Judges 2:1-6

Good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're at Judges, Chapter 2. We're at the first six verses. Yesterday we got back into the book of, or got into the book of Judges, and we saw that they didn't drive them out, didn't drive them out, didn't drive them out, didn't drive them out, and now we're going to find out Lord had known this was gonna happen the whole time.
So Nathan's gonna take a nap Well, the Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites Zebulun didn't drive out the inhabitants of Kittron Neftali didn't drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh And so they didn't drive out. They didn't drive out. They didn't drive out. They didn't drive out.
They didn't So that's we're gonna be talking about today Let's have some coffee. I think you need it. We'll pray. We'll get into God's word. I have a nap for a few hours. Well, you're yawning like you need some coffee. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. We pray that your Holy Spirit would please help us as we read your word to understand it in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. So be careful with your toes, right? You don't want to turn that power button off. All right. Judges chapter two. You want to start the reading or do you want me to? Are we reading to verse 6? 1 through 6, yeah. I'll read. 1, 2, 3.
Then the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bakim and said, I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to. Your fathers and I said I will never break my covenant With you and you shall make no covenant with the habitants of this land and you shall tear down their altars But you have not obeyed my voice. Why have you done this therefore? I also I also said I Will not drive them out before you but they shall be thrown at your side and their God shall be a snare to you So it was, when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept. Then they called the name of that place Bochim, and they sacrificed there to Jehovah. And when Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went to his own inheritance to possess the land.
Well, we need to ask ourselves our three questions. A, what is this? B, what's this? And C, what are we? All right, so what is this about? It's kind of like, Dad was like, hey, don't get buddy-buddy. And I got buddy-buddy. And he's like, eh, I'm not. told you to do something. You didn't do it. It's going to bite you in the butt later. Yeah. Right. Interestingly, right. Because because the book of Judges, right.
It was it was a none of God's word had failed. And it's just one of these interesting things that it's the first two chapters of Judges. It's difficult to know exactly when This is cuz kind of going back and forth and back and forth, right? But it's very clear because it says that Josh was there And when Joshua had dismissed the people Right, so this seems to be happening during the time of Josh was life. I But yet, there's also parts where it seems to be going forward. And so it's a little bit challenging to wrap our heads around this, but it's very clear, even during Joshua's life, that people are not following the Lord's covenant. And you're right, it's bit them in the butt.
So the angel of the Lord appears, and it comes up from Gilgal to Bokim. So that's the place of weeping. And why do they name it the place of weeping? Because they cry. Because what's the angel of the Lord tell them? She's going to bite you in the butt.
Yeah, right. And they haven't listened to the Lord. Is it because the Lord wasn't faithful to his covenant? He was faithful to his covenant. So what's gone wrong? It's like he chose not to. Yeah, he chose non-perfect people. And so, uh, so he shows non-perfect people and even ask, why have you done this?
What's our answer? Give an answer. Nope. Oh, I think they just had to slip. Yeah. They can't say anything. There's no reply, right? I think it's the way that we will find ourselves at the judgment day. You were liking to play with electronics with your feet today, man. Sorry, you guys can't see it, but I've got some electronics here on the floor that things are plugged into it. And I'm like, oh, dude, keep your feet off the stuff.
But when we've sinned at the last judgment day and God says, I told you not to do that. Why did you? I'm not gonna say anything probably not gonna have much of an answer am I no no it's just gonna be Because I'm an idiot Lord Because my heart's that wicked that's how much I need Jesus And so they're crying out to the Lord right they need him They need their Heavenly Father to be merciful to him that doesn't remove their Transgression Yeah, it doesn't lighten the sin, but it's... It stinks, right? And he tells them, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall be thorns in your side and their gods will be a snare to you.
And we find this. We're going to find it all throughout the book of Judges. We'll find it all throughout the historical literature. We'll find it in Jeremiah. We'll find it in Joel. It's all over the place. Right? Their gods have become a snare to them. Yes, and going to Babylon. Yeah, yeah. Back out and get back in and get back out. Yeah.
So it's a... Somebody decided, hey, you know, we don't need all this again. Nobody's talking about this is gonna cause us 90 years pain yeah, right, so this is well 70 years, but yeah It's an ugly ugly scenario and situation isn't it? So go ahead and you're gonna walk out of here and grandma's gonna say what in the world you talk with your dad about People who are wiser than you normally know it's best for you That sounds like quite a moralistic... I mean, this is a historical...
What did you learn in the Bible today, Nathan? What did the Bible say, Nathan? That's what your grandma's gonna say. That's what the Bible said. No, that's not what it said. That's what I took away from it. Well, that might be what you took away from it, but we need to understand what it actually said. What was this about? Israelites weren't obeying... They didn't obey God, and God said He's gonna make them. Yeah, right. So that's what this is about. It's very important that we distinguish that, right? There's a big difference between what we take away from it, right? What lesson we might learn for our lives versus what did it historically say, right?
What were the words on the page? The words on the page are the angel of the Lord tells them, God promised he wouldn't break his covenant, but you're not keeping your side of the covenant. They had vowed to keep their side of the covenant. They had said they were going to drive these people out and they didn't. You have a covenant keeping God and covenant breaking people. And as they break the covenant, they commit spiritual adultery and it's going to be a snare to them. And so they weep over it. And so the children of Israel each go to his own inheritance to possess the land.
All right, what do you think is the best verse to summarize this? I was thinking six, Four and five. Oh, interesting. Okay. Yeah, I have three, uh, two and three underlined in my Bible. Okay. Uh, all right. So let's, let's go ahead and start talking about seek calling. What are you called to do? Listen to people wiser than you. I knew what he was talking about. He made it like he told them. Oh, so by person you mean God. Yeah. Like I listen to you. Sometimes. Is it normal to walk out from my watch? Sometimes. Unless you tell me to jump on the couch.
Yeah, but my point being right is that there is a God who has told us sin will be a snare to us. And yet what do we often chase after? Yeah, right sinful desires that wage war within us All right, we go after those desires of the flesh rather than those things of God There's things that we don't want to do and yet for some stupid reason we do them There's good things that we know that we ought to do and for some for no reason We don't know why we just don't do the good thing. We want to What hope is there for us Jesus Thanks be to God for the Lord Jesus Christ, right? Therefore, there's now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
The people during Joshua's day and during the judge's day would never be good enough to keep the covenant. They needed the God who would keep the covenant on both sides of it. So I think when they weep and they make sacrifices to Jehovah, I think that's a true act of faith where they realize we've blown it. And it's only because God is faithful that we could exist. So I think we can look to Christ and be honest about ourselves and our weaknesses.
You ready to pray? God, we know that we do have works to do, good works that you've called us to do. You have saved us by Your grace, not by our works. But Father, You have saved us to do good works. So Lord, we pray that we would cling to Jesus. And because of loving Jesus and being in Jesus, we would then do good works for Your glory.
Please help us, Lord. Please teach us to walk in Your ways. Father, we pray that You would please Lord, we're no better than these people. So please help us to live by your spirit. In Jesus's name.
