Hebrews 11:1-3

Well, good morning, Ellie. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning, we're at Hebrews chapter one or chapter 11, one through three. Does that sound good? Yeah. OK, Hebrews 11, one through three. Let's have some coffee, pray and get to God's word. Oh, you see, I think it's not too hot, I think. Yeah, it's too hot for you. OK. Are you ready to pray?
All right, let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing. It is that we can spend together with you. Lord, we pray that you would please help us, help us to understand your word. Teach us, Father, your ways in Jesus name. Amen.
All right. You want to get up tall so you can read so you can see this. This chapter is typically called the Hall of Faith. Right. So in America, you might have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the Sports Hall of Fame, or you might have the Toy Hall of Fame. Right. So this is the Hall of Faith, those people who were the who were supposed to in some way look up to. All right. So here we go.
Hebrews chapter 11. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, for by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. So we need to ask ourselves three questions. A, what is this about? B, what is the second? No, what is the best verse to summarize and see what are we called to do? OK, so what is this about? OK, so this talks to us first about faith. What is faith?
Well, it says faith is the substance, the warp and the wolf, the kitties and the dogs, the whole kitten caboodle of the things that we hope for. God made us promises and we know that those promises are true. And so we hold on to them. It's a substance of things hoped for.
So it's a storm and God said you're going to have kittens. It's going to rain cats and dogs. Is that what you're getting at? Yeah, I know. But it's like, OK, we know this is going to happen in the future because God told it. And so we hold on to it. But it's the evidence of things not seen.
Can you see the future? Can you see heaven? Can you see Jesus? But do you know what Peter wrote in his letter? He said, though you have not seen him, yet you love him. Talking about Jesus. Have you seen Jesus? I've never seen Jesus. No, he's in heaven. He died 2,000 years ago and rose from the dead 2,000 years ago. I've never seen him with my eyeballs. Yet. Do I know that he's real? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Right.
And so it's it's evidence of things not seen. So what is faith? Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen or by it. The elders obtained a good testimony. Right, so the leaders, those who have gone before us and were older and wiser. They, people talk well about them because of their faith. Oh, yeah. When they were older. Yeah. Like grandma or even older than grandma. And we'll talk about some of those people coming up here in a second by faith. Here's another thing about faith, right?
By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, right? So God spoke and the world became. Did God need to make like when when God made the world, did he say, you know what, I think I think I need to go get some Play-Doh off my shelf over here. And that's how I'll make the world. No. Did he did he make the world from other things? No, he spoke, and by the word of his power, things became. Yeah. You want to know a fancy word for that? I'm going to give you a fancy word. I'll let you try to say it after me. Ready? It's Latin.
Ex nihilo. Ex nihilo. Yeah. Out of nothing. Yeah, God created everything out of nothing. God spoke. And it became. Did he say son? Yeah. Yeah. He spoke and this and the sun and the moon. Right. And God said, yeah. Yeah. Remember the first day and God said, let there be light in there was light. Let there be living creatures. And yeah, it's like God said in his in his God mind, he thought about kittens that let there be kittens. And guess what happened?
Kitten. Could you imagine having that? That's a lot of power, isn't it? Oh man, I think we'd have all sorts of funny, cute, sparkly animals if you were able to do that. We did have a kitten. Four kittens and we gave one away. You're right, we did give one away. Actually three. Yeah, we gave two away.
Okay, well, so it's only three verses. Which verse did you like best? Well, there's nothing that actually says about kittens, but you like God speaking things out of nothing? Okay, so verse 3. Yeah, I have verse 1 and 2 underlined, but let's talk about seek calling. What do you think this calls you to do? Do you think this teaches you about Jesus Christ or the covenant or calls you to do something? What do you think it teaches about Jesus Christ? OK, so I think this calls me to believe. To have faith. To trust the Lord that what he said is true. Oh, because it's no shave November, so I'm growing out my beard. Yeah, yeah. You get distracted by my beard as we were talking about it. Right.
I think we can trust in Jesus. that it's by Jesus. God has done all these things. Remember what he said in Hebrews chapter one. We'll end with this in Hebrews chapter one. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, through whom he also made the world. God made the world through Jesus.
Well, Mary and Joseph were, so the Holy Spirit had Mary have a baby and Joseph would have been considered something like his stepdaddy. Yeah, so he wasn't his biological father, but he was almost like his adopted father. Yeah, because Jesus was born of miraculous birth. not of natural or ordinary generation, as our confession would say. It wasn't born like you and me or created like you and me. It was created by Jesus in his humanity. His body was conceived of by the Holy Spirit.
And then why did they put him on the cross? Yeah, well, they put him on the cross because they thought he was a traitor to the country and a danger to the people. And so they they had him killed. And but Jesus knew that he was doing it to pay for our sins.
Yeah, but God, God made the world through that, Jesus. Yeah, Mary was at his his tomb, you're right. And the big rock Yeah, the big rock was moved from the mouth of the tomb. That's right. Jesus wasn't there. Mm hmm. Were you learning this from your Sunday school teacher? Oh, good. Good. That's a great story. It's one of the best stories ever told. And that Jesus is the one by whom God created the whole world. And have you seen that, Jesus? Nevermind, but do you love him? Yeah, that's hey, that's Oh They had leprosy Only one came back. Did that person have faith in Jesus? Yeah, that's right. Are you ready to pray?
OK, God, we thank you so much that you have given us faith in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord and Savior, by whom you created all things seen and unseen. Lord, we pray that you would please give us more faith. Thank you so much for the example of faith that you have given us and for the substance The object of our faith, Jesus Christ, though we have not seen him, Lord, yet we love him.
