Romans 15:7-21

It's for every day you and I we get together, a little bit of coffee. We get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together and this year 2022 We'll go from the book of Acts to the book of Philemon. So glad to be with you today. We are at Romans chapter 15. Why don't we have some coffee? We'll pray and we'll get into the Lord's work. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this blessing it is to sit at your feet. gotta pray that you would teach us today. Please let our eyes be filled with Jesus Christ in our hearts. filled with hope. In Jesus's name. Very good. Romans chapter 15. beginning at verse seven, Romans chapter 15, beginning at verse seven. We'll go on through verse 21. Therefore receive one another just as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises he made to the fathers and that the Gentiles make glorify God for His mercy as it is written. For this reason I will confess to you among the Gentiles and seeing to your name. And again he says, Rejoice Gentiles, with his people. And again, praise the Lord all you Gentiles lord him, all you people and again, Isaiah says, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles in him the Gentiles shall hope. Now, may the God of hope, fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may have bound in hope, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able to admonish one another. Nevertheless, brethren, I have written more boldly to you on some points, as reminding you because of the grace given to me by God, that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ. To the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore I have reason to glory in Christ Jesus and things which pertain to God. For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient in men in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round two, i Li recom, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. And so, I have made it my aim to preach the gospel, not where Christ was mean, let's say should build on another man's foundation, but as it is written, to whom he was not announced, the shouts and those who have not heard, shall understand, well, what an amazing passage we have. We need to ask ourselves a What's this about? Be what's best verses summaries the sections and see what are we called to do and responses so first, and what's this about? Well, in verses seven through 13, he's wrapping up the conversation that he had started in chapter 14 verse one, remember how chapter 14 started, receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to dispute over doubtful things right and then here in verse seven, therefore receive one another, just as Christ also received us. So he's been writing to Jews and the Gentiles and now he's saying we receive one another, or he's wrapping this all up when he says, Therefore, it's a conclusion to this section. We probably could have broken this up better, but that didn't happen. That's okay. So we are to receive one another. Why because Christ has received us like Christ was given first to the Jews. Why? Because what does he see here? For the truth of God, to confirm the promises he made to the Father and that's what he says. There's eight that had made promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob he had given promises to the patriarch and Jesus was the fulfillment of those promises. Jesus is the answer and the amen to those promises that God given to the Jews and then also to the Gentiles, then also to the Greek See, this pattern has been all that since since chapter one, verse 16. He's not ashamed of the gospel of God first, or the gospel of Christ, where it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first, also to the Gentiles, or to the Greek. And so now he's saying, and yet it's also to the Greek and he quotes here the Old Testament, in all its different parts, the law, the prophets, the Psalms all over the place, that is Jesus Christ who brings in the Gentiles in verse nine. For this reason, I confess to you among the Gentiles and sing to your name. And then he quotes Deuteronomy here in verse 10, rejoice with Gentiles, with his people. And then in verse 11, he quotes Psalm 117. Praise the Lord all ye Gentiles, Lord him, all you people. And then in verse 12, he quotes Isaiah, there shall be a root of Jesse and he shall raise and he shall rise to bring over the Gentiles in him, the Gentiles shall hope see, it is Jesus Christ, who is has fulfilled all these prophecies, all the promises to the patriarchs. And as the pattern and the promise and fulfillment to all the world. And this is what fills our hearts with joy. That's what God says in verse 13. Now, may the God of hope this hope isn't just like wishing thought that's how we use. We use the word hope today. I hope that I get pizza tonight for dinner. That's not what this is saying. This is an eager expectation. Right this is, this is a certainty in the future. We can't see it, but we know it's true. Now, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing? How do we have true joy in believing how do we have true peace shalom, Erin in from leaving, when we begin to believe in what believing in Jesus Christ, we rejoice in the Lord, we believe in the Lord, that you make what are bound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Your life is to be overflowing with that eager expectation knowing that the Messiah has come and will come again. And this gives us joy, and this gives us peace. It makes our life filled with serenity, and tranquility. We might have all sorts of crazy stuff going on in our life. There might be things that bring us to absolute tears, but if you go and you read the Psalms, don't worry, read the Psalms and see how many of them are a huge chunk of our psalms of laments. And in the limits, the Psalm was pour out their heart to God. God these horrible things are going on in my life. But the intention that you are my role, but you are the faithful one, but you are the one who restores my soul. You are my strong tower in my defense, and lift up my eyes into the hill. Where does my aid come? Right? My help is in the Lord right hope in the Lord. Rejoice in the Lord have peace in your life because you have God. And then this final section here, what is this about? Verses 14 down through 21? Well, this is Paul saying y'all knew all this stuff already. You knew these things, you're competent to admonish one another when somebody's going astray. You know how to, to, you know, bring them to the right path. He's confident about this. He says that they are filled with goodness and knowledge but he needed to write to them boldly. Ancient people appreciated that when someone wrote frankly, there's a guy in our church. I know that if I need it, I need somebody to shoot it to me straight Don't Don't be soft with me. Just tell me what what you guys are concerned about. There's one guy I know I could go to and he's just gonna outright say he's a he's an ex army guy. He is gonna override I think you do this. I think we weren't mad about this. And he'll just tell me straight up how it is. And I really appreciate that. This is what Paul is doing. Here. He's telling them bold truth. And people are appreciative of that. And so it tells them that this is a grace that God's given to him to be a minister to be a servant. And what is his ministry look like? What is this grace that God has given him this gift of being an apostle to the Gentiles? Well, he acts almost like a priest, a priest who brings an offering to God not a neat or lambs or goats, nothing like that brings to God that nations. He brings a god the peoples of the world. So Paul says, Look, I didn't go and preach in other places where there were already churches established. He didn't go and he didn't make his ministry in Jerusalem, or in orangey data, or in Galilee, you know, like, no, no, where did he go? He went all over the world. We went through that a couple months ago as we worked in the book of Acts. So he went from Jerusalem, pretty much the center of the Jewish world all the way out to the furthest provinces right next to Rome. That's where this is talking about this province that he says where's this? Oh, I can't find it. There you go. Sorry, verse 19, in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and around to a Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ, as I lyric Congress is providence. Just east of it, just east of Rome at its heart. So Paul's gone all over the place. And he's preached the gospel and all these different lands. He's done in Asia Minor. He's done in Macedonia. He's done it on the islands. He's done it in in Athens. He's done it in court. He's, he's preached the Gospel all over the place. He's set up strategic churches. He's not building on other people's foundations, but his grace of ministries that have ministered to the Gentiles all over the Roman world. And he's fulfilled that. He says, I've been faithful network and still wants to go to Spain so I'm tell them a little bit. But he says he's been faithful. So what are the best verses? What's the best verses to get out? What's going on here? Well, I think I would underline verses eight, and nine, I think that's eight and nine are getting at the heart of what's going on in this first section. And then I think I would probably underline verse 62. And 17 Second section, you let me know, what would you want? Well, last C column. What are we called to do? In responses, how do we see Christ and lift us out in our own mind? Let me ask you, are you receiving others? Are you receiving others? Whether they're Jews or Gentiles? Are you receiving people of different ethnicities, languages, tribes, people? Maybe even those neighbors next door you don't really like all the time? Are you receiving? Are you bringing them price and if they receive Jesus Christ, are you showing them that this is where they have joy, and peace and hope? Do you notice joy, peace and hope? Are you and those Gentiles or maybe one of those Jewish people have the promises of God been confirmed to you as a Jewish person? As you have heard through this word, how Jesus Christ is the answer to all the promises of God? Are you a Gentile, who you have been brought in by grace, and you can thank the Lord that he has shown mercy on you. Let me ask you, how did you hear about Jesus? How did you hear about Jesus Christ? Was it your parents? Is it a pastor is a friend maybe a co worker is it a grandparent of you think that if you sit down to you please thank God for the grace that you've shown in your life. Will you be that person to see Psalm 52 or Isaiah 52 about Jesus in part, this is a servant for verse 21 says to whom he has not announced HLC and to and those who have not heard shall understand is God calling you in your life to share the good news with others who have not heard or have not seen? Maybe he's calling you to missions work abroad, to go tell people who have never heard about Jesus about Jesus or maybe he's calling you to go and tell your family members your neighbors, your friends, your co workers, about Jesus Christ. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much that you have shown us Jesus Christ. We pray that we will follow after work please watch over us. Please bless us. Father, we pray that we would be quick to share with people the joy, peace and hope that we have in Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit in Jesus's name, Amen. Amen. The Lord bless you today.
