Scripture Passage

Greatness of the New Priest

20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath 21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:

“The Lord has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest [a]forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ ”),

22 by so much more Jesus has become a [b]surety of a better covenant.

23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save [c]to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, [d]harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.

hey hey good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we're at Hebrews chap 7: 18- 28 or 20 through 28 sorry 20 through 28 man this is an amazing and exciting passage all about what does it mean for Jesus to be our high priest and it is crazy good we're going to have some coffee we're going to get into this I'm going to be speaking quick because I want to try to not go on forever but man is it good so to get all that goodness in we're going to have to move fast let's have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into God's word let's pray father you have given us amazing gold this morning truth that is sweeter than honey we pray God that you would please help us or help us to understand it but Lord we pray that it would move us move us towards love and move us towards trust and move us towards hope only your spirit can do this please help us Lord we pray in Jesus's name amen here you go Hebrews 7 verse 20- 28 and in as much as he was not made high priest without an oath for they have become High priests without an oath but he by an oath with an oath by him who said to him the Lord has sworn and will not relent you are a priest forever according to the order of melkisedek verse 22 by so much more Jesus has become a shity of a better Covenant also there were many priests because they were prevented by Death from continuing but he because he continues forever has an unchangeable priesthood therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through him since he always lives to make intercession for them such a high priest was fitting for us who is holy harmless undefiled separate from Sinners and has become higher than the heavens who does not need daily as those High priests to offer up sacrifices first for his own sins and then for the peoples for he for this he did once for all when he offered up himself for the law appoints as high priests men who have weaknesses the word of the oath which came after the law appointed the son who has been perfected forever man what an amazing passage we need to ask ourselves a what is this about B what's the best vers to summarize us and C what are we called to do in response to this so what is this about this is all about Jesus in his high priesthood compared to the Old Testament ironic priesthood so uh there's some comparing and contrasting here so the first thing is that this comparing between Jesus's priesthood and the Order of meis and those of the ironic priesthood Jesus's priesthood was sworn by an oath Psalm 110 he says and the Lord has sworn and will not relent you are a priest forever according to the order of mechis so Jesus has a priesthood that was sworn by the father promised to never end the ironic priesthood never had that and so it says that he has become the shity of a better Covenant right there's a better agreement there's a new covenant and this New Covenant in Jesus's blood remember what he said at the Lord's table right when he had that final meal with his disciples this is the blood of the Covenant of the New Covenant which is in my blood Jesus is saying he is the shity he is the down payment he is the guarantee he gave his life but he laid it down that he might pick it up again because this was the father's will and this is where it ties in again notice also there were many priests because they were prevented by Death from continuing right you had priest you had Aaron and then you have his two sons and well he has four Sons two of whom who who defile the altar with their profane fire the Lord kills them and so you have Eleazar and his brother they become priests and then it goes on and on and on and on and on but every priest of the iranic family dies every single one of them they can't continue on they can't guarantee that their priesthood is going to bring God's favor towards them but notice therefore but verse 24 but he because he continues forever because Jesus was raised again from the dead and lives and ascended up into heaven Jesus because of his eternal life is able to save us to the uttermost he has an unchangeable priesthood therefore verse 25 he is also able to save to the uttermost who come to God through him since he always lives to make intercession for them why is Jesus in heaven Jesus is there making continual intercession for his people it is Jesus who's the high priest Jesus Jesus is the priest it's it's just Jesus Jesus alone right this is a very very important thing to get at it is Jesus we look to it's Jesus's sacrifice Jesus laying down his life Jesus who is our priest it's him who is our mediator he's the shy of the Covenant he's the hope we have no priest here on Earth No sacrifice here on Earth our sacrifice was done once for all finished and our high priest intercedes for us continually in heaven in his everlasting life with a priesthood that was based on a vow an oath that the Lord himself made and so talking about Jesus verse 26 for such a high priest was fitting for us and what does it say that Jesus is he is Holy he is harmless he's undefiled he's separate from Sinners Jesus as our high priest has become higher than the heavens do you hear the what this is saying right nothing can spoil or spot or ruin Jesus's sacrifice and Ministry know he is perfect right because Jesus verse 27 who does not need daily as those High priests right the Aaron and his sons to offer up sacrifices first for his own sins and then for his peoples right Jesus didn't need to sacrifice himself for his own sins no he was perfect holy spotless without blemish separate from Sinners tested in every way as we are yet without sin and so he has a better sacrifice than Aaron and his sons and he verse 27 the very end of it for this he did once for all when he offered up himself he is the Lamb of God who came to take away the sins of the world this is why the angels in heaven stand around his throne and rejoice Worthy is a lamb who was slain for the laws appointment as high priests men who have weakness but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints the son who has been perfected forever Jesus and his high priesthood is way better than everything we learned in the first five books of the Bible as we spent almost two years looking through all of the pentat and we we wrestled with the various Commandments and we looked at the beautiful things that were going on in the Tabernacle and how God had designed their robes and made their priesthood all of this was meant to point to Jesus who has a much better priesthood and a better sacrifice and eternal life and he will reign forever as our high priest making intercession for us with his once for all perfect sacrifice and so we look to and we trust in Jesus alone that's what this is about it's about Jesus Jesus having a better priesthood Jesus being better than any priest Jesus having a better sacrifice than any priest could ever make and Jesus being Our Hope forever what's the best verse to summarize this well I man I got a ton underlined in my Bible Well I have verse 20 underlined and but then I have sworn double underlined and will not relent double underlined forever underlined I have verse 25 underlined and part of verse 26 and part of verse 27 and part of verse 28 I don't know this is a hard one for me what verse would you underline as the best verse to summarize in your Bible what we called to do hope in Jesus Christ that is what we are called to do trust in his sacrifice alone it's Jesus who alone our high priest this is one of the amazing things about Christianity we do not need any other priest in this life because we look to Jesus alone who is our high priest we look to the one who has an everlasting priesthood and everlasting life who is spot less and without sin this is the Jesus we serve this is the god whom we love this is the one who has a Ministry better than any Angel because he is our high priest in the order of melkisedek God has sworn it and it is so and so trust in Jesus who is Holy and unchangeable remarkable in every way the of our devotion man there a lot of Hope what a great God we have what a wonderful sacrifice let's pray Lord it's hard it's hard to keep back the joy and the excitement as we think about this passage Lord you have blessed us with an eternal blessing that you have given us Jesus Christ and in his blood the price for sin and death has been paid perfectly finally completely because you have sworn to him by oath that he will be a priest forever in the order of mekis Lord we thank you for Jesus Lord please give us hope and Assurance strength and comfort in our lord Jesus in his name we pray amen well may the Lord bless you may may you rest in Jesus may you trust in him and his finished sacrifice and I'll see you next time bye
