Genesis 37:1–11

This is where Dan Dan and I are going to get into God's word. And we'll grow in our love for the Lord together. And this year 2023. Lord will who will make it from Genesis to Leviticus Can you say Leviticus? Leviticus, that's a big word, Leviticus. Why don't we pray and we'll get into God's Word. God, we thank you so much for this day, and we pray that you would please bless us as we read your word. Please help us to not just read it, but also to understand it. And we pray that Your Holy Spirit would apply it to our lives in Jesus's name, Amen. Okay, you ready? So we are at Genesis 37 Genesis 37. All right, so Genesis chapter 37. You sit way down here. So Genesis 37. And this morning we start a new portion. In the book of Genesis, we pick up the genealogy of Jacob. Now isn't that interesting? We already know Jacobs wives and all his children. But now the toilet dirt the story is of as of Jacob, and what's going to happen in his life. You ready? All right. I'll let you read the first verse and then I'll read the rest. Okay. Good tried Jacob. Al, in da, man. Wow. As fathers wives, a strain on stranger in Canaan. You can read this part two. This is the S. stock history. The history of Jacob Great. Joseph being 70 years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the land was the land was in the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah. His father's wives, and Joseph brought a bad report to His Father. Now Israel loved the Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colors. And when his brother saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers. They hated them. Why? They hated him, and could not speak peacefully to him. Is this a good? You think this is gonna go? Well? No, it was his daddy playing favorites. Nope. Yeah, his daddy was playing favorites. Oh, yeah. Jacob is loving Joseph more than all of his other brothers. Oh, and that jealous? Yeah, they're gonna get jealous. Now, when Joseph had a dream, and told it to his brothers, and they hated him even more. What? Yeah. So he said to them, please hear this dream which I have dreamed. There we were binding the sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright, and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf. Yeah, what do you think that's what do you think that means? A Shiva is like where they gathered up all the all the wheat together, and he said my sheet was bigger than all of yours and your sheets bowed down to my sheet. What do you think the meaning of that dream is? That he's more important than them? Yeah. Wonder I was brothers are going to respond to that. Yeah, that's right. Verse eight. And his brother said to him, shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us? So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. This is going well for him. Nope. Verse nine. Then he dreams still another dream and told it to his brothers and said, Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time the sun the moon and the 11 stars bowed down to me. What do you think that one's meaning that is meaning he's like that. He's like, it's Dodman. Oh, you're good, man. Yeah, all right. It means like he's crazy important in the world and the sun in the moon. Who do you think those are? Who do you think those represent? Well, let's start with the 11 stars who did? The 11 stars represent? 11 states now the 11 brothers. Yeah, so they're all going about down and so if it's the 11 brothers, and then the moon and the star and the Sun, who do you think the moon in the store or in the sun would be? Jacob's mom and his father, Joseph, Mom and Dad. Yeah. Yeah. So he told it to his father and his brothers, and his father rebuked him and said, What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the earth before you and his brothers envied him? But his father kept the matter in his mind. So we come to the story of Joseph the genealogy of Joseph. And as we come to this genealogy, it starts off with a story and it tells us about Joseph what's the relationship like between Joseph and his daddy Jacob? See, Jacob is the most important son. Well, Joseph is the most important son of Jacob. Joseph is the most important son and how does how does Jacob show everyone that he loves Joseph more than everyone else? Because he gives him a Colorado chart. He gives them a multicolored shirt or multicolored tunic robe Right? And how do his brothers feel about this? I leave and do you want sports get it? On oldest? Yeah, right. Reuben is older than him. Simeon so as Levi so as Neftali so it's Asher. So it was Dad. So it's so so so is right. All of them are older than him. He's the youngest. Well, he's second youngest. He has a little brother named Benjamin. But Joseph has this then. Then it's not just that he's a favorite but then he has two different dreams and what a both dreams mean. Most of heart, he's the most important in the family. That's right. And do his brothers like this. No. And be him. Yeah, does his daddy like it? First butum but he keeps it in mind. Because who gives his dreams? Us? Well part they happen in your brain, right? But when they're visionary dreams like this, they're coming from God. And so Jacob has had dreams before. Yeah. So he says, Hmm, I better think about this. Like Jacob didn't have the same dream. He did not have the same dreams. But God did come to Jacob in a dream and tell him the promises of the covenant. And so what we're gonna find out over the next 33 chapters, or 23 chapters. Over the next few months, we'll read the remaining 23 chapters. We'll find out today. No, not today. What we read over the next 23 chapters as God is going to keep his promises. And he's going to use some real funky ways to do it. Why queueing wi me in bed on his bang. Yeah, those are funky ways, aren't they? Yeah, that's what Jesus did. But we're gonna find out that Joseph is going to have to go to prison. He's gonna get sold as a slave. He's going to get passed over but guess what's going to happen? Spoiler alert. He's going to become the second most important man in Egypt and he's going to save his whole family. But we have to read how that happens. Okay. Can you eat it today? Not today. Let's go ahead and pray. Father, we thank You that You have shown us that you have one beloved son, his name is Jesus Christ and He is the ultimate fulfillment of these promises. But God we pray, thanking you that you are the one who gives these dreams and visions and you made them come to pass. These are real stories, real people real events, real history, even though they might not be fun for the people living through it, Lord and when we are living through things in our lives that aren't fun.
