Scripture

Psalm 119:9-11

9 How can a young man cleanse his way?

By taking heed according to Your word.

10 With my whole heart I have sought You;

Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!

11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,

That I might not sin against You.

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Ps 119:9–11.

Summary

  • Psalm 119 teaches that a clean path comes through taking heed to God's Word and seeking the Lord with the whole heart.
  • Meditation slows down over Scripture, considers its meaning, and applies it rather than treating reading as a box to check.
  • Memorization hides the Word in the heart so truth is available when temptation, suffering, witness, or counsel requires it.
  • Meditating and memorizing are simple but diligent ways of seeking God himself, walking his path, and resisting sin.

Reflection and discussion

  • Am I reading quickly without pausing to understand and apply God's Word?
  • Which passage would be most helpful to memorize against a recurring temptation?
  • Does my use of Scripture seek God with the whole heart or merely complete a religious task?
  • How could a memorized text prepare me to encourage or answer another person?
