Hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions.
This morning we are at 2 Samuel chapter 5, just the first few five verses or so.
We're going to talk about David and how he actually becomes king of all of Israel.
How's that happen? Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get to God's Word.
Let's pray.
Father, we thank you for this day.
We thank you for the joy that you have given us to be in Jesus.
We thank you for your Holy Spirit.
We thank you for your Word.
And we pray that as we read your Word, you would please help us.
Help us, Lord, to know who you are.
And help us to walk in your ways.
In Jesus' name, amen.
All right, here we go.
1 Samuel chapter 5, the first five verses.
Then all the tribe of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying,
Indeed, we are your bone and your flesh.
Also, in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in.
And Jehovah said to you, You shall shepherd my people Israel to be ruler over Israel.
Therefore, all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron.
And King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before Jehovah.
And they anointed David king over Israel.
David was 30 years old when he began to reign.
And he reigned 40 years.
In Hebron, he reigned over Judah, seven years and six months.
And in Jerusalem, he reigned 33 years over all Israel and Judah.
But we need to ask ourselves our three questions.
A, what is this about?
B, what's the best verse to summarize this?
And C, what are we called to do?
Where does it show us Jesus Christ or the covenant of grace?
So, A, what is this about?
Well, it's been working up for years.
For us, it's only been a few chapters of reading.
But it's been working up for years.
David is going to become king.
And here, he's finally anointed, right?
This is his coronation service.
This is him being anointed by the people for being king.
And so, we see that all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron.
They all come together.
And they make a covenant.
They make a binding agreement, a compact between the new monarch that they know God has chosen, right?
This is what we read in 1 Samuel about David being anointed and chosen by God.
We've seen him come to power.
And this is this climatic moment that David is finally anointed, that they take the oil and they pour it on his head.
Man, I wish I was there.
Have you ever seen the coronation service?
I've watched large chunks of the coronation service, both for Queen Elizabeth II as well as King Charles now.
It's a huge, elaborate ceremony.
If you've never watched it before, it's really interesting.
And I don't know how elaborate it was here at Hebron.
But in the old capital, they come together and make this covenant.
And it gives the time length in verses 4 and 5 of how long David was king, right?
He was, he reigned for a total of 40 years.
When he was just over Judah, it was 70 years.
And then another 33 over all of Israel.
And so for a total of 40 years.
So, what's this about David ascending to the throne, the united throne of both Judah and all of Israel?
What's the best verse to summarize this?
Well, I have verse 3 underlined in my Bible.
All the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. And King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before Jehovah. And they anointed David king over Israel.
So, I think that's this united crown.
This David becomes king.
I think that's the best verse to summarize this.
Well, last, C, calling.
What are we called to do, right?
Well, one, I think this shows us God's covenant faithfulness and we can trust in the Lord, right?
He's the one who is caring for his people this entire time.
And here, he brings David to the throne.
What he had promised years and years and years ago, he fulfills.
He does it.
And so, David becomes the king.
But we also are going to find out just in a few chapters.
We'll get there in a little bit in 2 Samuel chapter 7.
But we'll get there.
We've got to take an excursus through one of the books of Chronicles.
But God's going to make a promise to David.
He's going to have a son who will sit upon his throne who's going to be way better than David.
And he's going to be the king forever.
Spoiler alert, that's King Jesus.
There's a reason why the book of Matthew starts with the genealogy of Jesus.
There's a reason why you see all these messianic fulfillments,
even with Pilate putting the title King of the Jews above Jesus' head in Greek, Latin, and Aramaic.
Jesus really was the king, the king of kings.
He has ascended up into heaven and he is the king almighty.
So, we follow after King Jesus.
He's a son of David.
And God's the one who has been good to his promises.
God is caring for his people.
He's keeping his covenant.
And here we find that with David.
Let's go ahead and pray.
Father, we thank you that you have shown us this true history.
Lord, that there was a son of Jesse.
His name was David.
And that David really did become king.
And Lord, we thank you that generations and generations later, you gave us King Jesus.
In his name we pray.
Amen.
May God bless you.
May you walk in the joy and peace of Jesus Christ.
and I'll see you next time, bye.
