Joshua 10:16-27

Alrighty, well, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we are going to be at a public execution. People are going to die today. Yep, yep, it's it's kind of a difficult topic to work through. So let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. I get first drinks. You know what happened last time I had Daniel in here? What? He drank all my coffee. Let me get a drink first. Let me get a drink first. Let me get a drink first. Just a little sip.
Okay, that's enough. No, no, no. You're trying to, you're trying to be silly like your brother. Let's pray. God, we thank you so much for this day. Lord, please help us to understand your word. Please apply it to our hearts. Teach us who you are in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. No, no, no, no more coffee. All right. So we are at Joshua chapter 10. Nathan took my glasses last time. Daddy had a hard time reading. Okay. Joshua chapter 10, verse 16.
But these five kings had fled and hid themselves in a cave at Makeda. And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makeda. So Joshua said, Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men to guard it.
And do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies and attack their rear guard. Do not allow them to enter their cities, for the Lord has delivered them into your hand. Then it happened while Joshua and the children of Israel made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they had finished that those who escaped entered fortified cities, and all the people returned to the camp, to Joshua at Makeda in peace. No one moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
Then Joshua said, open the mouth of the cave and bring out those five kings to me from the cave. So they did, and brought out those five kings to him from the cave. The king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Egalon. So it was when they brought out those kings to Judah, to Joshua, that joshua called for all the men of israel and said to the captains of the men of war who were with him come near put your feet on the neck of those kings and they drew near and put their feet on their necks then joshua said to them do not be afraid nor be dismayed be strong and of good courage for thus says the lord For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.'
And afterwards Joshua struck them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees, and they were hanging on the trees until evening. So it was at the time of the going down of the sun that Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and cast them into the cave where they had been hidden. and laid large stones against the cave's mouth, which remain until this very day." What a story. We need to ask ourselves, A, what's this about? B, what's the best version? C, what do we call it to do? What was this about? So, where are they right now?
So they are fighting against five different kings who had attacked their ally. Their ally was Gibeon. And so these five kings had been afraid of Joshua and the Israelites. And so they say, we're going to go attack their friend Gibeon. And so Gibeon calls Joshua and Israel and they say, please help us, they're going to attack us and kill us. And they win. And what did the five kings do who had gone to fight? They hid in the cave. And so what does Joshua say about those five kings in the cave? Um, come out. Well, first he says, he says, guard them in the cave, right? Don't let, don't, don't let them get out, but go and attack all the other people who are running. And then when that whole battle is done, then finally they come back and Joshua brings them out.
And what's he do? He say, don't be done down next time. Yeah, he puts his foot on their necks. Yeah, so they're laying down on the ground on a rock probably, and he puts their foot on their neck and he says, do not be afraid. And then what do they do? They put their foot, their own foot on the person's neck. And what do they do to that person? Yeah. And what do they do? They killed them. Why would they kill those kings? Yeah, that's right. That's right. They tried to go to war with them.
And this is a hard thing, isn't it? What I ever tell you, Ellie, I think what you should do after reading this story is to go stand on somebody's neck and put a sword in their belly. Yeah, no, no, no, no, right? But this is one of those hard things about war is people die in war, right?
And one of the things that's going on here is not because Joshua is good enough or Israel is good enough or they're more powerful or something like that, but it's because God in this way is judging those people for their sins. So he's judging, so he's judging them for their sins. Okay. I distracted you. He's judging them for their sins, right? And so Allie, please don't do that anymore. Thank you. So do you think God will judge anyone else for their sins? No. Oh yeah. Well yeah, do you know what the book of Revelation says about Jesus? What? It says he's going to come and he's going to have a robe on his thigh. It's going to be written, King of kings and Lord of lords and coming out of his mouth is a sharp two edged sword and his robe is dipped in blood.
Blood? Blood. Blood? Yeah, because he's going to judge the living and the dead. He's going to subdue all peoples under his feet is what Psalm 2 says. So he's got blood on his feet? Yeah. Jesus is going to be the victorious king. So he's like Hades and everybody combined? Well, no, that's Greek mythology. That's not what this is like. Okay. Yeah. No, Jesus is going to come back and he is going to win the battle. Some people don't like to think of Jesus that way, but that's what Revelation says about Jesus. That's what he's like. Then why is Daniel's drone right in your office? What was that? Why is Daniel's drone right in your office? Why is Daniel's drone in my office? Because he likes to charge it in here. But that's not what we're talking about. Okay.
So I think we can write Joshua Joshua is a type of Jesus. Do you know what Jesus' name would be in Hebrew? God. Yeshua. Do you know what Joshua's name is in Hebrew? No. Yeshua. Yehoshua. Yep, so they're both, they got the same name because Joshua, this Joshua is a type of Jesus. Yeah, he's like Jesus. He corresponds to him. All right, let's go ahead and pray. Corresponds. He's similar to, parallel with, something like that. All right, let's go ahead and pray. No, no more coffee. Let's pray.
God, we thank you so much that you indeed made promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give them the land. And when the kings fought against that promise, you judged them. Lord, we thank you that we have our Joshua, and that he has made promises in his new covenant, and he is our warrior king who will make it come to pass. And so, Father, we trust him.
