Scripture Passage
“Even the stork in the heavens
Knows her appointed times;
And the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow
Observe the time of their coming.
But My people do not know the judgment of the Lord.
8 “How can you say, ‘We are wise,
And the law of the Lord is with us’?
Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood.
9 The wise men are ashamed,
They are dismayed and taken.
Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord;
So what wisdom do they have?
10 Therefore I will give their wives to others,
And their fields to those who will inherit them;
Because from the least even to the greatest
Everyone is given to covetousness;
From the prophet even to the priest
Everyone deals falsely.
11 For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly,
Saying, ‘Peace, peace!’
When there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No! They were not at all ashamed,
Nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
In the time of their punishment
They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.
13 “I will surely consume them,” says the Lord.
“No grapes shall be on the vine,
Nor figs on the fig tree,
And the leaf shall fade;
And the things I have given them shall pass away from them.” ’ ”
14 “Why do we sit still?
Assemble yourselves,
And let us enter the fortified cities,
And let us be silent there.
For the Lord our God has put us to silence
And given us water of gall to drink,
Because we have sinned against the Lord.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jeremiah 8:7-14.

Good morning. Good morning. Morning. Welcome to Try the end. Good morning. Good morning. Morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning. We are going to keep going on in Jeremiah Chapter 8 and I got a special guest with me today. He's all grown up. He's turning into a man. I think I see a beard coming in Yep, this you may not recognize him, but this is my son Daniel He's now 10 years old Today's his birthday, so we're going to talk about false teachers and we're going to get into God's Word and hang out, spend some time together. Sound good?
Have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Do you want some coffee? I'll just drink out of Allie's unicorn cup. You're going to drink something out of Allie's unicorn cup? I don't think so. Oh, Daniel left my door open. Give me one second. Why don't you start reading right there while I close the door.
All over you shall say to them, and thus says the Lord, will they fall and not rise? Will one turn away and not return? And so, moreover, thus you shall say to them, so this is the Lord speaking, right? All right, so yeah. Will they fall and not arise? Will they turn and not return?
Why has this people slidden back? Jerusalem in a perpetual backsliding. They hold fast to the seat. They refuse to return. I listened and heard, but they did not speak or write. No man repented of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? Everyone has turned to his own course, as a horse rushes into battle." What's the Lord, what do you think the Lord's saying there? Some have pawned, some have just pushed head on to sin. Yeah, right. Good.
Even the stork in the heavens knows her appointed times. And the turtle dove, the swift and the swallow observe the time of their coming. But my people do not know the judgment of the Lord. Did the birds know when to come? When it's wintertime here, do we know that the bald eagle will show up? He might. Yeah, when it gets cold, the bald eagles show up. When it's certain times of the year, do we know that the falcons show up and the hawks? Those in summer, the hawks. Yeah, right. We know that there's certain birds that show up in our area at certain times. But yet, God's people, what does He say about them? They don't know the judgment day. Yeah, they don't know the judgment day.
Well, how can you say, we are wise and the law of the Lord is with us? Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood. The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom do they have? Therefore, I will give their wives to others and their fields to those who inherit them, because from the least even to the greatest, everyone is given to covetousness. From the prophet, even to the priest, everyone deals falsely. For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace. And there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall. In the time of their punishment they shall be cast down, says the Lord." What's he saying in that paragraph? They will be cast down. Yes. Destroyed. Yeah, because they're saying peace when there is no peace. They're full of covetousness. right, that they're speaking lies. I will surely consume them, says the Lord. No grape shall be on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade, and the things I have given them shall pass away from them. What's that saying? Yeah.
Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves, and let us enter the fortified cities, and let us be silent there. For the Lord our God has put us to deep silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord. What's Jeremiah saying there?
Because they have sinned against the Lord, they will be punished. Well, yeah, but not just that they're going to be punished, right? But you might as well just go to the fortresses and stay there. Don't be out in the fields, don't be in your homes, but get to the city, get to the fortresses and lament to the Lord there, because judgment is coming.
We looked for peace, but no good came. And for a time of health, but there was trouble. The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan. The whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of strong ones. For they have come and devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it." What do you think that's talking about? Some devour even the people in the city and devour the city.
Yeah. Yeah, right. All the way from up in like this, the name of horses, right? That's where up in Dan, right? That's where they, how the Assyrians came in from north to south. Yeah. Well, not just a stampede, but like the stomping of horses hooves as they were destroying the city. Yeah.
For behold, I will send serpents among you of vipers, which cannot be charmed and they shall bite you says the Lord. I wouldn't want to get bit by a viper. I wouldn't want to get bit by a viper either. What do you think this whole section is talking about?
That they're going to get punished. Yeah, they're going to get punished. Why are they getting punished? Because they didn't obey the law. Yeah, they didn't follow him. Why didn't they follow him? They thought, oh, it's fine. We can just stay on our evil ways. So they love themselves and their evil ways more than the Lord? Yeah, right. Interestingly, their covetousness is marked by their not loving the Lord. So sometimes we don't think of covetousness as a big sin, but it is a big sin, isn't it? Yeah.
Well, what do you think if there's one section that you remember or one verse that you would underline, what would it be as the best verse to summarize this section? Maybe about the horses or the vipers or something else. The hostess. You think the horses? Do you think you would underline something like verse 16, the snorting of his horses was heard from Dan? Yeah. Yeah, in my Bible, I have verse 8 and 10 underlined. But what would you underline? Maybe you would underline something different in your Bible.
But last, let's go to seek calling. What are we called to do? How does this lead us to Jesus Christ? He warns us not to sin. Yeah. Yeah, right. Jesus tells us not to sin, right? Yeah. God had told them not to sin, so what's the difference between us and them? Jesus died for us. Okay. Is there anything else? Jesus died for us. You're absolutely right. He died for our sins. And we have the Bible. Well, they have the Bible too. They had the Old Testament. Do we have more of the Bible? Yeah. Absolutely. Do we have His Spirit in us? Yeah. Yeah, do we have His life in us? Yeah. Yeah, so we don't need to fear condemnation, because that's been taken in Jesus.
But what did Jesus say? If you love me, keep my commandments. And Jesus' commandments can be boiled down to the two greatest commandments, right? You shall love the Lord your God. with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul, and with all your strength, and the second is like it, you shall... Treat your neighbor as yourself. Well, love your neighbor as you would love yourself, yeah, right?
And so, can we abide in Jesus and bear good fruit? Yep. Yeah. There's no condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus, because we follow after His ways now, don't we? Yeah, so when we find covetousness in our hearts, what do we do about it? Yeah, we repent. We put it to death, don't we? Don't play with it. But because of Jesus, we hate our sin and we turn from it into life.
Hey, you ready to pray? Would you like to pray for us on your birthday? Sure. Okay, go ahead. God, please help that we have a good day, please help that we learn something from this, and please help that we can take it into our own lives. Amen. Amen. Well, may the Lord bless you. May you walk in the joy of Jesus Christ, knowing that in Him there is no condemnation for us who are in Christ Jesus. We'll see you next time. Bye.
