Romans 9:30-10:13

Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and devotions. It's so good to have you this morning. This where every day you and I would get together. We have a little bit of coffee we get into the Lord's word and we grow in our luffa Lord together in this year 2022. We'll go all the way from the book of Acts to the book of fine Lehman and today we are finishing up Romans chapter nine and getting into Romans chapter 10. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into Lord's word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the rich blessing it is to sit at your feet to read your word. God we pray that we would have faith. We pray we would by the power of your spirit. be utterly dependent. We pray that you would bring many people to face in Jesus's name. Right here we go. Romans chapter nine beginning at Romans chapter nine beginning at verse 30. And we'll go through chapter 10. beginning or ending up restricting. What shall we say? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have obtained righteousness, even the righteousness of faith but Israel pursuing the law of righteousness has not attained to the righteous to the law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it by faith. But as it were, by the works of the law, where they stumbled at that stumbling stone as it is written. Behold, I lay a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on him will not be put to shame. And then in verse chapter 10, President my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel, is that they may be see, for I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For the being ignorant of God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness. have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the law in of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law. The man who does these things shall live by them. But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way. You're not saying your heart who will ascended to heaven, that is to bring price down from above, or who will descend into the abyss. That is to bring Christ up from the dead. But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. That is the word of faith which we preach that if you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with a heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture says, Whoever believes on him will not be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek. For the same LORD over all is rich, to all who call on him. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. But what an amazing passage we need to ask ourselves a What is this about? The what's the best verse? To summarize this and see, what do we call to do in responses? Well, the central question and chapter nine, beginning at verse 30, through chapter 10, beginning ending at verse 13, is, What is righteousness? How do we attain the righteousness of God? And why didn't the Jews get it? And what I do the Gentiles? And so the key answer here spoiler alert is Jesus. The righteousness of God is not a righteous of not of God is not our ability to keep the law. But the righteousness of God is manifest in a person in Jesus Christ. This is what he gets at. In this last part of Romans chapter nine, the Gentiles did not pursue righteousness. And yet they have attained it. Even the righteousness of faith to because our faith, the object of our faith, is the person of Jesus Christ in all of his ontological being, as the very Son of God, co eternal, the person of Jesus and also the work of Jesus. He is the Holy One the King of Righteousness. He is the one who, as a theologian say in his, in his active obedience, he kept the law perfectly he fulfilled the covenant of works. And also in his passive obedience, that he suffered, died, was buried, was raised again from the dead and ascended up into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father, and so it's it's this that separates Jew and Gentile, Christian and non Christian. Is this at the heart of what's going on? This is why he quotes here in verse 33, Isaiah 814 and 2816 Behold, I will lay in Zion, a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on him will not be put to shame See, whoever believes on Him. It is Jesus Christ. If we believe in Jesus Christ, we will not be put to shame. That's where our righteousness is. That's where our hope is. That's where our faith is. That's where we everything necessary for salvation and life is in the person who work with Jesus. This is the hope that he's saying I wish verse one, my heart's desire and prayer is that for Israel, they may be saved. For they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. And they want to pursue a righteousness as that's their own. But what they don't understand is they need to receive an alien righteousness. They need to receive a righteousness that's imputed to them a righteousness that comes from Jesus Christ. And so, verse three, four, they being ignorant of God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God what is the righteousness of God, the person of Jesus Christ, they have not submitted to the Messiah, they have not submitted to the Christ. They have not said Jesus Christ is Lord. And so they have rejected God's righteousness and they want to establish their own righteousness. Righteousness of work, so righteousness of their own duty, rather than a righteousness that comes by faith in Jesus. So he talks about this, in verse four for Christ is the end of the law. This is the idea of the completion of the law. If you want to know what the law is ultimately about and pointing to it's pointing to Jesus. For Christ as the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes not to everyone who, who works hard enough to follow Him, not to everyone who will ever measure up to this standard, not to everyone who will do enough good works No, that's establishing a righteousness by works. No, the righteousness is by those who believe righteousness comes by a clinging on to Christ. And you he says, This isn't just me talking. Go back to Deuteronomy chapter 30. Go read verses 12 through 14 and you'll find out that this is what Moses says, or the man who does these things shall live by them. But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way. You don't say in your heart, it will ascend up into heaven, or who will descend into the into the abyss? Why? Because they say, Well, I can't do this. I can't get up into heaven. You would say that's bringing Christ down right in Christ already done that. God himself came down and fulfilled this. And when he talks about who will descend into the abyss, that is to bring Christ up from the dead, right, Jesus Christ already went there. And he was raised for your justification. But what does it say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart. This is a righteousness that comes by faith. And this is why he says in the famous verses, Romans chapter 10, verse nine and that if you confess with your mouth, Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart, that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. To confess that Jesus Christ is your Lord is to confess that He is the Lord of righteousness, that he is the one who gives you His righteousness, that it is an alien righteousness. That you did not burn. You didn't establish it by the works of law, but it is established by beings that in the person and work of Jesus Christ, and His life, death, resurrection you will be seeing that as our as so he says in verse 10, For with the heart one believes, unto righteousness with the heart, one believes, unto righteousness, not by the works. One is declared righteous, purify the heart, one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Because out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks so the question is, Did you confess Christ? Do you believe that he is the Messiah? Is He the Lord of Glory? That the scripture says verse 11, whoever believes on him will not be put to shame. And this is why He says in verse 12, there is no distinction between you. For the same LORD over all is rich to all who call on him, whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. This is what the book of Ephesians is getting out that the wall of division between Jew and Greek has been torn down because now the only division is are you under Christ? Are you an enemy of Christ? Are you in Christ? Are you outside of Christ? Is Jesus Christ your Lord? Or are you a rogue in? Do you confess, Jesus Christ, what would you underline? If you're on Facebook or YouTube? From confessing Jesus Christ is Lord, have you built up your own image in your head that you are good enough somehow to enter into God's kingdom? is the object of your face your confession? That somehow you professed your sins one time? Or are you clinging to the person and work of Jesus Christ? Is Jesus. Your objective? Is the very Son of God. Your only hope in life and death? Is it Jesus Christ, not your theological knowledge? Not your good works, not your reputation. None of those things is your only hope that Jesus Christ is Lord and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. If this is so you will abandon abandon yourself. Abandon your own works abandon your own. Languages is Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is the one you love. In Him, we have all things I pray that you confess Jesus Christ, and that you fought to a righteousness that only comes by faith was part of you. Thank you, for Jesus Christ, our key, the king of the Lord of lords, the one who will come again to judge the living and the dead. The one who will make all things right again, or we wait for him are resurrected Lord who will come again. Father, I pray for anyone listening today that does not know you, that they might claim to you that they would know. They're safer than you. And then they might come into a living covenant or relationship with the kingdom of Jesus and might have life forever. In Jesus's name. Why pray that your eyes are filled with the glory of Jesus Christ. That God who raised up that great shepherd of the sheep would guard your heart and that you would walk in his ways.
