We'll make it all the way from the book of Acts to the book of Philemon. I'm so glad to be with you this morning. Let's have some coffee for free and we'll get to the words
let's pray. Father, we thank You for Your word. Lord, what a blessing it is. To sit at your feet and to hear from you.
To hear of the grace that you have shown us in Jesus Christ, or we pray that as we read your word, that your spirit would be working in our hearts. We could understand or make these words alive to us, that we might be alive to you. In Jesus's name, Amen. Romans chapter seven. The first 12 verses Romans chapter seven, the first 12 verses just aren't here we go. Or do you not know brethren for I speak to those who know the law that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives for the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as she lives, but if the husband dies, she was released from the law of her husband. So then if while her husband lives she marries another man she will be called an adulterous but if her husband dies, she is free from the law. So that she is no adulterous, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ. That you may be married to another to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law. having died to what we were held by so that we should serve in the newness of the spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say that is a loss and certainly not on the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law has said, You shall not covet but sin taking the opportunity by the commandment produced in me all manner of evil designed for poor from the law of sin is dead. I was alive once without the law. But when the commandment came I received and I and the commandment which was to bring life I found bringing death for sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and it killed me. Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holding and just in good well, what an amazing passage we need to ask ourselves a What is this about the what's the best verse to summarize the sections and see Lastly, calling what are we called to do in response to these words? What is this about? Well, we have two different sections Paul's explaining the point of the law and the Christian life. The point of law, period. And so he says in the first part, verses one through seven, right or do you not know, brethren, that the law has had dominion over a man as long as he lives? Right as long as you are under the law? You have to live to them all. And he gives us images or this this illustration of marriage. If a if a woman is married, she's bound to her husband. And she goes off and marries another man or sleeps with them. She's an adulterous, but if her husband dies while she's able to remarriage he's not an adulterous and so we need to earn a new head we need a new spouse we need a new person that loves and he says in Christ you died the law. A verse four really gets at the heart. Of the section, verse four, therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead, the law through the body of Christ that you may be married to another. He's this person that we're married to, to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to go. See in Christ, we died to the condemnation of the law. And now by the Spirit, we are united to Christ. This is what the whole picture of marriage is supposed to be. Paul talks about this in Ephesians. But this is a whole picture of marriage that we are united to Christ, that we might now bear good fruit to God through our new husband, Christ. And so he's saying you you're dead to the law. Right that that's not your your master. That's not your husband.
And he says, For where for when we were in the flesh, that sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in the members to bear fruit to death. See? That's what we were. We were slaves to sin. And so the law came in a lot and it seemed as deceptive. And sin as this is like, takes this good thing the law and twisted, goes after its own thing. Right instead of being the good and desirous thing that we would love God. law comes that provokes our sinful nature. And our sinful nature then wants to go and do whatever we want to do. We're going to get in the next section here that says that. But now, we have been missing verses we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by so that we should serve in the newness of the spirit and not in the oldness of the letter. So law came to point out our sins but what about the spirit and so now you can produce those good fruits in crisis. Why Jesus says we must apply in suggestion teachers at this time, both in the diaspora as well as just a Greek philosopher. So if we just teach people enough truth, they'll be able to subdue their passions. Well, it hasn't been worked out really well in the first century. And it hasn't worked out well in the 21st century. Doesn't matter how big and puffed up our minds get, we can learn all we want. But without the Spirit without us being united to Jesus Christ, we're never going to put the death to sinful desires. Of Flesh. So I think at the heart of this is, verse four. I think that the support he extends it with verse five and six and verses one or two through three is his illustration, but I think verse four is the heart of this that's what I have underlined my will. Let's go on to the next section verses seven through 12. This is the hard part for actually Oh word my little paper was there it is. I actually have some notes for myself here that want to kind of stay on track because there's gonna be a whole sermon on this and I'm not gonna I'm gonna keep us tight here, right, but verses seven through 12. What's this Gideon? What was the last purpose the last purpose was the point of sin. But the problem is problem I have problem that you have is that sin is deceptive. And sin manipulates and so what what the law does like a flashlight going into a dark room, pointing out the sinfulness of our hearts. Our hearts then want to go and do that thing that we shouldn't have done or desire that thing we shouldn't have desired. Notice what he says. When he says though, I would not have known what covetousness was unless the law went out consciousness. So there was a time when we were alive and we hadn't transgressed the law. This is what happened with Adam, before the transgression.
Right But Satan manipulated and got us to question that the Lord really say and and beyond that question his motives.
He just doesn't want you to be like, and then got her to question the desires that she saw that the fruit was good for food no
wasn't that it said it wasn't. Got it, given all this work, for them to be good for them to
live. But once it fell, once soon had taken rain. Once the law had come, and they had twisted and perverted the law, a law was just to pronounce judgment. See, the law is holy. The law is righteous. The law is good. But our sinful natures are the problem. And so so he points out specifically with covetousness. Why do we say I wouldn't have known what stealing was unless stealing it's unless the commandment has said Do not steal. I wouldn't have known what adultery was unless the commandment had said do not commit adultery. But it goes to the 10th commandment This is one of those that's an inward will express itself outwardly and how we organize our time resources and but a lot of it is dealing with our affections. You shall not covet covet your neighbor's house nor his wife or his manservant nor his female servant nor his Katelyn or anything that is within your neighbor's gates. So that I wouldn't have known that until the law put a spotlight on my heart and showed me here this is in my sinful nature that went and tried to transgress the law. Isn't that true of our lives as people God says, Here's a line and we're like little kids, little kids like that. You put a marshmallow on a plate and you say, Don't touch that. And though, like, get as close to the kid and the marshmallows there, they're like, you see their hands touching it. You see that? Let's look into that marshmallow. And maybe they might even touch it. They might even just pick it up and lift it just to taste it and put it back hoping nobody saw or they'll pick up the marshmallow they'll just eat it. That's the reality is in our hearts desires things that the law points out to see our sin nature is the problem here. So he's, he's saying right, this is what the law does. The law is not evil. The law is not wrong. The law is good and righteous. Sin is what moves us towards these evil desires. To go against the goodness of God. When that transmission happens, the law is good. The law is righteous. It says no, there was a line and you transgress that line you cross that line with the bar and you fell short of that. Now there has to be punishment. So he's always trying to show you for the wages of sin is death. When we sin we deserved, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. So the gift is not like the transgression gives us gives us everything for this. He gives us Christ who lived a perfect life according to the law and died for you and died for me died the death that we deserve. And now he's still unites us to Jesus. And Mr. Legalist is a cruel taskmaster he seems good. But when it comes to find out it's the law shows no mercy. Maybe you know what that's like? To be climbing up the hill of law. Law, law, law law, and it feels like you just keep getting deep down, deep down, deep down, deep down. Render Christ. Render Christ, love Christ. Go to Jesus Christ. That law is going to show us our sin. But it's meant to show us okay, I can't do this on my own. I need to go to Christ. And then has the Spirit is working in you to hate that sin more and more and more.
Then you will produce good fruit because you actually have the spirit because you're doing it by faith and not out of your own
dome. She has been explore this more we're going to find out more about it tomorrow. But the last parts hearts don't follow your heart. The clean depressed. Father, we thank you for this day.
