Scripture Text

17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. 18 For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. 20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.

4 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Php 3:17–4:1.

  • Walking as a citizen of heaven begins by following faithful examples while remembering that every human model is imperfect and Jesus Christ is the original pattern.
  • Paul, Timothy, Epaphroditus, Titus, and qualified church leaders model persevering faith so that discipleship is embodied rather than merely abstract.
  • Believers need unhurried self-examination to ask which examples, habits, and desires are actually shaping their walk.
  • Paul weeps over people whose pattern makes them enemies of the cross, ruled by appetite, proud of shame, and fixed on earthly things; the warning is urgent rather than gleeful.
  • Heavenly citizenship does not forbid grateful enjoyment of creation, but it prevents created goods, consumer desire, political identity, and earthly status from becoming ultimate.
  • Christians eagerly await Jesus Christ, who will transform their lowly bodies to be like his glorious body by his sovereign power.
  • The promise of the returning Savior, bodily resurrection, and a lasting kingdom enables believers to stand firm without placing final allegiance in any earthly ruler or party.
