Numbers 29:12-40

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're looking at Numbers chapter 29 verses 12 through 40 on the Feast of Tabernacles. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. That's right. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. And we pray that you would please help us, help us to understand your word. Please teach us what it means, why it's important and apply it to our lives. We pray this in Jesus's name. Amen. Here we go. Numbers chapter 29, beginning at verse 12.
On the first day of the seventh month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work, and you shall keep a feast to the Lord seven days. You shall present a burnt offering, an offering made by fire as a sweet aroma to the Lord, thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs in their first year. They shall be without blemish.
Their grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ephah for each of the thirteen bulls, two-tenths for each of the two rams, and one-tenth for each of the fourteen lambs, and one kid of the goats as a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.
On the second day present twelve young bulls to rams fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance. also one kid of the goats as a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering and its grain offering and their drink offerings.
All right, so now we're on the third day. On the third day present 11 bulls, 2 rams, 14 lambs in their first year without blemish and their grain offerings and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance.
Also, one goat has a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering. On the fourth day, present 10 bulls. So notice we've gone from 12 to 10, 11, now we're at 10. So ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish, and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance. Also one kid of the goats as a sin offering, beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering. On the fifth day present, so we've done, 11 10 9 now we're yeah so we've done 12 11 10 now we're at 9 9 bulls 2 rams and 14 lambs in their first year without blemish and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their Number, according to the ordinance, also one goat has a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering.
The number goes down again. On the sixth day, present eight bulls, two rams, and 14 lambs in their first year without blemish, and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance. Also, one goat as a sin offering, beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering, and its drink offering. On the seventh day present, isn't this nice? Seventh day, seven bowls. two rams and fourteen lambs in their first year without blemish and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls for the rams and for the lambs by their number according to the ordinance also one goat as a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering its grain offering and its drink offering now on the eighth day on the eighth day you shall have a sacred assembly you shall do no customary work You shall present a burnt offering, an offering made by fire as a sweet aroma to the Lord. One bull, one ram, seven lambs in their first year without blemish and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, for the ram, for the lambs, for their number, according to the ordinance.
Also, one goat as a sin offering beside the regular burnt offering, its grain offering and its drink offering. These you shall present to the Lord at your appointed feasts, beside your vowed offerings and your freewill offerings, as your burnt offerings and your grain offerings, as your drink offerings and your peace offerings.
So Moses told the children of Israel everything, just as the Lord commanded Moses. That was a lot to get through, right? The very last part is a kind of a concluding remark on all of chapter 28 and chapter 29. God told Moses all about these different things they were supposed to offer through these different ceremonies and sacrifices and festivals. And so that's, God gave it to Moses, Moses commanded it to the people. This very last one we looked at, this last of the great feasts, is the Feast of Tabernacles. Sometimes it's referred to as the Feast of Booths. This is the Harvest Feast.
This is where people remember, by going to Jerusalem every year, all the males they would go, and they would set up booths, tents, tabernacles, where they would remember, this is where God had brought them out of Egypt. He had redeemed them and they had dwelt in the desert They remembered that God had made them sojourn through that wilderness brought them over the Jordan River and gave them the land of promise and in that land of promise every year that they ate they remembered that that God was their Redeemer that God was their gracious provider and that God was their covenant-keeping King that he's the one who had done all these things as was a Historical past of all these things that had happened. It was based on his promises and he had made it good So this was their every year go to Jerusalem celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles, so that's what this is about Well, what's the best verse to summarize this?
Well, I think I would probably just underline verse 12. Maybe you would underline something different. That's fine. Seek calling. What are we called to do? Well, I think this is just baked into human nature, right? We forget things all the time. We forget God's covenant. We forget Jesus Christ. We forget that God is good to us. We are just dull people, right?
Because that's who we are. Stiff-necked, We're rebellious by nature, we constantly go our own ways, we're like sheep going astray, and we need to be reminded week in, week out, that God is our king. We need to be reminded of this regularly, that we need a sin offering, and his name is Jesus Christ. I'm convinced this is why Hebrews chapter 10 tells us, do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together, as is the habit or the manner of some. But no, as we see the day approaching, We ought to continue to encourage each other toward love and good deeds. That's what God has called us to do. And so we meet together to remember who He is, to encourage one another, to admonish one another, and to push one another towards loving even more. and doing good deeds. So I think this is this pattern that the Lord set. I don't think we celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles anymore.
I do know some messianic Jews who do do that, who follow Yeshua and they follow Jesus Christ. And I remember going to their house one time and they had this booth set up behind their house. And this was their way of still saying, OK, we just like the traditions, but see, we need to remember who we are and where we came from. I thought, what a beautiful thing.
The Lord gives us that in worship every week. And in the Lord's Supper, as often as we partake of that sacrament, we remember His death and His resurrection. And so I pray that you will avail yourself regularly, remembering that God keeps His promises. that your king reigns and that he has made a way for us to be made right with him through Jesus's son. Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for giving us your word. We thank you for giving us opportunities to remember who you are and to worship you. Lord, we pray that you would make us more faithful. For Lord, you know, we are prone to being fickle, but you are faithful day in and day out. Your mercies are new every morning.
