As we continue to work our way through the Gospel of Mark. We found ourselves in

the previous section looking at all sorts of different responses the Jesus from people with faith is nothing more than to be healed and the sin of Jesus's feet, and also even the hearts of the scribes who would want nothing more than to destroy

his very life. Now we come to

a section in the book of Mark where we have a series of different teachings

from our board. Let's go now, reading God's word marble, chapter four, beginning of verse one.

And again, he began to teach by the sea and a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that he got into a boat and sat on the sea, and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. Then he taught them many things by parables, and stuck to them

in his teaching. Listen, the whole the sower went out to sow. And it happened

as he said that some seed fell by the wayside and the birds of the air came and devoured it. Somewhere else, stony ground rent did not have much hurt. And immediately it sprang up because it had no depth occur. But when the sun was up, it was scorched, because it had no roof, it withered away. And so the sea fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked. And

it yielded no crop. But Other seed fell on good ground. And you'll get a crop that sprang up, increasing, increase in produce

some 30, fold some 60 and some 100.

And he said, you know, He who has ears to hear, let him hear. But when he was alone, those around him with the 12 Ask him about the parable. And he said to them, Do you haven't been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God? But for those who are outside, all things come in parables, so that seeing they may see and not perceive and hearing they may hear and not understand less, they should turn in their sins be forgiven, though. He said to them Do not understand this parable. How do you understand all the parables? The sower sows, the sower sows the Word. And these are the ones by the wayside, where the word is sown. When they hear,

Satan comes immediately, and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.

These likewise are the ones so mostly brown, when they hear the word immediately they receive it. And they have no root in themselves. And so endure only for a time afterward. When tribulation or persecution arises before the word city, immediately they. Now these are the ones so among the thorns, they are the ones who are here, the group, the cares of this world,

that the sinfulness of riches and the desire for other things

interested in chose the word and it becomes fun. But these are the ones sewn on the ground. Those who hear the word accepted barrier, some 30, some 60 and some portion of the reading of God's word brothers and sisters, wrestlers in the cloud with the Word of God endures.

prayer. Father, we need you this morning. We read your word and we pray that your spirit might have been with us as we read it

plead with you now finding that you're sharing it with us on the breaching plead with you guys do have eyes and ears to hear to mature

I learned a valuable lesson last year.

I'm not a very good gardener.

If you drove by our house last year, you would not have seen a garden you would have seen a weed patch protected by from teared by an electric fence, you would have seen just stuff growing up. It was like waist high chest out, like I had to go in there with the big ones over and just ride over all the big disease a total loss.

And as I thought about that garden, which was not overdone, plants I have spent money for and put in the ground and bore no fruit. Realizing this was a metaphor for my own life. Things can get out of control.

If we just go on autopilot to the to our lives into our hearts, things

can go under the rug. So this morning, if you look at this

parable from the book of Mark, Jesus is specifically teaching us about the Kingdom of God and all sorts of people who come

and hear his teaching. And it all for us this morning is we need to survey our own force. We need to take you to the garden of our own souls. And ask ourselves what type of soil or bead I was to see found a form in Arles pray that we might walk away from here this morning loving Christ force, very good food. So first, we need to look at the seven verses one and two, what's going

on in this section verses one and two, Jesus again began to teach by the Sea and the Sea of Galilee. And a great multitude was gathered to Him. This is nothing new for Mark, people keep pressing in and crowding in on Jesus. But this side is a little bit different. There's so many people that Jesus says, boys, we're gonna go out into the boat. And in the boat, Jesus takes the position of an authority figure of a teacher, and he sits down on the

on the boat, and the calm waters and the Sea

of Galilee. And as he's there most likely with the hills of mckernon. Right behind them. There's a natural amphitheater as he goes, and he teaches them in a series of parables. And Mark chapter four begins a series of parables that Mark wants us to remember, wants us to think about. So the teacher is you're opening up with authority, and he's preaching. And there's been all sorts of people who have come to here and said, before we read that passage, there are people out there in the world, the scribes, they didn't want to actually believe Jesus, they wanted to stop

him and to kill him. There were other people there who just wanted to be healed. There weren't actually there because he loved and she's also just wanted what they could get from him. And there are other people who truly want to learn from him, when to sit with him. Wonderful.

So Jesus is speaking to this mixed multitude, number of people sitting on the doors as he's preaching from his boat in the water. He gives us parable in verses three through nine, the sower.

And as a sower goes out, he's he's broadcasting his seed. Now.

I remember a few years ago, I was with one of the farmers and we were in his planter. And as I was sitting in the body seat of which he tells me, nobody sees the destructor seat, but it instructor seat of the tractor, he was drilling and planting the seed and the GPS could tell him every single place the scene went,

well, that's not how they started seed planted in ancient Israel

See, they would never walk along the way and would have a basket or a sack of they would stick their hand into this basket or sacristy and they would broadcast it out and they didn't have any acres like we have or larger acreage so that these are small family blocks, every single square foot was extremely valuable. So you fill the entire area with seed.

I need you to understand that seed is especially valuable during this time. There's a remember

a story that this is often something that happens in places like Africa, as they have

to they have to meet soon. But you have this problem that food you meet also comes from the seeds and plants. So as you might be going

out and planting sorghum or some other type of a brand new

go out a child would go to the shed know find a stack and that stack is full of see. You have to understand that at the same time all the food has been Egypt is gone. So often our African brothers will come in and tell the missionaries, my son came in and asked if we can eat.

What was left of the great man to tell him? No. No, we needed that to be able to sell for next year. This season. If you are hungry, there's this delayed

gratification. This is why in the Psalms, it says that they're going to be blessed for those who

sow in tears. You're planting not knowing is the harvest is going to come and what you're planting is the food that you're going to be eating the day. So many small plots of

land is as the sower goes out, broadcasting the seed throwing your wonderful all over this small plot

of land that he was going to land on different types of soils. Right, many verses in

the first part, it talks about where it's going to land along

the paths are Behold, A sower

went out to sow and happiness, he said that some seed fell by

the wayside. Verse four, it follows

that better translation there would be a long the past doesn't mean that he's literally walking to the pack, and he's throwing it on the path. But it's as he's throwing it, there's rough ground. Now, this is one of the things I don't like about living in the country. One of you tell me where my yard

ends and where the railroad starts. Because they're trying to the greeter hasn't gone by, I

don't know if I'm supposed to mow the rocks that are next to the grass because there's grass in it, or do I just let it grow, let the sun deal and I don't know what else to do. But the reality is, is that there's nine of us a farmer, and there's a path walking next to their field, they broadcast and in some of the seat has naturally fall along the side. That happens when you throw out seed

or dry ground. God loves the birds, that you think this is Jesus

Calling the least common sense things that farmers and agricultural people

would know. The birds commonly eat it up, and then recite some of the falls along the rocks. Now, this is not uncommon,

I hope you will just bear with me a little bit, I need to give you a little bit of agricultural background, or we need some flavor of this to understand that your religion is going to explain

the second half here. The ground of Israel, especially in the Galilee is

often that the ground is rocky soil, the Indians are farmers would go out with a sailor as they were plowing, they would pick up the rocks and throw them on the edge of the road, they will try to get these rocks out. But inevitably, you're always going to have some rocks

in your field. I'm absolutely amazed by how few rocks you will have here in your in your ground in Ireland. It's just absolutely incredible. But not so in Israel. There's there's rocks everywhere. So I think broadcasting

the soil, what would happen is you have three different really rainy cycles.

In Israel.

You have October to November, and that's the early rains. And that's when you would start sowing your seeds. Right and then what we would call the winter columns December through January, they will get their winter rates. And then from February to March and we get the letters. And so the plants the seeds that will go into the rocky soil, they will have plenty of rain. So they could sprout up they would they would grow quickly. But what would happen in April as the barley harvest started.

Stop. Now the strokes, no more reading. And as these plants grow in the rocks, didn't have any roots. The sun would naturally come up for days upon days, and they would wither away. Even though it seemed like it would be the harvest it wouldn't endure. But then there's always the problem of the fall for seven and some seed fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked it and it yielded no crop. No herbicides back then. You know, farmers only struggling with this question. You pull up the weeds or do lemon stick. I will tell you let them go.

How much work do you need to do this? If I pull up the weeds?

I won't pull the tears we're going to happen in a week. Or so we'd also say there's always

this question and the engineers are like farm What do I

do with these weeds? That can start sowing seed in it. Because worried about the weeds and you don't ever plan to see what happens when you have seeds to ask. But some of them Jesus says diversity About other seeds go on good ground. And you'll get a crop and spring up, increase in produce some 30 fold. So

16 and some

100. I was just at a farmers combine

the other day and it was really neat. You got this screen. And as he was harvesting corn, you could actually see is this a red area of the field or a yellow? Or a green area? Or a really dark green area? how productive is this length?

How good is the land depends on how much the yields. So here Jesus says there see that falls onto the good life and produces a huge crop. No at that time, the estimates are, you might have a 10 for crop and there'll be a prayer crop that uses cases to an extreme and he says a 30 and a 60. hundredfold. That's a massive farmers, you got to figure out how to do Jesus type farming. This is exponential growth that he's talking leaves us authority. He says in verse nine. He says, He who has ears to hear, let him hear might just be comfortable with that phrase. As we read the gospels. To me, it's I'd be saying, if you got it here, listen up and understand. Alright, you got two years on your head, you should understand this. But thank God, the disciples asked questions, not a stupid person like me would ask. Verses 10 through 13, the disciples come to him when he's alone. And they asked him about the pyramid. Here, we actually get inside information, aren't you thankful for the scriptures? Or you're waiting, the rest of the crowd wasn't privileged to this information.

Mark recalls, or as Peter recalls us, and Marx writes

it down. We get inside information from one of his disciples of our Saviors own explanation of as you said that those to

you was given to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God. But to those who are outside, all things come in

errors.

Jesus, this makes sure we understand Jesus isn't my disciples, you're my chosen one. I'm going to speak to you plainly. What's up everyone else they get nervous, they get similes, they get allegories, they get comparisons,

they get. So illustrative of teaching, but not just straight to the point teaching. Why this is a difficult point. First of all, the scene they may see and not perceive. And hearing they may hear and not understand less they should turn given reason cause here so that because the realities of users isn't going to bring light to everyone's eyes. Rowdies here that Jesus has a particular people that he's going to read like, not everyone's going to get into his hand, but only the ones in the farmers. So the scribes leaving

hearts and want nothing to do other than to kill Jesus.

We're going to hear this and be confused.

Those who love the world more than Jesus are going to hear this scratch their heads.

I don't know what that is about. Jesus spoke these words in paragraph. It's something that most evangelicals aren't very comfortable with. Because it didn't come from every single human being on the entire world.

So Jesus instructed in verse 13, a little bit of a steaming question, yes. You don't understand this pyramid? How do we understand all the problems and the results on our legal and our understanding

of your illness? And how often do you read your Bible and then you read the paragraph and you read the paragraph and

you still go I'm gonna I'm understand. Obviously, we all the time. We need the Holy Spirit to explain this to us. We needed it. So Jesus does

that mean, explaining his 14 and 20 doesn't work. I really want stressed and present volume, all the relevant background information that we need to deal seriously with the matter.

Verse 14, Jesus says the sower.

So the word what is the seed? The seed is? The word is the gospel of Christ. Jesus is the sower who said he's going out and he's spreading the gospel. He's going out. He's telling the whole world about the novel, and he's not concerned about those who aren't going to believe. He knows it's going to happen, but he's still going to broadcast, the word is still going to be spread. Far and broad. I need to warn you, we are a Reformed Church and Calvinistic church. But there are people on the edges of the reformed world who are hyper Calvinists who say that we should only give the seed to Christians, as flies that we need to shoo away from the honey. No, we spread the Gospel

to everyone. You share the gospel with everyone

because Jesus broadcasts his seed to everyone.

And it's Friday we're going to be judged for their rejection of Christ. Those who love the world will be judged for their golden dullness to Christ.

So we so the gospel of Jesus, so is the word he preaches the gospel and some of it Yes,

falls on the path it was Christ. No sooner do the words come out of Jesus's mouth Satan himself comes down to snatches of problem

some of you in here today you don't like me right now not like his stories don't even want to be here

this year because the person next year because someone's running here some of you are even right now as we've gone through the first half is terrible the story have turned off your hearts

open so consoles just ignore that it's just getting a grip my teeth for some

time so you might go and talk to people who are in their 80s and 90s who had consumed desires

the things God seen here stand in this pulpit and preach the gospel was there's a casket here and people's faces are cold and dark

is here because they want to remember their loved one will speak about their family, but they have no desire whoa

someday each one of us must stand before the judgment seat of Jesus Christ. What in our hearts were a steward of the path

where is your heart today?

Is your heart so dry and cool to the gospel that is like the cracks brown red logic and drove through the field

into the cracks

This is a speaking to the strives to tell us well

let's say that joy, tears in our eyes because these are our family members or loved ones.

Jesus says to us as is showing this gospel as he's broadcasting the seed. Some of them will land on rocky soil verses 16.

Likewise, are those sown on stony ground when they hear the word meaning that they receive it with gladness.

They have no rooted results in southern Europe only for a time afterward or tribulation or persecution arises

or the word seek immediately a world of easy believe ism. But we live in a

world where all you have to say as a sinner is prayer raise your hand and evangelistic meeting automatically received people hear this great joy that they could be with God in heaven forever. And they hear about no more pain, no more suffering. They hear all these great promises, but they aren't given the full truth of the gospel is the

case. So many people today. Well most about how many

1000s of people made a decision to follow Jesus and their crusades and

other meetings? All the while, where's the discipleship? Where's the route? Remember the early rains they look like you're thriving with the winter rains when you're laboring. But when the drought comes persecution and tribulation somebody calls them a big, faithful back. I'm telling you, I meet with Indian pastors every single week. Trying to encourage them every single week

talking to my brother, I can't say his name on the line right now. I talked to one of my brothers every two weeks he and I alone. And as he's talking, he says, Brian, I understand that Jesus is worth it. But I'm human. And it's hard for me to walk down the street and have a woman spit in

my face and slap

the gospel tears down the chest. Because the good news of Jesus Christ was a wholesome sorts of people who preach at school which

has taught him about eternity is ruining your entire way of life. Need to warn you face verbal persecution here in the West will not do like what our brothers and sisters face in places like North Korea, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan and Yemen, Saudi Arabia, nothing like what they're what they're facing in your Sudan and Ethiopia. There's a cloud on the horizon. Unless the Lord stops the darkness that continues to encroach on our land. I have no doubt that someday many pastors will end up in shape. Purchase will lose more and more rights you'll lose more and more privileges. You know how the Communist Party does things in China? No they did. Six years ago in online stores in Southern Lights, unless it's the official Bible of the Communist Party. It doesn't happen often we think of persecution and we think of it happening like Nero burning Christians, the life is boring. You talk about what's going on and Cuba and North Korea and China looks like you've been kicked out of your house. It looks like you're having to

give up a job as a professor because you will subscribe to someone and this thing

looks like losing your

income your 401 K your retirement it looks like your children are getting accepted into the schools and they shouldn't be what it looks like as my brothers in India told me everyone else gets to support all of them will get their support the Christians don't get

any support it looks like a prejudicial so when people will take

the surveys and say oh Christians are persecuted

persecution always it's as loud as going but the question is for you. This is my question for you with that is how will you respond that when your job is on the line how would you respond when they tell you to teach something that you know you ought not how will you respond when your job is threatened when your livelihood is threatened when

you look your little children in the eyes and you have to determine do I feed my children or do I follow Christ

are you able to be a Christian because it's easy in the West if you're live when the storm comes room have any Christians and find out what you did a great joy over the persecution columns, some phones that will drive something whether what do you do? What do you do? How do you have roots? I don't want to just describe

these things for you. I'm addressing on these last on these last one I'm just want to encourage you. You need to be rooted and firmly fixed in Jesus Christ. How do you do that? How are you built up in your face? How do you become Colossians two Three or four Christians? How do you become those who claim that Jesus Christ,

despite persecution starts with ordinary things just like persecution starts little. This is where fathers are so wise and what they wrote as a ordinary means release. So, what I'm telling you right now, if

you don't have a Bible, I think we got like 17 dozen of them and coverage around your will give you a button for free.

looking promising reading. Children, fathers, you want to leave a legacy for your children, to have deep roots, read the Bible with your children. This is the radical thing in the West, you want to be truly radical in our culture, will pray with your wife, get on your knees and need witnesses, Sam. Go and you washing

your wife in the water of the word may be taking your family time and time again to the family altar, bringing those to the war, reading with them frame observing the sacraments with showing your faith live in action actually care for one another in

the church, their ordinary. Ordinary it's easy for us to go off

or binary, it's easy for us to put prayers aside and we're so busy, it's easy for us to just want to go on these trips and do these things on the Lord's name rather than being with people and hearing the word preacher. But this is the ordinary way in which Jesus Himself gave us for the

church to be rooted in. I need to be reminded of Jesus every day. You need to be reminded of the gospel every day.

We need to encourage one another challenge one another, build one another up in our holy space. This is how we'll be rooted with one another. You are not meant to be alone as a Christian, there's no lone wolf Christianity, fellowship, or model. How do we grow roots by being honest with one another, meditating on God's Word together, singing God's words and one another praying for one another. But see, there's another type of soil proceed to the 19th. Now these are sown a moment oranges,

they were the ones who hear the word and the cares of this world that the sinfulness of the riches and the desires of other things into a game show the word

becomes on.

This was true during Jesus's age, could you imagine what he would say today in

our land of consumers? Go to them. Have you

ever gone on an aeroplane flight before and seeing the magazines that they have? Then you could you could cover over all the luxury and comfort of the world? Have you ever turned on your TV and just thought for a moment? Why are so many commercials?

I'm telling you I did marketing.

And the purposeful desires to a purposeful goal is to soak up a desire within you to buy something to want something and we live in a culture why? Why can you see your phones recording what

you hear and what you say? Because Satan wants

you to be consumed with nothing more than to continue to think after the things of this world the

by the stuff of this world. Stuff. Having money gives us a false sense of security to just have enough money to retire, then I'll be happy. If my house just look

this perfect way like a dozen risings or wherever my neighbor's place then I'll finally have joy

and peace in my heart. Just found that a nice new truck then I'll finally be able to be happy and contented and I'll never want to get into

the false joy my only had knowledge of fill in the blank. Finally have peace. Remember, when we were running our Congress in business? When you're running a business that numbers are always in front of us when you're when you're in charge

of the financial statement? You know how much money has to go in and you keep track and I'm always coming up and I remember my friend challenging me my friend Isaac, who excuse the three with each other Monday, Wednesday, Friday morning and we were there in the studio at 5:30am. He looked up at me, he said It's

bright enough for people can cover to this is a sharp, beautiful by one of my friends and I was worrying too much about the things in this world. I would call my my dresser mirror and I wrote this parable on the mirror deceitfulness of wealth in this life what? I realized that I was trying to find security and peace, happiness, how much revenue was coming in? Rather than how much Jesus had then nothing more than a hobo with a sense of false. How do you combat this? As you take stock of your own heart, as

you look at the garden in your own soul,

how do you combat this in your life? I'm gonna give you a few key elements. First, you come back with humility. You can that believes in your heart with humility, recognizing that we don't deserve any. And how there was that humility, recognizing how blessed we are, will come things. And as you cultivate in your heart, the fruit of faithfulness, as a Spirit works in you and stuff I want I want to I want to thank you, Lord, you're so gracious Father, you move into your hand again. How does that play into thankfulness? You know, the food is generosity. Know how to love this world stuff unless you give it away. If you want to know where to give it away, I know a whole bunch of pastors in India right now really desire to supply this. Anyone if you're just looking for a

way to give stuff away, I have a little girl in the Congo right now is asking for any school supplies and any clothing that they might be able

to apply. We get these from around the world all the time. No publish all to you. narratives around the world actually look, in your own family, in your own community, in the church and in the church globally, you'll find people are some of the most rich people and

firstly, cultivate humility. We encourage the planter thankfulness, the very the fruit of generosity of

partners. Look at others within the Holy Spirit works this in your heart, things of this world you're in the worlds you're going to need some stuff to happen. It's nice to have shoes. We don't live on rent alone. Lastly

these are the ones sold under the rug. Those who hear the word accepted and some 30 pooled some 60 and some person want you to be honest with yourself for a moment we're almost done here. Have a moment sobriety of honest reflection if we did look at your heart this week to enjoy spending time in God's word

if you honestly evaluated your time speed and the concern of your heart how much of it was taken to the Lord and for someone who's just doing xiety Trying to figure it out things for yourself

George I'm gonna do this I'm gonna challenge when you go home

chapter six. Find the fruits of the Spirit. This is a good exercise to ask your spouse ask your children ask your brothers and sisters after whoever's near you.

and then go pick up for Corinthians

If you're not humbled enough by that didn't go pick up First Corinthians and I want you to go look at what love is.

I want you to ask yourselves, my patients. My clients like Christ. My prayers I encourage you have this honest conversation with your kids. Because as you're honest with ourselves, Holy Spirit doesn't support the house. This is only something that the Holy Spirit can do. I don't want you to leave here thinking that this is just a self help sermon that I could. This is the Holy Spirit who will work through this word in your life as you continue to weed the garden of your own soul. Are you bearing fruit in keeping with I love myself no qualifier. I love funerals. Now I like to boast. I love to speak of our friends and family members and get to tell them look at the legacy they left behind. I love to tell the stories of the joy that came to their face when they heard the scriptures.
