Joel 1:1-12

Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?

Joel 1:5-7

Bryan selects verses 5-7 because they join the command to awaken and mourn with the invading nation that strips God's vine and fig tree bare.

C — Called or Christ

C — Called to Do & Christ Connection

Reject idols, take sin seriously, and examine your life rather than assuming you have no sin. Confess sin and seek safety in Jesus, the gracious Lion of Judah, shepherd, Savior, and champion.

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. We continue on with our J's. We finished Jeremiah, we finished 2 John, and now we are at the prophet of Joel. Joel, that's right. So we're gonna do the first 12 verses. So let's get into what this prophet of Joel has to say. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's word. Is it hot? Don't be drinking all my coffee, okay? All right, you ready to pray? All right, you want to pray or you want me to pray?
Okay. Okay god, thank you so much for time together. Thank you for your word. Thank you for Giving us your truth and we pray that your holy spirit would please help us to understand it Please lord, we need you you to be our teacher and the one who applies your word to our lives in jesus's name. Amen
All right, dan dan. You want to read verses one? Uh one two and three 1, 2, 3. The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel, hear this, you elders, and give you inhabitants of the land. Has any like this happened in your days or even in the days of your fathers? Tell your children about it. Let your children tell their children and their children another generation.
Alright, so, give ear to what the Lord's doing. Nothing's happened like this before and people are going to tell their kids and their kids are going to tell their kids and the story's going to keep on going, right? So, here we go. I'm going to read and you're going to tell me what it was about, okay? You ready? What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten. And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.
Alright, so what's that saying? In verse 4. The swarming locust had... Is there anything left in the fields? The locust. Yeah, the locust. But any produce? Nope. Nope. And what the swarming locust has earned, what the swarming locust left, the crawling locust had 18. And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust had 18. Yeah, right. Waves and waves and waves of locusts eating everything. Ugh.
Awake, you drunkards, and weep. And wail, all you drinkers of wine. Because of the new wine, for it has been cut off from your mouth. For a nation has come up against my land, strong and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he has the fangs of a fierce lion. He has laid waste my vine and ruined my fig tree. He has stripped it bare and thrown it away. It's branches are made white.
Alright, so God's talking here and he's calling them like drunkards that need to weep and mourn because what's happened? They are being destroyed. Yeah, they're being destroyed, that's right.
lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth the grain offering and the drink offering have been cut off from the house of the lord the priests mourn who minister to the lord the field is wasted the land mourns for the grain is ruined the new wine is dried up the oil fails Be ashamed, you farmers! Wail, you vine dressers, for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished, the vine has dried up, and the fig tree has withered, the pomegranate tree, and the palm tree also, and the apple tree. All the trees of the field are withered. Surely joy has withered away from the sons of men."
Well, what is that talking about? Um, everything's gone. I couldn't survive without apples. You couldn't survive without apples, right? Apples are too good. They should be weeping and wailing, right? Yeah, all this disaster has come. Well, we know from elsewhere in the Bible, why did all this disaster come? To survive. What do you mean, because of them? They worshipped other idols. Yeah, they worshipped other idols, and so God brought this disaster, right? And the land is laid waste. Okay. What do you think is the best verse to summarize this section? If you had to point to one verse that you think summarizes this, what would you underline? Three. What's that? Three. Three. Tell your children about it. Let your children. Yeah. Let your children know how God, furious God is about other idols. Yeah, I like verses 5, 6, and 7 myself, but I can see what you mean by that.
Alright, so what do you think you're called to do? So we did A, what's this about? God is telling them to weep because the land is being consumed and destroyed. B, best verse, you said verse 3, I said 5, 6, and 7. So what do you think you're called to do in response to this? Not worry about the Bible. Okay, now you're so you're you're called not to worship other idols. Yeah, right. Maybe this is telling me to be sober. To actually realize when bad things happen, to actually question, have I been faithful to the Lord? Or are these bad things, now bad things don't always happen because we can look at Job and we can see sometimes bad things happen just because we live in a sinful world, but we can also look at things when things aren't going well and we can evaluate like I need to check my own life. Maybe things aren't going well in our family because I'm not doing well with our family. Maybe things aren't going well at church because I'm being sinful in areas. Maybe things aren't going well with life because I'm being wrong and sinful. I think this is a good heart check. I think as Christians we're called not to be those who act like we don't have any sin because then we Deceive ourselves and make God a liar But we can confess our sins and he's faithful. He's just to forgive us our sins, right?
Yeah, you got anything else you want to talk about oh You think this points you to Jesus Christ? Oh, yeah. How's it pointed to Jesus? Oh that God doesn't stand and worship, than worshiping other idols. Yeah, he's not going to be mocked, is he? No. I think this points me to Christ in a few ways, right? One, I deserve this type of destruction, yet God is gracious, and he shows that grace in Jesus.
But the other is interesting here, right? He says, whenever I hear of the lion, I always think of Jesus, the lion of the tribe of Judah. Right? Judah? Yep. Judah! Yeah, not your brother Judah. Well, Judah's giant, so. Judah's a giant, Judah.
Notice verse 6. for a nation has come up against my land, strong and without number. His teeth are teeth of a lion, and he has fangs of a fierce lion." Right, and I think God compared, I'm guessing this is Babylon here. He's comparing Babylon to a lion, and I wonder and think about Jesus, who's bigger and powerful and more strong than Nebuchadnezzar ever was. He's the sheep. Yeah, and yet he cares for us, doesn't he? The lion of the tribe of Judah is our champion, and he cares for us. He's the shepherd. Yeah. Yeah, he's a lion who lies down with the sheep. Yep. Babylon that eats the sheep. Yeah, but Will he lie down with everyone with a lion? No, he will consume though right who are Evil at the last great day
Well, Judah is a giant. Well, you're baby brother Judah. She might have got it from the name Judah. You should just name all your children Judah. So we can become giants like Judah. I should have had Judah 1, Judah 2, and Judah 3. And then Judah 4, and then Judah 5.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. How many babies do you want us to have? We already have five. We already have five.
Oh, okay. All right, you ready to pray? Yep. Would you like to pray or you want me to pray? You can.
Okay. God, thank you so much for warning us, Lord, and giving us the blessing of hearing your truth that you won't be mocked and that there is judgment that comes and we ought to weep and lament, Lord, when we hear of churches who are being persecuted and destroyed, when we hear of people who are suffering because of their own sin. Lord, we pray that you would forgive us for our sins. We pray that we would follow after you. Lord, we pray that you would please help us to know who you are and to walk in your ways. You are a good God. And so we pray that we would find our safety in Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Thank you for your love for us. Lord, we pray that you would keep us as we hear your fatherly chastisement about how serious you take sin. Help us, Lord, to hate sin and to love you. In Jesus's name we pray. Amen.
Well, may God bless you. May you walk in the joy of holiness and take comfort in Jesus, your lion, savior and champion. We'll see you next time. Bye.
