1 Chronicles 1:1-28

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at 1 Chronicles, 1 Chronicles chapter 1 verses 1 through 27. We're going to kind of start doing the chronological plans. So we did Ruth, we did 1 Samuel, now we are at 1 Chronicles and you'll kind of see how things start getting interleaved together. So let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll find out how does all David tie to Adam and the kings and stuff.
Anyways, let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing it is that we get to read your Word. We thank you that it's a gift to us. It's more sweet than honey, more precious than gold, and by it we, your servants, are warned. And in keeping your word, there's great reward. So Lord, we pray that you would please help us as we read that your spirit would please do these things that we might appreciate, know, love, and grow. Not just in the love for your word, but in our love for you. In Jesus' name. Amen. Here we go.
1 Chronicles chapter 1, the first 27 verses. Adam, Seth, Enosh, Canaan, Machalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Jepheth. The sons of Jepheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshach, and Tiras. The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Dipath, and Togma. The sons of Javen were Elisha, Tarshashah, Ketim, and Rodanim. The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Sheba, Havilah, Sabta, Rama, and The sons of Ramah were Sheba and Dedan.
Kesh begot Nimrod, he began to be a mighty one on the earth. Mizraim begot Ledim, Anamim, Lahabim, Neftahim, pathrushim, kaluchim, from whom came the philistines, and the kafatorim, Cainan begot Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth, the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Gergesite, the Hivite, the Archite, and the Shinite, the Avardite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. The sons of Shem were Elam, Asher, Afarxad, Lud, Aram, Uz, Hol, Gether, and Mesech.
Afarxad begot Shelah and Shelah begot Eber. To Eber were born two sons. The name of one son was Peleg, for in his day the earth was divided. And his brother's name was Jokdan. Jokdan begot Almon, Alomadad, Shalif, Hazarmaveth, Jared, Hadoram, Uzal, Dikla, Ebal, Abmiel, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Jocton. Shem of Pharsad, Shelah, Eber-Pelegru, Shereg-neh-hor-terah, and Abram, who is Abraham. The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael.
Well, we're going to go ahead and stop there. That's a lot of names, man. A lot of names. We've got to ask ourselves, A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? Man, 1 Chronicles just starts off with a real nail-biter.
Genealogy. We get from Adam to Abraham. That's the point. That's what this is. Genealogy, Abraham, his kids, their kids, all the way down to Abraham. we're going. Adam to Abraham, right? So, Adam to Noah, Noah to the sons of Noah, Jephthaham and Shem, you got three different lineages going there, and from Shem to Abraham, and the ends, Abram who is Abraham, and you got two sons, Ishmael and Isaac. And so, that's what this is about. It's a genealogy But theologically, what is this about? This is why we talk about the covenant of grace. That God had this plan all the way from Abraham.
We saw glimpses and glimmers of it as we went through the Torah and we talked about many of these names about Enoch who walked with God and the Lord took him because he was no more. We talked about Methuselah and his old age and how he lines up with Noah. We talked about Noah and his great life, but then also his sin. We find out about how all these different nations come about after the death, or after the flood, and even who begets, like Canaan begetting people, and where the Philistines come from, and how these different people get all these different places, right?
And you can go read more about this, but the point being here is, Abram. God's been faithful. through all of this. He's brought us to this covenant person, to Abram, who is called Abraham. He's got two kids, and he's going to keep on continuing. That's where we'll get into more later. What's the best verse to summarize this? Well, in my Bible, I have verse 27 underlined, and Abram, who is Abraham, and then verse 1, Adam the Japheth. That whole line is what I got. part me. Man, I need to get more sleep. So we need to just ask ourselves, seek calling. What are we called to do? Well, there's another book of the Bible that starts off with a genealogy, the book of Matthew who goes all the way from Abram to David, David to Jesus, right? That's the nail-biter of Matthew chapter one.
I'm not going to read that whole genealogy to you, but genealogies are important. Genealogies tell a story in and of themselves. The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham, it goes from Abraham to David, and then all the way from David through the Babylonian captivity, all the way down to verse 16, and Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, who was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Because all of these promises and hopes of someday there being a Savior, someday there being hope, someday there being salvation, someday this enmity, all the way back in Adam's day, would find its way through a huge generational swath, culminating in Jesus. seeing God's faithfulness work through that covenant of grace. And then that covenant expanding even more and including even us. There's a reason genealogies are in the Bible, they matter.
They're real people. God's legacy of grace. The beautiful thing is we're part of that legacy of grace because we have been adopted by his spirit into the family. We're part of the number, full heirs of the covenant. We get to also go, that's my story. That's my spiritual ancestry. Man, God is good. Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for giving us a history, a genealogy that we have been adopted into. That you have been faithful to your covenant from the very beginning. and that you watch out and you care for even us. So Father, we pray that we please love you and follow after you all the days of our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. May God bless you. May you walk in the joy of Jesus. And I'll see you next time. Bye.
