Scripture

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), 2 Ti 3:16–17.

Summary

  • Paul directs Timothy to Scripture amid perilous times, deception, persecution, and counterfeit godliness because God's Word equips the church for real life rather than academic debate alone.
  • All Scripture is God-breathed: the Holy Spirit carried real human authors so that their distinct writing remained genuinely theirs while communicating what God intended.
  • The Bible is profitable for teaching truth, reproving error and sin, correcting what is wrong, and training God's children in righteousness.
  • The Spirit uses Scripture to produce gradual growth toward Christlike love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  • Bible reading neither earns acceptance nor guarantees easy circumstances; without faith, the Spirit, repentance, and obedience, knowledge alone can become empty godliness.
  • Believers should pursue realistic, regular engagement with Scripture (reading or listening alone, with family, and with others) so they know God and are equipped for every good work.

Reflection and discussion

  • Do I receive the Old and New Testament Scriptures as God's Word and final rule for faith and life?
  • Where am I allowing feelings, culture, or personal preference to overrule something God has said?
  • Am I humble enough to receive Scripture's reproof when it exposes my sin or corrects a cherished opinion?
  • What gradual fruit of the Spirit should the Word increasingly train into my conduct?
  • Have I turned Bible reading into a legalistic measure of acceptance or a method I expect to guarantee an easy life?
  • Is biblical knowledge producing obedience and love, or only information and a form of godliness?
  • What realistic pattern of reading, listening, family worship, or shared accountability will help me engage Scripture regularly?
