Sermon Text
1 Peter 5:5-7
5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Summary
- Peter particularly calls younger people to submit to their elders, learning Christlike humility under lawful, God-given authority rather than following the pride of rebellion.
- Submission is not blind obedience or permission for leaders to become tyrants; no human authority may command what God forbids or forbid what God commands.
- The command broadens to the whole church: every believer must put on humility and seek another person's good above personal preferences.
- Roles and real authority remain, but leaders, spouses, parents, children, and church members are all called away from pride, control, and harshness toward humble love.
- Humbling ourselves under God's mighty hand includes casting our anxieties upon him, trusting that his sovereign care is wiser and stronger than our attempts to control life.
- Jesus is both the pattern and power of humility: he took the form of a servant, obeyed to the death of the cross, and was exalted by the Father.
Reflection and discussion
- Which lawful authority do I most resist, and what does that resistance reveal about my heart?
- Am I offering merely outward compliance while inwardly nurturing contempt or rebellion?
- How can I distinguish godly submission from obeying a command that would require sin?
- Where has authority been entrusted to me, and am I exercising it with gentleness or demanding control?
- Which personal preference could I lay down for the good and peace of another believer?
- What anxiety am I holding because I believe I must control the outcome?
- How does Christ's willing humiliation and obedience reshape the way I approach authority and service?
Key terms
- Submission
- Willingly honoring and following lawful authority as an act of faith in God, without obeying commands that contradict him.
- Humility
- An active, Christlike posture that lowers self-interest, listens to others, and seeks their good rather than demanding control.
- Authority
- A real but limited responsibility given by God for service and order, never a license for tyranny or abuse.
- Pride
- Self-exaltation that resists correction and can hide in rebellion, bitterness, anxiety, defensiveness, and control.
- Providence
- God's wise and powerful rule over all circumstances, including the hardships in which believers are called to trust his care.
- Anxiety
- A care that becomes a burden of control when we keep it to ourselves instead of entrusting it prayerfully to God.
