Numbers 10:1-10

Well, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. It's where every day you and I, we get together, we have a little bit of... Coffee! We get into God's Word and we grow in our love for the Lord together. You can have some. And this year, 2024, Lord willing, we'll make it through the books of Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Hebrews. But can I have more? You can't have more coffee. You don't need more coffee. Let's have some, well, we just had coffee.
Let's pray and we'll get into God's Word. Lord, we thank you so much for this day. What a blessing it is to get to read your Word, to spend time with each other. We pray that your Holy Spirit would please teach us now in Jesus' name. Amen. Alright, so we're at Numbers chapter 10. You ready? Yes, I am ready. Okay. This is going to be a hard one. Nope, you got it. Alright. Oh, yay. Can you read Numbers chapter 10, the first verse?
And the Lord spoke to Moses saying, Make two silver trumpets for yourself, and you shall make them of hammered work. You shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps. Alright, so he's going to make how many trumpets? Two. Two silver trumpets. And what are they going to use the trumpets for?
Um... They're going to use it for... drumming with the altar. Nope. So you shall use them for calling the congregation. You know how we have a cowbell to call you guys in for dinner? Yeah. So calling the congregation together. Yes. Very loud. And also for telling the troops what they're to do. Right? So when I was in boot camp, you know what they did? What?
We had whistles. and you would do a certain move. And they would have different whistle tones, and we knew what each whistle tone meant. Whether it meant stand at attention, or turn to the right, or turn to the left. Well, they would use actual trumpets here. Well, I don't know. How loud? I wasn't there. Well, here we go. Verse 3. Well, in boot camp, when I was in boot camp, they used a whistle instead. It was just a high-pitched whistle. Yeah! No. When they blew both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the Tabernacle of Meeting. Right? So if you hear both of them, and you hear the other one, everybody knows what are they supposed to do. Come on! Yep.
Come to the Tabernacle of Meeting. But if they only blow one, then the leaders, the heads of the division of Israel, shall gather to you." So if there's only one trumpet that blows, who gathers? The leaders. When you sound the advance, the troops that lie on the east side shall begin their journey.
So maybe the advance is like... So what if you like this? Oh, I don't know what exactly tune they did. I don't know what exactly tune they did. But at whatever the advancing tune was, Judah and the other two tribes with him would start out first. Right?
When you sound the advance the second time, the camps that lie on the south shall begin their journey. They shall sound the call for them to begin their journeys. When the assembly is to be gathered together, you shall blow, but not sound the advance." So there's different sounds for each different thing, right? Now verse 8. The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets, and these shall be to you as an ordinance forever throughout your generations." So, the sofar, which is the trumpet, right? Who's supposed to blow those? The people who... Should the king blow it? Should the leaders blow it? Yes. Nope. No, it's the priests. The priests, that's right. Aaron, the priests.
Okay, now verse 9, when you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you shall be remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. Alright, so they're going to go to war, they bring the trumpets, they sound the trumpets, And who is going to remember them? God. God himself, that's right. Also in the day of your gladness and your appointed feasts, and at the beginning of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, and they shall be a memorial for you before God.
So when they make a sacrifice, what are they going to do? Blow the trumpets. So would you hear these trumpets all the time? No, it was only at special times, right? Like Christmas. I am the Lord your God. Well, what do you think we learned about today? That they blew pretty loud, so everybody could hear them at least. And so, here's one of the things that I think is fun. Do you know that there's a trumpet blast mentioned in the Bible? Yeah. Do you want to know when it's going to happen? At the last day! That's right. You're silly. Yeah. At the last day. Yeah. At the last day. You're going to know that tune.
All the Christians, all the elect everywhere will hear that trumpet blast. And we will assemble. We'll assemble to our King. And who's our King? Jesus? Jesus, that's right. Jesus Christ. God is awesome. King. Oh, Jesus is the king. Well, they're one, son. They're basically a spirit. Well, okay. But Jesus in his resurrection does have a body, too. Yeah.
Okay, we don't need to get into the depth of Trinitarian theology, but the point is, right, King Jesus is going to come back in the clouds. Mm-hmm and blow trumpet. Well, the trumpets couldn't be blown the dead are gonna rise and We're going to assemble before him as a church triumphant. It could be a war song. Yeah. Well, that's exactly the point It's almost like a war song Okay, you ready to pray?
God, we thank you for this fun devotional that you've given us today about these trumpets. Lord, we pray that we would be prepared and ready for that last trumpet blast. That when Jesus Christ returns again that we might hear that sound, that the dead would be raised, and that your church would be assembled triumphant. For our King will return upon His white steed with a sword coming out of His mouth, and His robe dipped in blood and written upon His thighs, written the name King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And so, Father, we pray that we would be ready for that day. We thank You for the promise that You have given us that that day will come. In Jesus' name, Amen. Well, may the Lord bless you and may you know that your king lives and will return again.
