1 Samuel 9:27-10:16

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're going to continue on about the story between Samuel and Saul and how does he actually become king. Well, let's find out. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word.
Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for blessing us with time to read your Word. We thank you for the joy of having your word in a language we can understand. We pray that you would please help us to read it and understand it and that your Holy Spirit would apply it to our lives in Jesus' name. Amen.
Here we go. First Samuel chapter, we'll start in chapter 9 beginning in verse 27, but we'll read through the first half of chapter 10.
As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Tell the servant to go on ahead of us. And he went on. But you stand here a while, that I may announce to you the word of God. Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, Is it not because Jehovah has anointed you commander over his inheritance?
When you have departed from me today, you will find two men by Rachel's tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelza. And they will say to you, the donkeys which you went to look for have been found. And now your father has ceased caring about the donkeys and is worrying about you, saying, what shall I do about my son?
Then you shall go on forward from there and come to the terebinth tree of Tabor. There three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a wine of skin. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive from their hands.
After that shall come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is. And it will happen when you have come there to the city that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with a stringed instrument, a tambourine, a flute, a harp before them, and they will be prophesying. Then the Spirit of Yehovah will come upon you. and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man
let it be when these signs come to you that you do as the occasion demands for god is with you you shall go down before me to gilgal and surely i will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings seven days you shall wait till i come to you and show you what you should do
So it was when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that Saul gave him another heart. And all those signs came to pass that day. When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him. Then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
And it happened when all who knew him formally saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets, that the people said to one another, What is this that has come upon the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets? Then a man from there answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb. Is Saul also among the prophets? we and when he had finished prophesying he went to the high place then Saul's uncle said to him and his servant where did you go so he said to look for the donkeys when we saw that they were nowhere to be found we went to Samuel and Saul's uncle said tell me please what Samuel said to you Saul said to his uncle he plainly told or he told us plainly that the donkeys had been found but about the matter of the kingdom he did not tell him whether what Samuel had said. I guess we're just gonna have to wait till next time to find out how he actually becomes king because here he doesn't say anything right what's this about Samuel tells him you're gonna meet these people. They're going to give you bread and wine. You're going to meet the prophets and you're going to have the Spirit of God poured upon you and you'll start prophesying and then you're going to do all these different things. There's going to be these amazingly very specific prophecies that are going to happen and they're going to come true. And every single one of them comes past even finding his father's donkeys.
But his dad is concerned and he's no longer worrying about donkeys. Now he's worried about Saul. And so, what's this section about? Well, even though Saul has the Spirit upon him, he seems to be like a different man, yet there's still some odd things about Saul. He doesn't really seem to want to take the reins and just kind of this interesting dude. We're going to really wrestle with Saul over the next couple of months.
But what is this section about? Samuel sending Saul away. Now this idea though that he was anointed and then Samuel took the flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, is it not because Jehovah has anointed you commander over his inheritance? That word for pouring is the word for Messiah. This is this anointing. He's being commissioned into this office. He is the commander-in-chief of the armies of Israel. This is the office that he has.
What's this section about? That's what it's about. Saul's anointing. But no one knows it yet, just Samuel and Saul. What's the best verse to summarize this? Well, I would underline my Bible in verse 1. So, what do we call the doom in response to this? One is to believe. When God prophesies things, we can trust, we can believe, we can hope. And He's promised us many things that are to come in the future, and I think we can hold those promises short. Now, is that an evidential thing I can give you? No, it's a statement of faith. And I think that's happened in the past, and I think these words are true, so I believe that they will come true. I don't believe that any of God's words fail, and so I think we can trust God's prophecies. He's got a pretty good track record.
One of the things that I love about this is this idea that the oil being poured upon his head, right? I think I like Psalm 133 when Moses is pouring the oil upon Aaron's head, and it's flowing down upon his beard, and it's going on his garments, and it's like this sweet unity in the church, or in the assembly, and it's this beautiful picture of being set apart for this special office. The book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus was anointed. Jesus was set apart to be our prophet, our priest, and our king. And so it's Jesus who this is ultimately pointing towards. We always read the Old Testament in light of the New Testament. All these things were meant to point towards somebody who is going to be better than Saul. Somebody who is going to be greater. And Jesus indeed is that one who is a commander. He is the commander of over the Lord's inheritance.
So we can obey Him. We can follow Him. We can trust Jesus. Our King of Kings. Our Lord of Lords. Our Great Shepherd. For He's good to us. He leads us. He intercedes for us. Our High Priest. He is the final prophet. He is the one we listen to. And we obey. And we love.
Let's pray. Father, we thank You so much for giving us true history and it's fascinating, it's interesting, but Lord we thank you that all of it ultimately is pointing to Jesus Christ, to the kingdom that we are inheriting that's far better and greater than any kingdom on this earth. Lord we pray that we would follow after you and that we would love you and we pray that you would please give us strength Lord, we pray that you would give us strength to believe in all your words and to follow you all the days of our lives. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
