Jeremiah 17:14-18

Hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions. We're gonna ask about Jeremiah and how does he become comforted and Reassured of what God's gonna do. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word Let's pray father we thank you so much for your word It is perfect and true wonderful and lovely altogether And God, we pray that you would please strengthen us by it. Comfort us, even in the hard days. Help us, Lord, to learn like Jeremiah, and to walk in your ways. In Jesus' name, amen. Here we go, Jeremiah chapter 17, just a few verses this morning. Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed. Save me, and I shall be saved. For you are my praise. Indeed, they say to me, where is the word of the Lord?
Let it come now. As for me, I have not hurried away from being a shepherd who follows you, nor have I desired the woeful day. You know that what came out of my lips, it was right there before you. Do not be a terror to me. You are my hope in the day of doom.
Let them be ashamed who persecute me, but do not let me be put to shame. let them be dismayed but do not let me be dismayed bring on them the day of doom and destroy them with double destruction well it's kind of hard part but an interesting part a what's this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what do we call to do so jeremiah and all of this god's been saying judgment's gonna come judgment's gonna come he's been telling jeremiah he's that mouthpiece telling people that judgment is going to come.
It's not been a popular message. Even his own townspeople are conspiring against him. The men of Anatothus, right? They want to destroy him for what he's saying. We've really seen Jeremiah wrestling with that as he goes and here it's interesting. We hear Jeremiah's heart, Jeremiah's verse here.
This is his prayer to God. He asked God to heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed. Save me and I shall be saved for you are my praise. He looks to God now in all the midst of this forecasting of a prophecy that Jerusalem is going to be destroyed and horrible things are going to happen. He finds comfort with God. And so even people are saying to them, where's the word of the Lord? Let it come now, right? The armies haven't come, you idiot. But it's interesting, by this point, he realizes he's a shepherd.
He just needs to follow the Lord's will. He just needs to say what the Lord has him to say. But he says, do not be a terror to me. You are my hope in the day of doom. He knows that destruction is going to come. He knows that God's words are true. Even though it seems like to the people they're delayed, to Jeremiah he knows they're not going to be delayed much longer. And he trusts God. He trusts the Lord and his heart is comforted.
And so he prays against God's enemies. This is an imprecatory prayer in verse 18. He's praying against them. And he's hoping in the Lord that the Lord would turn them. And so, he's comforted by God. This whole section is about him being comforted by the Lord, by God being his help, by God being his safety, by God being his refuge, and then also knowing that he's going to be able to go to the Lord. And the doom's going to come on those who are against God.
So that's what this is about. I have verses 14 and 17 underlined in my Bible as the best verses to summarize. So let's see, calling. What are we called to do? We don't need to be in terror of the day of judgment, but we can look forward to giving our account with joy at that last great day, knowing that God hears us, cares for us, and loves us.
And so we could go to the Lord. We could trust Him. Even though there may be those who would persecute us and hate us or vile us and say all sorts of evil things against us, even though they may want to drag people into the courtrooms and drag people before magistrates and governors, we need not worry. For we know the Lord is our shepherd. Even in the day of doom and disaster, He will care for us. And even though we may die, For us to live is Christ, but to die is gain. We can trust Him even in life and death.
Let's pray. Father, we thank You so much for this day. Father, we pray that You would please help us even in that day of doom, the day of judgment. Even in the hard days of this life, Lord, we pray that we would know that you are our strength, that you care for us, that you are our redeemer, our rescuer, our fortress, our strong tower. And Lord, if you are with us, who could possibly be against us? Thank you for the hope that we have in you, in Jesus' name. Amen. May God bless you.
