Jeremiah 32:1-15

Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions, although we're both drinking tea this morning. Why don't we have some tea? We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. We thank you that you have given us time together to read your word together. and we pray that we would love you and bring you glory in all things in Jesus' name. Amen.
We are at Joshua, Jeremiah, not Joshua, Jeremiah 32. We're gonna read the first 15 verses. You ready? The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the 10th year of Zedekiah, king of Judah, which was the 18th year of Nebuchadnezzar. for then the king, oh, go ahead and sit down. We have to get my Bible. We'll just use my Bible for today, okay, because we've already started.
Which was the 18th year of Nebuchadnezzar, for the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet. Had. Nope, go right ahead. Was. I don't know. Shut. Yep, was shut. up in the court of the prison. Prison? He was shut up in the court of the prison.
Why? Because he was a prophet and the king hated him. which was in the king of Judah's house. For Zedekiah, king of Judah, had shut him up, saying, Why do you prophesy and say, Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it. And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face, and see him eye to eye. Then he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall be until I visit him, says the Lord.
Though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed. So why do you throw him into prison? Because Jeremiah was saying, even if you fight against the Babylonians, you're going to lose. Nebuchadnezzar is going to win. And do you think the king of Judah likes that? Zedekiah? No. So he throws him in prison. Why? Because he doesn't like it. He doesn't like that message. Why do you say that type of junk?
Well, what's Jeremiah saying? Yeah, well let's hear what Jeremiah said. And Jeremiah said, Then Hanamel, my uncle's son, came to me in the court of the prison, according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, Please buy my field, which is in Anatoth, which is in the country of Benjamin, for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours. Buy it for yourself. Hey, why don't you sit down here, please? Yeah, you don't need to drink that like you're a doggie or something. Just pick up your cup and drink it, okay? I drink it with my teeth. Okay.
So he wants to... God says, hey, your uncle's going to come and he's going to tell you to buy a piece. He's going to ask you to buy a piece of land. And guess what happens? What? His uncle comes and he wants to sell him a piece of land. But King of Babylon's about to conquer the land. Hmm, that's odd.
Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. So I bought the field from Hanumel, the son of my uncle, who was in Anathoth, and weighed out to him the money, 17 shekels of silver. And I signed the deed and sealed it, took witnesses, and weighed the money on the scales. So I took the purchase deed, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open, and I gave the purchase deed to Baruch, the son of Nariah, the son of Messiah, in the presence of Hanumel, my uncle's son, and in the presence of the witnesses who signed the purchase deed before all the Jews who sat in the court of the prison." So apparently Zedekiah had other people in prison too.
And so he does all the stuff. He says, OK, well, this must be the word of the Lord because my uncle came. He wants to sell me the land. So he does all the legal stuff to buy the field. Wow. Yep. Then I charged Baruch before them, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of heaven, Take these deeds, both this purchased deed which is sealed and this deed which is opened, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last many days. For thus says the Lord God of Israel.
Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land So I did all the paperwork that did all the paperwork to to buy the land and then guess what he says Take all the paperwork put in a special jar because in a bunch of time guess what's gonna happen.
Oh even though people go into exile. No, even though people are going to go into exile, King Nebuchadnezzar is going to wipe people out and take them to exile. He says, someday, someday houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land. He knows that the exile is only a small time, 70 years, and they'll come back.
What do we know? Because the Lord Didn't have him buy a piece of land if it was worth nothing. It was going to be worth something again someday. And so he trusts God. Yeah. Sometimes, is it hard to trust God? Because it's like, I don't see how this is a good thing. But yet, we know it is because he said it. And so, sometimes is it hard to trust and just do what God says?
Yeah, really. He even tells you to love your brother. You may think sometimes, oh, I have to love that stinky breath monster man. Don't play with that. And you might even think it's really hard to love my brother. But does that mean it's a bad thing?
Yeah, or maybe what about this Bless those who persecute you Yeah, Jesus said bless them who persecute you bless and do not curse love your enemies Whoa That's kind of hard to do, huh That's the same as love your neighbor as yourself. Yeah, but Jesus says even if they're your enemies, love them. Sure. And obey your parents. Yes. Oh, it's always easy to obey mom and dad, though. No. Sometimes you think, I don't know why God's telling me to obey them. No. You just do it all the time, perfectly. No. No, but the point is, Jeremiah trusted God.
God had said he would bring back the people, and then he gives them a sign. Go buy this land. Make it official. Show that you trust me. And then they buy the land and he's in prison and they don't let him. He's in prison, yet he knows someday that field's gonna be in his family still. So, can we trust God when he tells us things are gonna happen in the future?
Yeah. Yeah, right? That's what Jesus told his disciples about heaven. Yeah. It's good for me to go, right? I need to go to my father to prepare a room for you in his house. And the disciples didn't like that. They didn't understand it. Let's get your hand out of your mouth. But Jesus told them that they were going to go be with Jesus in his father's house.
And so they need to trust him. Mm-hmm. Can we trust him? Yeah. Yeah. You ready to pray? Okay, let's pray. God, we thank you for giving us this picture of Jeremiah buying the piece of land. Even though it may have seemed like a bad money move, there's an army waiting to destroy the city. And yet, he trusted you, knowing that you would bring the people back and make the land valuable. And Father, we pray that we would live our lives that way, trusting in your promises and walking in your ways. We pray these things in Jesus's name. Amen.
