Jeremiah 33

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're at Jeremiah chapter 33. Man, it's an awesome chapter full of hope, all about God's restoration of Israel after the captivity. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your Word. We pray that as we read your Word, your Holy Spirit would please help us to understand it, Father, we pray that you would pour out your Holy Spirit on our hearts, that it would not just be filling our minds with a bunch of Bible knowledge, but that you would be softening and lighting our hearts on fire, that we might have this Word applied to us, fill us with hope, and teach us how to live. In Jesus' name we pray.
Amen. Here we go. Jeremiah chapter 33. I'm going to read a paragraph, talk, read, talk, read, talk. So we're just kind of doing our A. What's this about? As we go afterwards, we'll overall summarize it. Then we'll do B. Best calling C. What are we called to do? Here we go.
Moreover, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still shut up in the court of prison, saying, Thus says the Lord who made it, the Lord who formed it and established it. The Lord is his name. Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know." This sets the scene right. Jeremiah is in prison in the courtyard of the king. And the Lord says, call on my name. The Lord, L-O-R-D, if you've got your physical Bible in front of you, that's all capitals, capital L, capital O, capital R, capital D, that's Yehovah or Yahweh, Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, this divine name of God.
He says he's gonna show him great and mighty things, call on him. So verse 4, for thus says the Lord the God of Israel concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah which have been pulled down to fortify against the siege mounds and the sword.
They come to fight with the Chaudians, but only to fill their palaces with the dead bodies of men whom I will slay in my anger and my fury, all for whose wickedness I have hidden my face from the city. Behold, I will bring it health and healing. I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth. And I will cause the captives of Judah and the captives of Israel to return and will rebuild those places as at the first. I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned and by which they have transgressed against me. Then it shall be to me a name of joy a praise, and an honor before all nations of the earth, who shall hear all the good that I do to them.
They shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and all the prosperity that I provide for it." Thus says the Lord. Again, there shall be heard in this place of which you say, it is desolate, without a man and without beast. In the cities of Judah, the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast, the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of bridegroom and the voice of bride, the voice of those who say, praise the Lord of hosts, for the Lord is good, for his mercy endures forever. and of those who will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord, for I will cause the captives of the land to return as at the first," says the Lord.
God says, hey, I'm bringing the siege mounds. They're trying to fortify the walls, tearing down their own palaces, trying to keep the Babylonians out. But I've given this city over to the Chaldeans. They're going to take it because of the Israelites' sin. But I'm going to bring them back someday.
And joy will return. Thus says the Lord of hosts, in this place which is desolate, without man and without beast, and in all its cities, there shall again be a dwelling place of shepherds, causing their flocks to lie down. in the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, in the cities of the south, in the cities or in the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, the flocks shall again pass under the hands of him who counts them, says the Lord." What is this part? This is saying that God is watching over the cities and He's going to bring people back into them. He's going to fill the fields once again with the flocks of the people.
Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days and at that time, I will cause to grow up to David a branch of righteousness He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell safely. And this is the name by which she shall be called, the Lord our righteousness.
What's this part talking about? Going back to that messianic promise, God had not forgotten his promise to David, 2 Samuel chapter 7, right? There would be one who would sit upon David's throne forever. He said he hadn't forgotten about it. And this man, the one that's going to sit on his throne, what's he called?
The Lord our righteousness. I'm not gonna hide it, right? We'll just go ahead and jump to seek calling and how does this point us to Jesus Christ? This is Jesus. The one who was tempted in every way as we are yet without sin. The one who was perfect in every way. The son of David. Emmanuel, God with us. Yeshua, God saves us from our sins. God remembered his promises. Jeremiah was looking forward to it.
God was saying Jerusalem's gonna come again, but see, Jesus was gonna come and bring an even better kingdom. He'd be a better king and a better kingdom. Verse 19, and the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah saying, thus says the Lord, If you break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that there will not be day and night in their season, then my covenant may also be broken with David my servant, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and with the Levites the priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea be measured, so will I multiply the descendants of David, my servant, and the Levites who minister before me."
God says to Jeremiah, go ahead, try to break my covenant with the sun or the moon. You know, that sun that rises every morning? The moon that's always there and it cycles? Try to break it, and if you can, then you can break my covenant with David. He talks about the seed of David that's going to multiply.
Again, we read as Christians the Old Testament in light of what the New Testament says. And in Galatians chapter 4, we know that He has poured out His spirit into our hearts, the spirit of adoption that cries out, Abba, Father. And we know that we have been made His children. And that this Lord of righteousness, Jesus Christ, has called us by name, sealed us for the day of redemption. And so we know that we are included in this, that there are now millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of people who have been brought into the family of God by adoption, made children of David. God has done this.
And what about this whole thing with the Levites? Well, Jesus wasn't of the tribe of Levi, right? But this is the whole idea of priesthood. And what does the New Testament call us? a royal priesthood, a holy nation, every single one of us, priests, offering up our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable God, which is our reasonable service, offering up the sacrifice of praise of our lips. We get this blessing. God is good, guys. He's kept his promises.
Moreover, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, Have you not considered what these people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lord has chosen, He has also cast them off. Thus they have despised My people, as if they should no more be a nation before them. Thus says the Lord, if my covenant is not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinance of heaven and earth, then I will cast away the descendants of Jacob and David, my servant. So I will not take any of his descendants to be rulers over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for I will cause their captives to return and will have mercy on them."
People are saying, God and forsaken us. God's nowhere around, right? And God says, I'm right here in the mess of life and the dirtiness of everything. Sorry. And the dirtiness of everything that's going on, and that captivity by the Babylonians, right?
This is God who is right there. It is God who's doing these things. And so in our lives, too. Trust in Him. Even in the dark times, He has a plan. He knows what He's doing. And He loves us. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much. For the blessing it is, and we know you care for us. You love us, you watch over us. Father, please give us faith, even in the dark days, to follow after you. You are our king, our God, and the one who always keeps his covenant promises. Help us, Lord. Even in our disbelief, help us believe. Thank you for your love and your kindness towards us. In Jesus's name, amen. May God bless you, and may you walk in the joy and peace of Jesus.
