Sermon Text

1 Peter 5:8-9

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.

Summary

  • Satan is a real created spiritual enemy, but he is never God's equal; believers should take him seriously without becoming slaves to fear.
  • Christians must be sober—clear-minded about God's truth, the devil's schemes, and their own particular weaknesses and tendencies toward sin.
  • Vigilance requires prayerful attention to patterns of temptation before compromise grows and spiritual danger is already close.
  • The devil accuses, deceives, and seeks to devour, but believers resist him by relying on Christ, God's Word, prayer, and the full armor God supplies.
  • Resistance is a shared calling: Christians stand together, confess struggles, help the fallen, and remember that the worldwide brotherhood endures similar sufferings.
  • Even Satan's attacks remain under God's sovereignty, and God can use suffering for his people's good, his gospel's advance, and his own glory.

Reflection and discussion

  • Do I treat spiritual warfare with sober seriousness, or do I drift toward denial, fascination, or fear?
  • What recurring weakness or pattern of sin makes me especially vulnerable to temptation?
  • Where have small compromises begun to dull my watchfulness?
  • When accused in conscience, do I rest in Christ's righteousness and confess real sin, or listen to condemning lies?
  • How consistently do I use prayer and Scripture before temptation becomes a crisis?
  • Who in the church knows my struggles well enough to help me resist and stand again after a fall?
  • How does God's sovereignty over suffering keep me from despair when opposition or persecution comes?
