Luke 15:11-32

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this friday morning october 2nd this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends before my kids wake up or when i get a spare moment from them you and i we get together we have some coffee and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well thanks for joining me this morning we have the parable of the lost son or some might title this paragle the prodigal son why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll get into god's word lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the blessing it is to be in your word and we thank you for your never-ending love for us we pray father that we would be in all of your grace this morning and that you would apply these words to our hearts in jesus name amen let's go ahead and jump into the text luke chapter 15 beginning at verse 11. then he said a certain man who had two sons and the younger of them said to his father father give me the portion of goods that fall to me so he divided down to them his livelihood and not many days after the younger son gathered all together journeyed to a far country and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living but when he had spent all there arose a severe famine in that land and he began to be in want then he went and journeyed himself to a citizen of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed swine and he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate and no one gave him anything but when he came to himself he said how many of my father's hired servants have bred enough to spare and i perish with hunger i will arise and go to my father and i will say to him father i have sinned against heaven and against you and i am no longer worthy to be called your son make me like one of your hired servants and he arose and came to his father but when he was still a great way off his father saw him and had compassion and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him and the son said to him father i have sinned against heaven and in your sight and am no longer worthy to be called your son. but the father said to his servants bring out the best robe and put it on him and put on a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet and bring the fattened calf here and kill it and let us eat and be merry for this my son was dead and is alive again and he was lost and is found and they began to be merry now his older son was in the field and as he came and drew near to the house he heard music and dancing so he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant and he said to him your brother has come and because he has received him safe and sound your father has killed the fattened calf but he was angry and would not go in therefore his father came out and pleaded with him so he answered and said to his father lo these many years i have been serving you i never transgressed your commandments at any time and yet you never gave me a young goat that i might make merry with my friends but as soon as this son of yours came who devoured your livelihood with harlots you killed the fattened calf for him and he said to him son you are always with me and all that i have is yours it was right that we should make mary and be glad for your brother was dead and is alive again and was lost and is found well what a beautiful passage of god's grace we have for us this morning isn't it this is these words are pretty marvelous why don't we go ahead and just look at the story and break it down a little bit this is the parable of the lost sun that's what i would put in the margin of my bible i might put that as a header i'd be fine with prodigal son or something like that but you know what i would really put i put the amazing grace of god that's what i would put probably in the margin of my bible what was this passage talking about well we see a few things here don't we we we see that this is once again something lost we had the lost sheep then we had the lost coin and now we have the lost son and this son is a wicked son right his father is still alive and he wants his inheritance now and his father for some reason splits up the inheritance gives it to both of his sons one son stays home obeys his father does all he commands and the other son goes off for wild living and he goes and he squanders all of his father's wealth all of his inheritance on this wild living and what does he do when he comes home or when all of his money is out he's hungry he's a slave he's feeding pigs this is a good jewish boy why why in the world would would you want to go feed pigs or unclean gross animals but he's just he he's so destitute that he would even eat the slop that the pigs are eating but the farmers won't even give him the slop that's how detestable this person is the farmers won't even give him live food or livestock food they just they won't give them silage they won't no no you're not you're not worth any of it he says i know what i'll do i'll go i'll go and i'll plead with my father and he he rehearses this conversation look at me up here at this conversation he rehearses with to his father he says father i have sinned against heaven and before you i am no longer worthy to be called your son make me like one of your hired servants right that's that's that's the the speech he has rehearsed how he is going to confess and plead with his father but it's amazing what has happened isn't it who's looking for who and when he arose and came to his father but when he was still a great way off his father saw him and had compassion on him his father was waiting for him his father was looking at the horizon for him his father was ready for him and then his father did something that in the ancient near east would be crazy he picked up his his his tunic and the father ran to the sun this is not the normal way things happen this is no no good dignified middle eastern father would ever pick up his tunic and run no that's what little kids do but here the father is so excited the father is so rejoicing the father is so glad to see this son that was lost come home that he runs to him not the son running to the father but the father running towards the child and when he gets there he wraps his arms around him and he's he kisses his neck he is so excited to finally see his son who was dead but is now alive but it's amazing the son tries to get out his rehearsed speech but he can't do all of it for i have sinned against heaven and in your sight and am no longer worthy to be called your son the father's not going to hear any of it he stops him he doesn't even get the chance to be to ask can i be one of your hired servants no no he is his son he loves this son he cares for the son his grace is going to envelop this son he is going to pour out his love upon the son does the son not see that he is treasured by his father and his father has been searching for him looking for him desiring for the day that he would come his father interrupts him but the father said to his servants bring out the best robe put it on him and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet i mean he the guy is destitute again he's probably sold everything he has to keep up his sinful lifestyle he doesn't even have sandals on his feet or the ones he does have are so worn out he couldn't even keep his his physical maintenance together anymore and the father looks at his servant he says no no come on come on come on come on let's let's let's put a robe on him let's put the signet ring back on his hand he's part of the family he has authority here put the shoes on his feet let's he's he's back more than just that let's throw a feast right we're gonna as one of my friends said as we we've been reading through these texts together he says you know and they threw a barn raisin right they were happy and excited about this but there's an interesting thing isn't there there's a twist all the others the other two stories ended with rejoicing this story ends with the picture of the scribes and the pharisees but the older brother was there wasn't he and he wasn't satisfied he was actually upset with the father why i've kept all your commandments i've never disobeyed you but here this sun goes off to it wasted your wealth with harlots and you kill a fattened calf you haven't even given given us a goat he doesn't understand that hold on being the son being the child doesn't depend upon obedience of commandments but upon grace and love and the older brother thought oh you know this is this is my responsibility and i need to maintain this relationship but the older son didn't realize that his relationship with his father was based on that grace and love of his father for him i fear there's many people this is a preachy type coffee and devotions that's okay but i fear there's a lot of people in the church who see themselves as older brothers you know people who feel like they have to maintain god's love who feel like they have to earn being a son who feel like as long as they keep all the commandments and do everything the father obeys that then the father will love them and then the father will reward them and then you might even find yourself at times being upset you know when that person walks into the sanctuary for church and why are we showing this person all that care right she's lived a life of prostitution and drugs why are we gonna show that person that type of care they don't they have their do you know what type of pornography they're into do you know the type of name they have in the community and we're excited that they're coming to church are you kidding me that's exactly the point here how did all this start about about these lost things then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to him to hear him and the pharisees and scribes complained saying this man receives sinners and eats with them so jesus gave these three parables and he ends it with the older the older brother talking about them why are they mad that tax collectors and sinners are coming to the to the savior why are they sad that the yahweh who can take away their sins emmanuel god with us is there before them and he's receiving back those who are repenting and turning unto god and they're upset i've obeyed all your commandments i've done everything and you're receiving them yeah yeah because while we were yet sinners god's demonstrated his own love for us we are sinners and god is gracious and loving are we gracious are we loving do we rest in god's grace do we rest in god's love or or is your heart been cold to god's grace and his love i don't know let me know down in the comments your thoughts let's go ahead and pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we thank you for your grace and your mercy we thank you for giving it to us in such a beautiful picture but father we pray or do
