Hebrews 13:7-17

Well, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions. We're at Hebrews chapter 13. We got a bigger chunk this morning. We're at verses seven through 17. Yeah, seven through 17. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray. And we'll get into God's Word. Okay, are you having the first sip of coffee? Okay, don't drink all of my coffee, please. I know you like to drink a bunch of it. All right. Hey, let me have some. Don't drink all my coffee. OK, let's leave it here. Let's leave it here and let's pray.
God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for time together. We thank you for your word. We pray, Lord, that your spirit would please teach us this morning. Help us to love you more and more. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. OK. You ready to get into God's word? You ready? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Hebrews chapter 13. My binder broke. I got to get this fixed. Okay. Hebrews chapter 13. Here we go.
Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. All right, so let's talk about this part. We're gonna go paragraph by paragraph and ask about what it's about, okay?
So, who should you remember? Well, here it's those who lead you, right? Those who rule over you. Yeah, right, so this is specifically talking, yes, mommy and daddy and grandma, yes, in one real sense, but also very specifically the elders in the church. Well, they may be in the faith. So they lead you. All right, just like daddy leads you, right? They lead you. But do they lead you just with their words? How else do they lead you? With God. Yeah, with God, right? With their life, with their conduct, with how they live.
Right. But ultimately, who is the person who they're trying to follow in whose footsteps? Yeah, Jesus is. That's right. So as they follow in Jesus's footsteps, following their footsteps. Yes, as you see Mr. Smith looking like Jesus, you follow him. Where Mr. Pilling is looking like Jesus, what do you do? I don't know. You follow him. Where Mr. Manring is walking like Jesus, what do you do? Follow him. Where Mr. Turner is walking like Jesus, what do you do? Walk with him.
Yeah, right? Because Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. And so if Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever, do you need to like, do you learn? Oh, don't do that. Do you learn all new stuff all the time? Like, like the elders say, Oh, no, hold on. We don't actually believe that now we believe this. No, no, we don't. You don't go about with all sorts of strange teachings. No, no. OK, so here's the next part. Ready?
We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. So remember how we looked at the tabernacle? Remember where the Ark of the Covenant was? Do you remember all that? You know, you remember the tent, right? So that's where they served, but they don't get to serve, right? In Jesus's tabernacle. I'm sleeping. Okay. Well, I don't need you to sleep. I need you to pay attention here, okay?
For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin are burned up outside the camp. Therefore, Jesus also that he might sanctify the people with his own blood suffered outside the gate. Therefore, let us go forth to him, outside the camp, bearing his reproach.
For we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. Therefore, by him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name. but do not forget to do good and to share for and to share for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. So should we start offering sacrificial animals again? Why not?
Because Jesus, Jesus was a better sacrifice. And once for all. Done! And then how do little cats make little cats? Well, we'll talk about that later. But the point is, is that, uh, right there. Are there, is there any more need for sacrifice of the animals? Like when they used to take the lamb to the, to the temple or to the tabernacle and kill it? No, no, no, no. Right. No. Jesus has done that now. And so we can trust in Jesus.
But what type of sacrifice do we have? If we don't have sacrifice, sacrificing animals, what type of sacrifice do you do? Ready? The sacrifice of praise to God. That is the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Did you know that when you sing psalms at church, it's a sacrifice of praise? No. Yeah. Yeah, that's the type of sacrifice we offer today. And we do good and we share. This is the things I do not like and I wish they were not even alive. Tornado, bees and hornets. Okay. Okay. Ready for the very last part. All right.
Obey those who rule over you and be submissive for they watch over out for your souls as those who must give account Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. So you have elders and I have elders. And what's the elders job? Did you hear what they said here? Well, they lead us in worship. That's true. Now, when three more come, I'm gonna be a zero with one. Yeah, you're gonna be ten. And when you're ten, will you be submissive to the elders? Yeah, right. So we're to submit to them. And is there a way that we can submit that makes their life good?
Like, oh man, I love, I love being Ellie's shepherd. She's, she's so submissive. She, I tell her, this is the way Jesus walked, followed Jesus. And she listens. Is that a good, is that a good sheep following the shepherd? Yes. But what if, how do you think the shepherd feels if they try to tell you about Jesus, they try to encourage you, they try to tell you, this is the way you should go. Here's the path of life. And you keep wanting to stray away, or daddy wants to keep straying away. Is that easy for a shepherd?
No. No, right? And the shepherds, do you know that that's what daddy's called? Yeah, don't scream yeah a shepherd Yeah But guess what I may be a shepherd, but they're not actually my sheep Do you know who this do you know who sheep you are? God's that's right Yeah, yeah daddy's just a hired servant I Right? I don't own any of his people. Jesus bought you. So I'm like a little popsicle and a little garbite and get me? No, not like that. But the point is, right?
Remember how we talked about stewardship when we were doing our Bible lessons? How God gives you something and you need to take care of the thing God trusts you with? Do you remember how we talked about that? We talked a lot about that like remember all the Different guys who were given given money fight by their boss or by the landlord Yeah, and they you had two good stewards and one bad steward Yeah And one put buried that money and the other one spent it That's right. Yeah, the other ones invested it and did good business things with it, right?
So daddy, as a shepherd, as a steward of God's people, I have to, I'm going to be judged. Whether I've led, well none of them are coffee, whether I've led his sheep well or not. So, shepherds have a responsibility and sheep have a responsibility. And each of us are responsible to follow Jesus.
Let's pray. Let's pray. God, thank you so much for the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you that he is the chief shepherd of the sheep. Lord, we pray that we would follow in his footsteps. Thank you that he leads us beside the still waters and to the green pastures. Father, please. Let us not be carried around by any whim of doctrine, by any crazy teaching, Lord, but we pray that we would follow after You. We pray, Lord, that we would trust in Him alone, offering up the sacrifice of praise, the thanks from our lips.
Lord, thank You for those elders who rule over us. Thank You for their faithful care. Lord, I thank You for my elders. Thank You for how they care for even our family. Lord, we pray that you would please watch over us and care for us. Please, Lord, let us follow in your ways. In Jesus's name, amen. All right, may the Lord bless you as you walk after Jesus.
