John 1:1-5

okay hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this sunday morning november 8th that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekdays or on the weekends well when we get a spare moment to get into it you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well my dad's in town and so we are going to jump into god's word we get to start the book of john today so you have made it through matthew mark and luke now we're at the last gospel so why don't we go ahead and have some coffee and we'll pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word we pray that as we read your word that we would see who you are that we would believe who you are and that you might draw us to yourself in jesus name amen amen all right john chapter one one through five you got it sure you bet the deity of christ in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god he was in the beginning with god all of these things were made through him and without him nothing was made that was made in him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it all right so we have the uh prologue or the beginning of john's gospel and it starts off with uh in the beginning was the was the word was the word was the word right what do you think the word is referring to there oh god yep yep specifically this is going to be talking about jesus christ and as we go through this whole first chapter we're going to see more and more the association that that is jesus christ and so uh i'm going to just we always do a b and c a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section see what what are we supposed to do in responses what's our calling in response to it so if you just had one sentence to summarize this what would you give one sentence what this is about uh christ is god all right christ is god perfect a plus theologically correct good all right so that was great yeah uh so the word and the word was god he was in the beginning with god and so we we see that there's there's already this this reality that hold on yeah it's the trinity right here right and then something i never kind of thought about before was what verse verse 3 and 5 say right i mean that it was jesus it was the father obviously who's who's creating the world but in genesis it's it's jesus as well and the book of hebrews chapter one goes about this as well i i don't think i was i don't think it was until i was about 23 or 24 that i had you know even though being raised in the church didn't realize that it was jesus christ that i was doing this creation and so what do you think is the best verse that you would summarize if you you know the best verse that kind of gets at the heart of this passage what would you highlight well i think it's first it's first three because it specifically talks about not that jesus christ is part of the trinity because it clearly doesn't talk about the trinity doesn't talk about um the holy spirit this talks about the deity of christ and talks about um that all the work that came through the trinity came through christ so i think i think uh verse number three okay yeah so so there's you're right that there this spirit's not mentioned here but uh but yeah so that this is this is a work through the sun and it's so i i think if we go elsewhere there are you know this is the work of the of the trinity that goes through here but you're right here it's specifically pointing out to jesus's role in creation that's good um i'm i'm going to also highlight verse 4 that's kind of cheating you know you're only supposed to do one verse but that's okay in him was life and the life was the light of men i think that's a big theme that's going to go on through the book of john but uh last thing we have to do is just a little bit more personal is a c calling how do you think god is calling you to respond to these words well since it's the beginning of john i would say for me um it is to remember um that christ is lord and that for everything that i do in my life that everything has to be has to know that he's there that this is about my relationship with him because he is the path to the father and so just that recognition just that re-ordination or that rebirth of for for me as a christian when i read this is to remind me that his focus was on creating us and our focus is to respond all right yeah so jesus yeah i think you're right jesus is a light of men right but the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it yeah it still doesn't yeah the world still doesn't comprehend it right yeah but uh yes what what do you think how would you apply this to your life i think you're spot on dad that this is specifically calling us to remember the person and the work of jesus christ and that he is the light of the world that it's it's through him as you said it's the way you know jesus jesus is the way the truth and life right we come to the father through him and so yeah amen well why don't we go ahead and pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the rich blessing it is to get to read your word and to hear of the eternal realities of life of who you are father we pray that you would let us believe it and that we would live it in our lives in jesus name amen amen well may god bless you tonight and may you go about with grace and peace and
