize this? If you could underline one verse. Um... Me. 19. You would do 19? That's good. Yeah, but you have today rejected the God who himself saved you from all your adversaries and your tribulations and you have said to him no said a king over us now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your clans. I like that. Good. Oh, yeah. I would underline verse 23 and 24. about Him being taller than all, a head and shoulders above everyone? And do you see Him who Jehovah has chosen, that there is no one like Him among all the people?" I actually didn't have anything underlined in that section, interestingly enough.
So, see calling. What are we called to do? Or how does this show us Jesus Christ? I mean, you're almost getting taller than me. You're going to be probably head and shoulders higher than I am. I think it, I think that it's supposed to point us to, we don't have a physical king today, but it, there's not a king on off whom we solve right now. But I think that- I thought Trump was king. Trump's not king. There'd be a few issues if Trump was king, but the, I think this points us to Saul was afraid of becoming king. He didn't specifically know if he wanted to become king. And I think this points us to Jesus, how Jesus is the prophet king. He asked that. God could take the cup from him, but he was like, if it's your will, I'll do it. So, I think it shows us that Christ is the ultimate King. He was never afraid of doing it. Yeah, and I think where the crown is kind of hoisted onto Saul, Jesus earns it. Yeah. Good.
All right. You ready to pray? Yep. You going to pray? No, I thought you would. Oh, okay. God, we thank you that you gave us our victorious king, the one who did earn his crown, who took it with humility, but also with purpose. And we thank you that our king lives forever. We pray that we would follow after you. We pray that you would please teach us to rejoice in you and to be busy about your kingdom and your work. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
