Hebrews 10:1-4

Crime number two. Well, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We're at Hebrews chapter 10 verses 1 through 4 just four verses. Let's pray and we'll get into God's word. God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. We thank you for your Holy Spirit. We pray that you please teach us, encourage us, let us walk in your ways. Let us know who you are in Jesus's name. Amen. Alright Hebrews chapter 10 verses 1 through 4 Nathan you want to read?

The people who had the law with the shadow? Just talking about people of the Old Testament. Yeah. Yeah. So the priests and the people in the Old Testament, right, they had the tabernacle, they had the law, they had all the sacrifices and the priesthood and all those. But were they the true things? No. No. Right. They were a shadow of the good things to come and not the very image of the things. Right.
Can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, guess what they could never do? Did you catch it at the very end of verse one? Make those who approach perfect. No, every year, every year, they go back and make the sacrifice, go back and make the sacrifice, go back and make the sacrifice. As soon as the high priest makes sacrifice for his sins and for the people's, he comes out and, oh, it's a great day, right? Yom Kippur, it's a day of atonement.
That's wonderful. The next day, guess what? What? You got to look forward to the next year. You always look forward to, oh, well, next year, next year, maybe we'll be made perfect. Next year, our sins will be cleansed. Next year, next year, next year.
But guess what we get to rest in? Jesus. Yeah. Yeah. What's done. Exactly. Exactly. Right. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? Right. If if if your conscience was cleansed from sin. and the blood of animal sacrifices was good enough, then why keep making the sacrifices? Because they were never good enough, right? That's that's the whole point here. You're spot on.
For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sin, right? If they if this sacrifice was perfect, then they wouldn't struggle with their conscience as being burdened by sin anymore. So they have to go make those sacrifices again. But in the sacrifices, there is a reminder of sin every year. And then look at verse four. Well, it is not possible that the little balls and goats could take away since. What's that say? What's that mean? Sacrifices can't actually do. So why God give them?
Plainest to what what that your sins will Will be cleansed later. Okay, so you're waiting for your sins to be cleansed. Oh So they were waiting for their sins to be cleansed so you're waiting for your sins to be cleansed Was that they Well when they sacrifice these bulls were pointing to Jesus Placing them, but when Jesus died the people before that Jesus is covering Austin's future and past. Oh, so we it's almost like they looked forward to Christ and we look back to Christ So are we looking forward to Christ are we looking back to what Christ did Okay, so we're looking forward to the day that our sins will actually be forgiven? Or are they actually forgiven now? They are forgiven now, but we're still looking forward to Christ. Well, we are looking forward to Christ, but are we looking forward to our consciences being cleansed? Or are we... Kind. Hmm. So we're looking for the...
It's not a trick question. I think we have to be very clear about this, right? Our consciences are cleansed if we're in Christ. Our sins are dealt with. They're done. Right? It is finished. That's what Jesus said. Jesus made propitiation for us, right? There's no more enmity, no more enemy between us and God, right? We've been reconciled to him by the perfect sacrifice, by the unspotted, blemishless, perfect lamb, right?
That's done. So we do look back to the old. We look back to what Jesus did once for all, finished and done. But what you're talking about is we are looking forward to something, and that's looking forward to when we don't sin anymore. Right, not just our consciences being cleansed of the guilt of sin, but when we no longer are able to sin anymore. So you're right in that we're looking forward. We are looking forward to Jesus, looking forward to him coming, the fulfillment of his kingdom, things like that.
So do you think it was fair of God to just give them types and shadows in the Old Testament Yeah Okay, so what do you think is the best verse to summarize all this I Um, I would put one through four. One through four. You and your brother. What am I going to do with you guys? It's kind of like, it's like such a short passage. You're like, okay, what part of this one verse do you think is, what best verse do you summarize in the best part of this verse?
Yeah, yeah, I see what you mean I have verse 1 the first part of verse 1 underlined and the second part of verse 2 underlined and verse 4 underlined So yeah, okay, that's fine What would you say you are called to do or how does this show you Christ or what is this talking about with the covenant? What do you think that it's calling us to look know that our sins have been forgiven and we don't need to be worried if we've been good enough to get in the future this but it's already been paid for truly quite Okay, good.
So, you know what the Westminster Shore catechism calls that saving faith Resting and receiving in Jesus alone for salvation No, it's good it's good man, right so yeah, we should we can receive and rest in Jesus alone for salvation It's a huge blessing, huh? So you ready to go rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and have sacrifices again? Should daddy start saying that, you know, when we take communion, that this is a true sacrifice of Jesus again? No, right?
We can have confidence that this is one and done. Our consciences can be cleansed. We can rest in Jesus's finished work. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for the time together to spend in your word. We thank you for the finished work of Jesus. And Father, we pray that we would love you, walk in your ways. Please, Lord, care for us this day in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, may you trust in Jesus Christ alone His work is truly finished As he said to that thief on the cross today, you will be with me in paradise Because Jesus knew that his work would be done.
