Hebrews 1:1-4

Hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning, we are going to just be talking for a moment and praying together because we're going to start the book of Hebrews. But I've realized I've been doing this for years now and haven't given an introduction for a very long time. What's the purpose of this? What are we doing? This is where every morning you and I, we get together, we have a little bit of coffee and we get into God's word.
This is not a devotional time. Coffee and devotions isn't a devotion like you might normally pick up in a different devotional book that you have from various authors throughout the ages, right? There are famous devotional books, some of them good, some of them of questionable value, right? But I mean, my wife and I have been highly blessed by devotionals by people like Paul Tripp or Charles Spurgeon. This is not a devotional like that, where we're just picking up one verse and running with a theme or an idea.
No, what we're doing here is we are trying to systematically go through books of the Bible and read through God's Word little bit by little bit. And we ask ourselves, what's this about? We're trying to figure out what did this mean to the people at that time? And so we're trying to wrestle with that together. And then to try to help us remember that as we look at our own Bibles, we try to underline one verse in our Bible for a verse to summarize.
It's not the best verse that we like, but the best verse to summarize that section. And the last what we do is we go to see calling. And so calling is both an application, but also covenant and getting us to Christ. So the calling is application to us. Yes, we want to figure out how this is applied to us.
But Jesus also told us that all the scriptures pointed to Him. So we want to try to figure out how does this show us the New Covenant or the hope of the New Covenant? How does it show us the covenant of grace, this plan of God's redemption from the Old Testament through the New Testament? And also, does this have very clear reference or allusion to Jesus Christ, whether that's by typology or through covenant or some allusion. Or does the New Testament pick this up and quote a passage of the Old Testament that we're looking at? So that's what we're doing as we go through the scriptures together for coffee and devotions. Of course, we do have coffee. Some of my children like it, some of them don't.
I always love it. But I hope that this is a time that you are both challenged and blessed. You might not always like what I come up with, and that's okay. I encourage you to write down in the comments what you think about the passage, or if you would underline something else, or if there's a different calling in your life, that's more than welcomed.
One of the things we're trying to do, though, is to be honest about getting into God's Word. I can't always promise to get as deep into it as you might like. And that's okay. I might not be as shallow as you want. Maybe you wanted it faster, but I think we need to delve into something. And that's okay. I don't set a time limit to these. I just try to keep it within a bite size margin.
So If you're ready for that type of adventure and journey, I hope that you will continue to join us because tomorrow we start out on the book of Hebrews. This is my favorite book in the entire Bible. If I could only have one book of the Bible with me for the rest of my life, it would be this book, the book of Hebrews. It is a book that shows us just how intricately connected the Old Testament and New Testament are, how everything in the Old Testament, especially in the first five books of Moses, was pointing us to faith in Christ. So I hope that you'll join me for that adventure through the book of Hebrews starting tomorrow. So for now, let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and then I'll let you go for the day. Let's pray.
Father, you have given us an amazing blessing. Lord, to be able to actually read your word. Father, we pray that as we read your word, indeed, it would be a light to our eyes, a lamp to our paths. Lord, we pray that you would please give us joy in reading your word. Let us be like newborn babes crying out for the pure and undefiled word that you have given us. Lord, we pray that as we read your word, that you would indeed let it do a heart work in us. Lord, your word doesn't return void.
And so we pray that your spirit would use your word to teach us, to correct us, to rebuke us, and even to train us in righteousness, that we might be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Lord, we pray that you would be working in our hearts to give us faith and give us strength and give us joy. May you be glorified, Lord, as we continue on through the rest of the year in coffee and devotions in Jesus's name. Amen. May the Lord bless you as you enjoy time in his word and in prayer and as you enjoy getting closer and closer to your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I'll see you next time. Bye.
