Romans 16:17-27

And this year 2022 We're going to go from the book of Acts to the book of fire Lima, and today we wrap up the book of Romans. So congratulations, you have made it through x. Now we're about to make it through Romans. Let's have some coffee. And we'll get let's pray. Father, thank you so much for this day for Your Word. We pray that as we read your word, bless us. We pray that you would watch over us and that you will teach us by your Holy Spirit. Please let us see these words and live by them. And here we go. We have Romans chapter 16. Romans chapter 16. And we are beginning at first 17 are moving to the end of the chapter. Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you learn and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus. Christ but their own belly by smooth words and flattering speech. deceive the hearts of the simple for your obedience has become known to all therefore I am glad on your behalf. But I want you to be wise and what is good and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet for at least the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began, but now made himself made manifest and by the prophetic Scriptures made known to all nations according to the commandment of the everlasting God, for obedience to the faith, to God alone. Wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen. Oh, what a wonderful way to in this book. We need to ask ourselves a What's this about? Be what's the best verses summarize this and see, what are we called to do in response to these words, right. So a, what is this about? Well, the first part is after he's said breed all these people greet this person greet this person greet this person that we did yesterday. He's got one parting thing he says right? There's some people shouldn't actually use it, stay away from them. These are divisive people, people who are giving strange doctrines, different teachers, things other than what the apostles and the prophets have told them. Things that are different from the Scriptures. And indeed, as you started churches, you're gonna find out that there are all sorts of strange teachings that crop up in the church right away. You have Judaizers you have people who are going to thrust the law back on Christians you're going to find there's going to be Gnostics people who are going to try to say that, that God doesn't care about the physical but only the spiritual and that Jesus didn't actually come in the flesh but he was always great. You got to find all sorts of strange Jesus teachings and he say stay away from them. Their devices don't live near their houses right just just just don't they're going after on their own bellies. They're not for the glory of God. So he says stay away from them and he gives them this reminder that Genesis chapter 315 is about to happen. And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly. Right? This is gonna happen Jesus is gonna come again. And even though he has his foot on Satan's head now, eventually, he's going to ultimately destroy satan. And then there's actually some friends but he's a great these people read these people read these people read these people, but now some of Paul's friends were in the room with him. They're in court, and they want to talk to them as well. Right? So Timothy, one of Paul's best friends, he says, hey, I want to say hi. And then you find lucilius and Jason Sosa pattern and they all want to say hi as well. They want to they want to make sure that people know them. Now in verse 22, Turkey is also says I bet he lets us know, he was actually the one who's writing the letter. It was really common at this time that the author would speak and people would write it down. So he's working as his scribe or secretary, something like that. We know this is the common way that even Augustine wrote the majority of his books. He wrote some of them by hand, but a lot of times they were dictated that he would speak and someone would write them down. And then finally, he talks about gays and Erasmus. Now I want to show you this, this isn't the common domain. So I'm able to show you this picture. And so this is actually one of the really fun things. This is a stone in Corinth and the word at the top there is a raster is the same word we have here. And this is very likely the first time outside the New Testament that the earliest Christian is mentioned. And so in verse 23, or Rastus, the Treasurer of the city greets you. And here we have progress. This is me. This is not a common name for that this time. The office here is very similar to the office. This is a Latin inscription but Paul is writing in Greek the words are most likely the same here and so it's very likely that this is the same harassers. How cool is that? I love I just love that when there's there's little things they show like that. I often can't show them here because there's copyright stuff. But how cool is that? And then he ends with this final benediction. That Him who is able to establish according to my gospel is a blessing that we were established in Christ by the end the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery of secret since a world began. This is something small in Genesis chapter 315. But as God has worked out this mystery, this hidden thing of Jesus Christ coming now it's falling. And the preaching is about Jesus Christ and mystery was about Jesus Christ. And now we know the Messiah has come and he's going to return again. But now it's been made manifest and by prophetic Scriptures made known to all the nations are you saying that's good news about Jesus as mystery that was only held by by the Jews is now going to every one, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, you obedience we know this truth. This mystery by the way, mystery doesn't mean that something unknown mystic or something like that just means that it was once unclear. And now it is clear, that's how the Bible uses that word. And then finally, verse 27, to God alone. Wise, be glory through Jesus Christ. Is that not the final goal? I love the Westminster shorter catechism right? What is the chief in demand the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. I hope that you're deeply rooted in Jesus Christ, firmly fixed in him. I hope that you love Him and follow Him. I pray that you might live your whole life knowing that someday Jesus is going to return again. He's going to deal with the ultimate blow to Satan. But for now, we look to God. Can we repeat it was fun. Thank you so much for Jesus Christ.
