Unintentional and Intentional Sin

Well, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This is where every weekday morning, you and I, we get together, we have a little bit of coffee. You want any coffee? We get into God's word. Well, you can hold it with your own hands.
We get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together. And this year, 2024, Lord willing, we'll make it through the books of Numbers, Deuteronomy, and, you don't like it? No, that's fine. Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Hebrews. When we have some coffee, the good stuff from the Lord, we'll pray, we'll get to God's word. God is good. There's coffee. Are you ready to pray? Yeah. Lord, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing it is to get to read your word. We pray that we would understand it and that you would help us apply it. We need your spirit, God. Please help us in Jesus's name. Amen. OK, so we are at Numbers chapter 15. Numbers chapter 15. And we're going to start at verse 22. Numbers chapter 15 beginning at verse 22 and we're gonna read through verse 29.
Okay, so 15 through 29 What do you want to read the larger paragraph or the shorter paragraph Okay, so I'll read the first paragraph If you sin unintentionally and do not observe all these commandments, which the Lord has spoken to Moses all that the Lord has commanded you by the hand of Moses from the day of the Lord until From the day the Lord commanded, gave commandment and onward throughout your generations, then it will be, if it is unintentionally committed, without the knowledge of the congregation, and the whole congregation shall offer one bull as a burnt offering, as a sweet aroma to the Lord, with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the ordinance, and one kid of the goats as a sin offering.
So the priests shall make atonement for the whole congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them, for it was unintentional. They shall bring their offering, an offering made by fire, to Jehovah. and their sin offering before Yahweh for their unintended sin. It shall be forgiven the whole congregation of the children of Israel and the stranger who dwells among them, because all the people did it unintentionally. And you want to read 27 to the end of that section?
And if a person sins unintentionally, then he shall bring a female goat in its first year as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for the person who sins unintentionally, when he sins unintentionally before the Lord, to make atonement for him. and it shall be forgiven him. You shall have one law for him who sins unintentionally, for him who is native born among the children of Israel and for the stranger who dwells among them. OK, so there's kind of like two different categories here, right? One is if a person sins unintentionally. And the other is if a person sins what?
Intentionally. Intentionally or like presumptuously right like The the idea here is like they're they're sinning with an uplifted hand We're gonna talk about that more next time but there's two different types of sins here so What happens if people sin unintentionally in Israel? The priest shall make atonement for them. That's right, right? There's a sacrifice for them, right?
So you sin, you didn't mean to sin. Oh, man, I blew it again. I didn't even realize it. What was I thinking? What was I doing? I didn't mean this like to be mad at God. I just I was following what I just totally forgot the law, right? It was out of my head. I was doing what I wanted to. I feel so bad about this.
And you offer a bowl. That's right, there can be a sin offering, right? But, what about the person who says, I just don't care. I don't care that I sinned, it doesn't matter, whatever. What's it say in that section part? That's the part you read. Oh, sorry. Nope. I'm getting ahead of myself. Uh, that's, oh, were we supposed to cover those verses too? Did I mess it up? Nope. This is just an unintentional sentence. Okay. Sorry.
The unintentional sentence is, uh, what I'm going to do with somebody else, uh, for 30 through 32, I think. I was like, oh, No, no, no, we're going to do that now. But the person who does anything presumptuously, whether he is native born or a stranger, that one brings reproach upon on the Lord and he shall be cut off from among his people because he has despised the word of the Lord and has broken his commandment. That person shall be completely cut off and his guilt shall be upon him. All right. So This is somebody sinning with a high hand. So when it says presumptuously, the idea is there's somebody sinning with a high hand. I don't care that I sinned against God. I wanted to do what I wanted to do and you can go eat rocks. What's the Lord say happens to that type of person? He has to leave. He's like banished. He's banished. Why? Why is he cut off? Because he's shaming the Lord. That's right, he's shaming the Lord. Who's the king of Israel? God. God himself, right? And to say to God, I don't care about your laws. I don't care about your commandments. I just don't care about you. What might that do in the congregation? That might make other people not think about that. Yeah, does the Lord take this lightly?
No, right and so the the law then was cut them off. What do you think is the best verse to summarize this section? 22 you like 22 Okay. If you sin unintentionally and do not observe all these commandments, which the Lord has spoken, which the Lord has spoken to Moses. Okay. So there's unintentional. Maybe I would underline two or 22 would be good. Um, I might also underline verse 23, right about the presumptuous sin. So there's two different types of sins here.
What do you think this calls us to do? Um, to repent when we sin. Repent we said right is it could it be easy for us to dig in our heels and say I just don't care what God says Yeah, would that be good Yeah, right have you seen people do this before it's a pretty scary I think this is what the New Testament talks about, right? If somebody is going to continue on in their sins like this, this is why we do church discipline.
And some people don't like that. They'll call it church hurt, they'll say it's mean, they'll say it's authoritative, they'll say it's a power grab or something like that, right? But the question in our mind is, are we the final authority? Who's the final authority?
God is. So the elders, who do we have to submit to? God. God. What about fathers? Who do they have to submit to? God. What about mothers? God. What about deacons? God. What about children? God. What about the Israelites? God. Right? It's his nation. We're his people. And so we follow him.
But if you don't want to follow him, I don't care about God. I don't care about his laws. I'm going to do what I want to do. What does the Lord say? All right, you're going to get cut off. Because you're showing you're not one of my people, if you're not willing to follow after me. And so he cut off. God is Doing what the person already wants to do with their own actions now this is interesting right because just before this is when the spies went to the end of the land to spy it out and What did God say?
They would Where they supposed to go and take the land yeah, they came back and they said no we're not gonna go and And wasn't there also a prophecy that one would stand against eleven? Yeah, like a thousand. It was going to be a big, they're going to have great success and they didn't want to go. They sinned presumptuously, right?
We know God said we're supposed to go, but we're not going to go. And said, we're going to go back to Egypt. And Moses said, whoa, Lord, stop them, right? He's going to kill them all. God doesn't do that. He says, OK, but I'm going to make them wander in the wilderness.
Do you know what they tried to do? What? They said, we're not going to wander in the wilderness. We're going to go up and we're going to take the land now. Moses said, boys, don't do it. It's not going to end well. And guess what they still did? They still went up. They still went up. And what happened? They died. Yeah, they lost in the battle. So there's this presumptuous sin that has been going on. And I'm going to do devotions with another kid, but maybe one of the things you could do is read verses 32 through 36 sometime about the person who, right after this commandment about presumptuous sins, breaks the Sabbath on purpose.
Yeah, we got a lot to apply in our lives about this, don't we? Is it hard to keep God's commandments? So do you think this is telling us, okay, there's no hope if you ever break his commandments? What's our only hope? God. Right. And so we need to, this isn't saying we're going to be sinless, but do we hate God? Do we lift up our hand and say, I hate you and I'm not following you? No. Or do we say, Lord, I'm trying to follow you. I stumble, I mess up, I fail, but you love me and I love you. Yeah. You ready to be done? Yeah. It's kind of a hard section, isn't it? Yeah. Okay. Lord, this is a very emotionally difficult section. It's not easy.
As we think about people who have walked away from you, who have sinned with upraised fists. Lord, but we pray that you would give us humility. We pray that we would be subject to you. Follow you and love you. Help us, Lord, we pray in Jesus's name. Amen. May God bless you. May you follow the Lord. May you know that if you follow him, the blood of his son, Jesus Christ, does pay for your sins. May you love him all your life. Say bye. Bye. Bye.
