Luke 6:6–19

[Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this thursday morning that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends before my kids wake up you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we're at let's say luke chapter 6 verses 6 through 19 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray lord we thank you so much for what a rich blessing it is to be in your word father we pray that we would understand it we pray that it would lord that it would feed our souls lord that it would be our daily bread father we might know you that we might see you that we might walk in your paths and lord that we might indeed be children of the light in jesus name amen well let's go ahead and get into god's word this morning luke chapter 6 beginning at verse 6. now it happened on another sabbath also that he entered the synagogue and taught and a man was there whose right hand was withered sorry so the scribes and pharisees watched him closely whether he would heal on the sabbath that they might find an accusation against him but he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand arise stand here and he arose and stood then jesus said to them i will ask you one thing is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do evil to save life or to destroy and when he had looked around at them all and he said to them to the man stretch out your hand and he did so and his hand was restored as whole as the other but they were filled with rage and discussed with one another what they might do to jesus and then this next section here versus 12 to 19 now it came to pass in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to god and when it was day he called his disciples to himself and from them he chose twelve whom he also named apostles simon whom he also named peter and his and andrew his brother james and john philip and bartholomew matthew and thomas james the son of alphaeus and simon called the zealot judas the son of james and judas iscariot who also became a traitor and he came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all judea and jerusalem and from the seacoast of tyre and sidon who came to hear him and healed of and be healed of their diseases as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits and they were healed and the whole multitude sought to touch him for power went out from him and healed them all well what great two passages we have for us today the first continues this theme of who jesus is about the old and the new about the ways of the pharisees and their teaching the ways the jewish people at that time had understood the law versus what now the law was supposed to be in light of the messiah coming and so remember yesterday we had looked at the sabbath when jesus right he had taken the grain he and his disciples and they had rubbed the heads off and popped them in their mouth and people were incensed at them right hold on why are you doing something that's unlawful on the sabbath and jesus says look i'm the lord of the sabbath there's works of necessity that need to happen and here jesus again he's in the synagogue and there's a man there he has a withered hand and they're looking at jesus they're just waiting for jesus to do a miracle they just can't wait to try to trap him to ensnare him to be upset with him and what does jesus do may jesus ask them ask them the question arise stand here he stood there and jesus said to them if i will ask you one thing is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do evil to save life or to destroy now this should be this should be a no-brainer question right this is an obvious question have you have you ever asked a child or heard a child or maybe you have been that child who has been asked a rhetorical question by your parents or a real question and and it's you know what the answer is supposed to be don't you but you know if you say it you know it proves that you're wrong and so you see the kid you know bite their lip or just kind of look around or maybe make kind of look down and they'll play with their toes or something you know they they don't want to get to what the truth is and jesus jesus is upset with them at this right he looked around at them and he said to the man stretch out your hand all right jesus heals on the sabbath see they they hadn't gotten it the sabbath to them was a bunch of rules and regulations the sabbath to them was about how they were supposed to keep themselves holy but the point of the sabbath was that they were supposed to find rest in the one who is holy and that jesus the lord of the sabbath is right there in front of them and jesus comes to bring life and to bring abundantly jesus comes to heal the sick jesus comes to restore what is broken and lost jesus comes to give life and here the messiah is in front of them but their hearts are so hardened towards him that when he heals this man on the sabbath they are enraged in him they are upset with them and they talk amongst themselves how they might what they might do to him what's the best verse for this well i think the best verse is going to be verse 9 and the first half of verse 10. right jesus is the lord of the sabbath jesus is the lord of the sabbath there are works of necessity and there are works of mercy that need to be done on the sabbath do we show love in how we keep the lord's day well the next part is jesus calling the 12 disciples here a few things just to point out real quick notice that jesus is out and he's he's going on the mountain and he's praying all night long this is a pattern we see again and again and again the gospels that the son and the father are one and that jesus is always seeking communion with his father he wants to go out and pray he wants to spend time in prayer with his father and here we find he called his twelve disciples to himself and he calls them apostles that word apostle is is literally just a greek word put into english it means sent ones and it labels those 12 disciples or apostles for us and then we learn that jesus's fame is going throughout the region right all throughout judea and jerusalem even along the seacoast of tyre and sidon right people are coming from all over to hear jesus and to be healed by jesus and they were healed and the whole multitude thought to sought to touch him for power went out from him him and healed them so if i had to summarize these two sections of my bible i would say jesus is the merciful lord of the sabbath and jesus is the merciful one who is sending out his messengers so that's how i would write those in my bible but maybe you would write something different for what is this about well the best verse for me for this section second section is i would actually underline um verse 13 here and when it was a day he called to himself and from them he chose 12 whom we also named apostles but we have to ask ourselves at the end of this now c calling what are we called to do in response to this but on the sabbath do you see this as a blessing do you see opportunities to show mercy to others do you find a day in which you are able to both reflect on the mercy of god and maybe there's a ministry that you have been thinking about helping out on and maybe sabbaths maybe the christian sabbath on sunday as it's a great day for you to be able to go and to do that work of mercy well we can also ask ourselves you know have for some of us who do uphold the christian sabbath have we been overly legalistic about this right have we been so judgmental on others that we haven't loved showing mercy well also the last thing we need to i think we can see ourselves here in this in this next section and you're more than welcome i love hearing your own comments just to let you know somebody even took up the challenge and they they told me i'm going to fast this week and i'm going to pray so i'm always encouraged when i hear those types of commitments that the holy spirit is laying on your heart and so this last section you know jesus has sent out his 12 disciples his 12 apostles but god is still sending people today the book of romans specific sorry about that this is a different camera i'm working on uh the the book of of roman specifically talks about how can they have faith if they don't if they do not hear and how can they hear if they do not have a preacher and so we need to ask ourselves are we being sent are there people maybe maybe you're one maybe you're a man watching this right now when you've been pushing back right because you've felt like i'm inadequate to share the good news of jesus christ brothers and sisters god calls people to share his gospel and he sends them out with the power of his holy spirit and so i don't know if that's you let me know if you think it is i'd love to have a conversation with you let's go ahead and pray this morning lord we thank you so much for this day father we pray that you would bless us and care for us lord that we would look to you with joy for the mercy that you have shown us thank you that you are our sabbath thank you that we have rest in jesus christ lord we thank you that you have healed us lord we thank you that you have sent out your good news and that you have lord been bringing more and more people to yourself please please lord bless us this day in jesus name amen i pray the lord blesses you today and that you go about in the peace of jesus christ bye
