The Servant of All

Bryan Schneider · July 15, 2023

Mark 10:35-45

sharonrpc.org/sermons/the-servant-of-all

Summary

  • James and John seek places of honor, and the other disciples' anger reveals that all twelve share the same ambition for importance.
  • Jesus contrasts worldly rulers who dominate people with kingdom greatness expressed through service and slavery to all.
  • Self-promotion and hunger for power are especially dangerous in church leaders because they build personal kingdoms rather than God's kingdom.
  • Christ-shaped leadership notices people, bears costs for their good, and serves in ordinary, often unseen acts of mercy.
  • Jesus is not merely an example of service: the Son of Man gives his life as the ransom price that redeems his people from sin, death, and the law's curse.
  • Good works do not redeem believers; they flow from gratitude for Christ's prior love and sacrifice.
  • The sermon challenges each listener to perform a concrete act of selfless love every day because Jesus has loved them.

Reflection and discussion

  • Where do I seek recognition, rank, or influence instead of another person's good?
  • How does my use of authority resemble Jesus' service rather than worldly domination?
  • Do I judge church health by numbers and reputation or by people growing in love for Christ?
  • What unnoticed need can I meet this week without expecting praise or repayment?
  • How does Jesus' ransom keep my service from becoming an attempt to redeem myself?
  • When service becomes tiring, am I drawing renewed strength from Christ's love and the Holy Spirit?
  • What one act of selfless love can I intentionally do for someone today?
