Luke 1:34–56

[Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] my [Music] do hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this friday morning july 31st that's where every weekday morning at 9 a.m and on the weekends before my kids wake up you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are coming from my mobile setup down here in the basement so i hope you guys enjoy this morning we'll see how this works over the next week or so this morning we are at luke chapter 1 beginning at verse 34 going down through verse 56. let's go ahead and pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word lord we thank you for the beauty that you surround us with your grace that you shower down upon us your mercy that you show us every morning we thank you lord that your compassions fail not and that your mercy is new every morning father we pray now that as we get into your word that you would bless us lord that we would hear your word that we would understand your word that you would bless us lord with believing it in jesus name amen well luke chapter 1 beginning at verse 34. here we go then mary said to the angel how can this be since i do not know a man and the angel answered and said to her the holy spirit will come upon you and the power of the highest will overshadow you therefore also that holy one who is to be born will be called the son of god now indeed elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age and this is now the sixth month for her who is called barren for with god nothing will be impossible then mary said behold the maidservant of the lord let it be to me according to your word and the angel departed from her now mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste to a city of judah and entered the house of zacharias and greeted elizabeth and it happened when elizabeth heard the greeting of mary that the babe leaped in her womb and elizabeth was filled with the holy spirit then she spoke out with a loud voice and said blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb but why is this granted to me that the mother of my lord should come to me for indeed as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears the babe leaped in my womb for joy blessed is she who believe for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the lord and mary said my soul magnifies the lord and my spirit has rejoiced in god my savior for he has regarded the lowly state of his maidservant for behold henceforth all generations will call me blessed for he who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is his name and his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation he has shown strength with his arm he has scattered the proud and the imaginations of their hearts he has put down the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly he has filled the hungry with good things and the riches he has sent away empty he has helped his servant israel in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers to abraham and to his seed forever and mary remained with her about three months and returned to her house well what a beautiful passage we have before us this morning in these two different sections so let's go ahead and start by asking ourselves a what is this about a what is this about well we really have two different sections here don't we we have verses 34 down through verse 38 and this is where the angel is still talking to mary so i don't think i would have split up the verses the way that the bible reading uh application here did for us but that's okay right this is the continued conversation between the the angel gabriel and mary and remember yesterday that gabriel had made this promise from the lord to mary that she was going to have a child but here the obvious has happened right mary says whoa whoa hold on hold on right uh i don't understand why you're talking to me this way but we got we got bigger issues than this right uh how can this be since i do not know a man right this is this is the biblical way of saying i'm a virgin i've never been married i've never known a man i've never i've never been like that you know she's if we were to put this into street slaying with mary and the angel she says i don't get down like that with guys hold on so you you must got something wrong here how's that going to happen and what's the what's the angel tell jesus what is he or what does gabriel tell mary jesus isn't going to be born a natural way jesus is going to be born by the holy spirit and indeed that's what what happens after that well she gets and she goes out to elizabeth's house she goes to her cousin's house and this amazing this amazing thing happens right the the angel tells her this is all something amazing has happened with elizabeth right with with people you thought you didn't think this was possible with god all things are possible and so what does she do she gets on her her animal and she heads out and she goes and she finds elizabeth and it's amazing what elizabeth says right elizabeth greets mary and the the babe leaped in her womb and elizabeth elizabeth was filled with the holy spirit man this is this is so much cool stuff going on right now elizabeth bless her to you among women blessed is the fruit of your womb but why is it granted to me right this is the older woman talking to the younger woman this is the older woman the older lady talking to the younger lady and she's holding her up she's saying whoa why am i so blessed that you're coming here and talking to me and it's amazing what she says after that that the mother of my lord should come to me even elizabeth recognizes the baby within mary's womb is not any ordinary child but the baby in mary's womb is her lord her curios her master and she's humbled by this and she and she's the one who says it right when as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears the babe leaped in my womb for joy john the baptist is so excited that his his cousin his savior his messiah his christ his lord the one that is greater than he is there and he leaps within the womb right the this is just what the angel had promised that even from the womb john would be filled with the holy ghost blessed is she who believed remember it was zacharias who didn't believe but here mary believes for there will be a fulfillment of those things which are told offer from the lord and then we have the exquisite magnificent uh magnificent of of mary singing out god's praises singing out about how wonderful the lord is and and how how strong and mighty the lord is how the lord looks down on the lowly how the lord has spoken to the to the patriarchs to abraham into his seed how the lord has cared for mary and how she is going to be remembered as blessed now people have taken that way too far right there there are people who have taken that teaching and has gone too far but this is indeed amazing that someone is born of a virgin this is one of the beautiful truths of the gospel that jesus the true second adam is born not by natural means but indeed god has remembered the lowly state of his people and and he is going to save his people from their sins so what is this about well this is about the virgin birth about the messiah being both promised and realized even in the womb and so i don't know how there's so much here how would you how would you summarize this just give me one sentence right i'm going to challenge you with that this morning yesterday i asked you because i didn't have my computer handy online to highlight and show you guys but this morning i want you to tell me how would you summarize these two sections in one sentence it's gonna be tough apply your mind i wanna see how you kind of get there let me know down in the comments will be what are we what would we underline as the best verse well up here i think i'm going to underline uh verse 37. but not not just that all right upgrade also underline verse 35. all right how is this going to happen is going to be by god's doing and then mary with elizabeth i am going to underline the first part of verse 32 all the way down here 43 and 44. again i'm breaking my rules i know it's okay would you underline something else that that's fine that's fine uh i don't know how i would underline anything specific in 46 through 56 maybe if i was to to underline any anything it would be this 44 and 45. and why i say that is jesus is being born was all about showing god's mercy to his people israel his promises being fulfilled so that's what i would do that's what i would underline in my bible well now we're we're running late here and that's okay we need to ask ourselves c calling what are we called to do in response to these words well i think we can clearly ask the question do you believe right we can remember the words of the apostles creed right i believe in god the father almighty but then we also have to ask do we believe in jesus christ the one who is born of a virgin mary who lived a perfect life do you believe in the virgin birth this is this is the core of the christian faith if we don't believe in the virgin birth we're going to lose our theology of the atonement if we it's from the theology of the virgin birth that we have a true second adam it's the theology of the second birth that we have a messiah who can reign upon the throne of david without any sin it is this jesus christ born of the virgin mary by which god shows his mercy he does the impossible he he brings life where life shouldn't be possible this is incredible that the god of the universe humbled himself to the likeness of a man oh this is good news do we believe it will we share it it's not the world doesn't understand it but it is the heart of the christian hope well let's go ahead and pray this morning lord we thank you so much that you are merciful to us every day we thank you father that you love us and that you care for us lord that you sent your only begotten son your one unique son lord that you might save us and fulfill all your covenant promises lord we pray that you would bury these truths in our hearts and that you would bless us in jesus name amen i pray that you go about today filled with grace and with peace and the hope of the truth of jesus christ bye
