Explore Philippians 1:15-18 in this sermon: Paul rejoices whenever the true Christ is preached, whether the preacher acts from sincere love or from envy,…

Scripture Text

15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: 16 The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; 17 but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. 18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Php 1:15–18.

  • Paul rejoices whenever the true Christ is preached, whether the preacher acts from sincere love or from envy, rivalry, and selfish ambition.
  • The gospel's saving power belongs to God's message and the Holy Spirit, not to a minister's eloquence, personality, denomination, or perfectly pure motives.
  • Rejoicing in true proclamation does not remove discernment: hearers must act like Bereans and test whether the Christ and gospel being preached agree with Scripture.
  • Ministers must guard against jealousy and self-seeking, while all believers may take joy that God advances his kingdom through weak and sinful messengers.
