Proverbs 5:1-6

It's so good to see you today. It's a beautiful Wednesday morning. Ellie is at the doctor this morning getting her cast taken off her arm. So excited about that. Oh, it's so good to have you here with me this morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This is where every day we get together, we get into God's Word, and we grow in our love for the Lord together. So good to have you with me. We're going to work through all the wisdom literature in 2021, and today we're at Proverbs chapter 5, the first couple verses. Why don't we go ahead and have some coffee? We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. What a blessing it is to sit at your feet. Lord, we pray that as we read your word, that you would bless us, that you would care for us, that you would watch over us. In Jesus' name, amen.
All right, Proverbs chapter five. Remember, this is Solomon writing to his son, so this is good wisdom for a father to talk to his young boy about. All right, let's go ahead and talk. My son, pay attention to my wisdom, lend your ear to my understanding, that you may preserve discretion, and your lips may keep knowledge.
For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death, her steps lay hold of Sheol. Lest you ponder her path of life, her ways are unstable. You do not know them.
Well, what a timely passage today in a world full of sexual immorality where it's just shoved in your face all the time. You can't turn on the TV, watch YouTube, go on social media without just this flood. And here this father is instructing his son, right? What a timely, beautiful example of the wisdom of scripture. As Barry York said when we started Proverbs, This chapter specifically, writing to a young man and just being blatantly honest with him, right?
There's going to be a woman, she's a seductress woman, and it's going to look pleasurable. her ways go down to Sheol. Her ways lead to the grave. Don't go there. Just stay far away from her. And as we look through this, we're going to see both responsibility on the woman's part, but also on the man's part, on his son's part by the end.
And so here, for the lips of an immoral woman, drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil. You're just talking into it, sweet-talking you. And this goes for both males and females, right? I could see Olivia writing this to Debra. Don't go for any smooth-talking boy. right? Love your husband.
The reality here is that it's by the mouth that it's enticed. This is something that is extremely important to recognize. Emotional affairs normally, almost always, I don't want to be 100% here, but almost always precede sexual affairs. It's through the mouth, it's through flattery, it's through the giggles, it's through the emotional connection of talking and luring in. Her lips drip with honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil. She's going to entice you with her words first.
Don't go there, son. Don't be drawn in by it. But in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death. Her steps lay hold of hell, lest you ponder her path of life. Her ways are unstable." And then, interesting, you do not know them. You don't know. Son, I'm warning you right now. This is Solomon, right, saying, son, I'm telling you, you don't know where this is going to go.
So just don't listen to her. Stay far away from her path. It leads to death. And once again, I mean, we live in a society where this is sexual immorality and sexual expression is celebrated, not just like, oh, this is morally neutral. No, it's the good thing to sexually express yourself is what our society says. But here, no, hold on. Her feet go down to death. How many people suffer from the pains of their body because of STDs and such, because of sexual immorality? This isn't the way God designed us, right? The Lord made us to be healthy. And this immorality tears it down. And so when we look to Jesus Christ, when we look at what his plan for our life is, It's not immorality, but it's holiness.
It's to walk as children of the light, not as children of the darkness. And here this father is lovingly warning and telling his son, son, listen to me. Your body's gonna tell you one thing, the enticements are gonna be over here, but trust me, don't go there, son. It's gonna look good. This is something I tell kids in our congregation all the time. Sin looks good. Sin has a pleasure for its season. But sin always over-promises pleasure and always over-delivers guilt. Stay far away from it. Stay away from it. Just keep it over there.
Well, why don't we go ahead and pray. Father, we do pray that you, by your Holy Spirit, would keep us from sin. Lord, we know that we are sinful and our hearts are sinful and we, in our hearts, desire things that aren't good for us. Lord, we pray that you might cleanse us of sin and also keep us from the paths that lead there. Lord, please watch over us this day.
Please give us strength. Fill us with your Holy Spirit. We cannot do this on our own. Let us rest in Jesus Christ as children of the light. In his name we pray. Amen. Well, may the Lord bless you today. May you walk in the paths of light. And I'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
