Scripture
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, but especially those who are of Caesar’s household.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Php 4:21–22.
Summary
- Paul's instruction to greet every saint calls Christians to more than a polite hello: they are to welcome, love, and embrace one another.
- Biblical greetings often embody reconciliation, joy, compassion, and restored relationship, as seen with Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his family, and the father of the prodigal son.
- God the Father has welcomed repentant sinners, and Jesus embraced and blessed children; divine welcome supplies the pattern for Christian welcome.
- Every believer is a saint set apart in Christ, so churches must resist favoritism and intentionally include newcomers, children, teenagers, singles, widows, shut-ins, and people carrying trials.
- Christian fellowship extends beyond one congregation to other congregations and the whole church across denominational, cultural, and national boundaries.
- Biblical convictions should be held without surrender, yet disagreements with genuine Christians do not erase shared belonging under the one head, Jesus Christ.
Reflection and discussion
- What does my way of greeting people communicate about whether I value and welcome them?
- How has the Father welcomed me through Christ, and how should that reshape my treatment of others?
- Whom do I naturally greet warmly, and whom am I tempted to overlook?
- How can I help children and teenagers know that they belong to the church rather than merely attending their parents' church?
- Which newcomer, single person, widow, shut-in, or struggling believer needs concrete welcome from me?
- Do family history, friendship circles, or church culture make it difficult for outsiders to enter our fellowship?
- How can I hold biblical convictions firmly while rejoicing in Christ's work among Christians with whom I disagree?
- What can I do to strengthen fellowship beyond my own congregation?
