Hebrews 1:5-14

hey hey good morning good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we are at Hebrews chapter 1: 5 through 14 it's an amazing section on who Jesus is let's have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into God's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day thank you for your word thank you for the blessing it is to get to read your word Lord there are amazing things here for us to understand we pray that we would not lose sight of the glory that you have shown Us in these passages but we pray that you would please help us direct us guide us and Lord let your spirit do his work to sanctify us to take this word and make it applicable to our lives changing the way we think the way we worship and the way we live in Jesus's name amen all right so we are at Hebrews chapter 1: 5-4 Hebrews 1 5-14 here we go for to which of the Angels did he ever say you are my son today I have begotten you and again I will be to him a father and he shall be to me a son but when he again brings the firstborn into the world he says let all the angels of God worship him and he and of the Angels he says he who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire but to the son he says your throne oh God is forever and ever a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom you have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness therefore God your God has appointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companions and you Lord in the beginning laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands they will perish but you remain they will be all grown old like a garment like a cloak you will fold them up and they will be changed but you are the same and your years will not fail but to which of the angels has he ever said sit at my right hand till I make your enemies my foot stol are they not all ministering Spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation woo we got a lot to work through let's try to get it done I'm going to try not to put you to sleep or go too deep because man this is an amazing amazing passage a what's this about B what's the best verse to summarize see what are we called to do hey this is amazing this is about Jesus's preeminent Glory as Lord Jesus is far surpassing far greater s far better than any of the angels and the the person who's writing the book of Hebrews I'm convinced it's most like the Apostle Paul but I think as he's writing this he is going to go to Old Testament passage Old Testament passage Old Testament passage Old Testament passage Old Testament passage Old Testament passage Old Testament passage seven different Old Testament passages and ascribes it to Jesus and it's amazing first Old Testament passage Psalm 2:7 you are my son today I have begotten you right has he has made him his son but it's it's not just this this is this hard thing where people get messed up what is Jesus created is he not created no he's not created this idea of he's of this y right this this this yeled is is he's being given the as one old lexicon calls it it is figurative language formally installing a king with all the Theocratic rights right Jesus is being given a crown a King here it's not saying that Jesus is born in the way that he was born of Mary but he's saying here again this is why he's greater than the Angels none of the angels that he ever said you're my son you get the Theocratic rights you get the rights of the king no other no but no angel has he ever said that to him and again uh what we find here in verse five and again I will be to him a father and he will be to me a son this is referring back to 2 Samuel 7:14 when God promises David he's going to have a son who will sit on his throne forever God never made that type of Covenant with any Angel but he did make it with David in the davidic Covenant and so the again this is God the Father saying here I will be to him a father the him Jesus and he shall be to me a son right there that's the relation ship that's going to happen between Jesus and the father there's a son and the father Dynamic we see that all throughout the gospels from Jesus's own lips goes again in verse 16 to the Old Testament let all the angels of God worship him right this is specifically let all the Elohim or let all the angos Santo so let all the angels bow down before this King right this is this what what people call almost like this Royal obss right this this bowing down to the king the Angels bow to Jesus that's what that's getting at let all the angels of God worship him let them bow down to Jesus verse 7 and of the angels He says who makes angels his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire now that's an interesting one right because this is pulling from Psalm 104 Psalm 104:4 but Psalm 104 is all about the Lord who created the heavens and the Earth who sits above the mountains who brings the water and controls the Seas and even creates the angels and here it's ascribing that to Jesus they are his ministers they are the ones who though they're the seraphim though they're the ones who are burning like fire even that angel at the Garden entrance guarding with a sword of fire serves who Jesus and then verse eight but to the son so this is the Father Here speaking to the son he says ready for it your throne oh God is forever and ever a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom you have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness therefore God your God has appointed you with the oil of gladness more than your companion straight out of Psalm 45: 6-7 it is God who has given the scepter to the son to rule he's never done that with an angel and notice what he says again this is God the Father speaking to the son verse eight your throne oh God is forever and ever this is the father speaking to the son and he calls him God and says he has an eternal Throne he's given him that scepter of the Kingdom a scepter of righteousness why because Jesus loved righteousness and hated lawlessness this is the exalted Jesus is is talking about but it's like the the author of Hebrews can't stop going right he goes all the way to Psalm 102 and he says You Lord in the beginning laid the foundations of the of the Earth he's again this is the writer of Hebrews pulling from the septu from the Greek old translation of the Old Testament and he's calling Jesus here Lord and he says he's the one who's laid the foundations of the Earth the heavens are the work of your hands the but the heavens and the Earth they're going to perish but Jesus will remain and they will grow old like a garment they're going to be folded up they're going to be changed but you notice here this idea of eternality and immutability Jesus is eternal and unchanging but you are the same and your years will not fail Jesus is the same and again that's not attributed ever to any Angel anywhere Jesus is much better than even the angels verse 13 but to which of the angels has he ever said Psalm 110 right here sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your foot stol God never made that type of promise to any Angel but he did make it to Jesus he's better than the angels are they speaking of the angels are they not all ministering Spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation Angels were sent to serve us who will inherit salvation I know that's a hard thing to think but I do think that the Lord protects his people cares for his people guards his own and be because of this verse is why I'm saying that they're sent as ministering servants or ministering Spirits sent forth for service Ser for forth to minister diakon Neon right for this for the Deacon us who inherit salvation that is how great Jesus is that's how great Jesus is I do want to just say the early church really wrestled with how do you put this together how does God the father called God the son God H how how does that work well he's in the ncing Creed accepted at the Council of Constantinople in 381 they had a wonderful phraseology for this i' I'd encourage you to go study and memorize the Ning Creed I think it's one of the best ways to understand this but they specifically said he is begotten not made of the same substance to the father through whom all things were begotten he's begotten not made he's greater than all the Angels he's got a Crown of Glory that will never fade he's greater than so many of us give him credit for this is the god the God man the theanthropos Jesus Christ that the author of Hebrews wants us to know this is the one the king of kings that we bow down to we pay Royal homage to with the angels in heaven we sing his glories because he sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high I think that's what we're called to I want you to have I think the scriptures I think God himself wants you to have a much grander view of who the son is and what we so often get pedal to us in media and what people want to make Jesus out to be you know just this tolerant guy who's accepting anything and everything and you know beats people along the way this is The God Who humbled himself took on the form of the likeness of a man and he was obedient even to death even death on a cross and because of that God has so also highly exalted him above every name and every Power every throne and every Kingdom he is indeed the Lord of Lord and the king of kings and I hope that you will love him though you have not seen him yet you love him I pray that as he is your king is your savior who has purged you of your sins that you will serve him in fear in gladness and in love God this has been more of a sermon than a devotion but it's such a cool passage it's hard for us to wrap our brains and our hearts around but you indeed have sent us an amazing Lord and Savior father we long to see his light and to see him face to face encourage us in our walk before you now in Jesus's name amen may God bless you
