Hebrews 3:1-6

Hey, hey, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We're at Hebrews chapter 3 verses 1 through 6 more about Jesus as our high priest and also stuff about us, too Let's have some coffee. We'll pray we'll get into God's Word Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for who you are. And we thank you for your word. God, it's a blessing to be able to spend time together, to be in your word and to hear from you. Please help us. Please, Lord, help us to understand your word. Please teach us your ways. Let us walk before you in humility. Lord, we pray that we would have a joy that would last forever in Jesus' name, amen. All right, Hebrews 3, verses 1 through 6.
Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the apostle and high priest of our confession, Jesus Christ, who was faithful to him who appointed him, as Moses also was faithful in all his house, for this one has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses. And as much as he who built the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but he who built all things is God. And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant for testimony of those things which had been spoken afterward. But Christ, as a son over his own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end." Well, this is an amazing passage and we need to ask ourselves, A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do in response to this? So, A, what's this about?
Well, we are addressed by a few things, and then we're told to consider something or someone, and it's a compare and contrast type section. So let's go ahead and start. By the way, the author of Hebrews loves doing this, comparing and contrasting. We're going to see that a lot here.
So what does God call us or the writer of the Hebrews call us here? Well, notice he calls us holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling. That's how the Lord thinks about us as holy brethren. Again, tie that up to right above, right? We are the brothers of Jesus. So he's not ashamed to call us brothers. He suffered for us. He comes to our aid. He is our propitiation. So we are holy brethren. We're partakers of the heavenly calling, right? He has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. So that's what this is talking about here. But now as we get into verse The second part here of verse one, consider, consider what? The apostle and high priest of our confession. Who is the apostle and high priest of our confession? It's Christ Jesus.
Jesus is the one sent by the father, right? My father has sent me. That's what apostle means, sent one. So he was, the father commissioned the son to go and do his will and the son did it. He's also become our high priest. So notice before it was he's better than the angels, but now it's Jesus compared to someone else. What does it say about Jesus in verse 2? Who was faithful to him who appointed him. So Jesus is faithful to the Father just as Moses was faithful in all of the tabernacle. So It's Jesus and Moses. They're both faithful servants. But verse 3 is going to say Jesus is better than Moses. Because notice verse 3, for this one has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses. Christ Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses. Why?
Well, Moses is the servant of the house, but he's not the builder of the house. The builder of the house was not Moses. It was the father. He might have built the tabernacle. He may have seen the construction of it, but he's not the designer. He's not the architect. And so he gets the glory. not as the builder, but as the servant. But he who built all things is God.
For Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterwards. So these things were looking forward to something later. That's what Moses was, a faithful servant. Words of those things would come about later. But, verse 6, something did come with Jesus.
But Christ as a son over his own house. Okay, so he's the owner of this house. whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. What is this house that Jesus built? Well, Jesus built his own tabernacle, his own temple. Jesus built, what does it say? Is it a house made out of wood and stone, bricks and mortar? No. No, we can we're gonna find out more later as we go through here, but we're gonna we're able to look elsewhere in scripture we're able to see that this is what Jesus has done in first peter when He's the chief cornerstone And he makes us as living stones He builds us into a spiritual house He tabernacles amongst us He sent the apostles and the prophets to be the foundations. And he's building us up as a living spiritual house.
Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses because he has a better house than Moses. Moses's tabernacle is pointing to the temple in heaven. where Jesus is ministering, but also here the spiritual house he's left in the church now with his believers. That's why he's calling us holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling. So Jesus is worthy of more glory than Moses. That's what this is getting at. So what is this about? This is Jesus has more glory than Moses because Jesus has a better house than Moses. He's the builder of his house. So that's what this is about.
What's the best verse to summarize this? Well, I have verse six underlined as my best verse. I could see somebody arguing though that we might want to underline that he's worthy of more glory than Moses. And so the second part of our verse three for one has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses. So, I could see that, that's fine, but I have verse six underlined. You can tell me what underlines something else in the comments if you want.
Let's lastly do seek calling. What are we called to do? How does this show us Jesus Christ? Well, notice that our calling is baked within this. We believe who Jesus is as the one greater than the angels, better than Moses, Notice what he says, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence. And the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. This idea of two things here. One, we need to believe in Jesus Christ, but the two applications that flow from that because of who we are as holy brethren and partakers of the heavenly calling, two things that we're called to do from that, hold fast the confidence. Hold fast to Jesus Christ. Hold fast to your high priest. Hold fast to his finished work. Hold fast to who he is.
And number two, rejoice and the rejoicing of the hope. Do you have a confidence, an assurance of the things hoped for not yet seen? Do you cling fast hold to rejoice in that? Are you? Interestingly here, the New King James translates as rejoicing. This is the idea of taking pride in and so much pride that you actually boast about. Do you boast about the excellencies of Jesus? Do you take pride in the gospel? Not a pride in yourself, but a pride in the Prince of Peace, the Captain of our salvation, Jesus Himself. Do you proclaim the excellencies of His glory? Will you do it until the end?
That's what we're called to do. To rejoice in the hope, to take pride in that hope, to boast in that hope. and to remember to cling fast to Jesus himself, who is our confidence. Let's pray. God, we pray that you indeed would keep us. We pray that you would let us hold fast to the confidence that we have by faith in Jesus. Lord, we pray that we would boast in the hope that we have, that we would not hide it under a bushel, but that we would be a salt and a light. Lord, we pray that you would let us not cower away from our hope. But Lord, we pray that it would seep deep down into our souls and be the bedrock foundation of our very existence.
Renew our joy, Lord, we pray in Jesus's name. Amen. Well, may you rejoice in Jesus today. May you hold fast to the confidence you have that he is able to aid you. He's not ashamed to call you his brethren. That he was sent to save sinners like you and me. See you next time. Bye.
