Hope in the Face of Judgment

Romans 5:1-11

sharonrpc.org/sermons/hope-in-the-face-of-judgment

Summary

  • Romans 5 grounds Christian hope in an objective reality: those justified through faith have peace with God through Jesus Christ.
  • God takes the first step in salvation; Christ's blood purchases peace and believers receive access by faith into the grace in which they stand.
  • Biblical hope is not wishful thinking but confident expectation of sharing God's glory and beholding him.
  • Christians may glory even in tribulation because God uses suffering to produce perseverance, proven character, and deeper hope.
  • This teaching neither denies grief nor promises worldly prosperity; it calls believers to run toward their Father in suffering rather than away from him.
  • Hope does not disappoint because the Holy Spirit pours God's love into believers' hearts and strengthens them through trials.
  • The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit act together: the Father loves, the Son dies and rises for sinners, and the Spirit comforts and matures them.

Reflection and discussion

  • Am I resting in peace with God through Christ, or still trying to establish my standing through my own performance?
  • When I say I hope, do I mean a vague wish or a confident expectation grounded in God's promise?
  • How has God used a past tribulation to produce endurance, tested character, or stronger hope in me?
  • Do I allow grief to drive me toward my Father, or do I interpret suffering as evidence that he has abandoned me?
  • How does Christ's death for sinners demonstrate God's love when present circumstances feel uncertain?
  • Where do I need the Holy Spirit's comfort and strength to persevere today?
  • How can I encourage another sufferer without minimizing grief or offering a prosperity-gospel promise?
