Exodus 13:1-16

hey hey friends good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this is for every day you and I we get together we have a little bit of coffee we get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together and this year 2022 Lord willing will make it from Genesis to Leviticus today we're at Genesis chapter 13. we got the first 16 verses to look at why don't we have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into God's word let's pray Lord it is a great blessing to get to come to your word it's a joy to get to learn from you father we pray that as we read your word that you would please bless it to us we pray that your Holy Spirit would instruct Us in Jesus name amen all right so we are at Exodus chapter 13. the first 16 verses last time we were together we looked at chapter 12. with the institution of the Passover that's going to continue on with a couple ongoing things with the cereal then the Lord spoke to Moses saying consecrate to me all the firstborn whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel both of man and Beast it is mine and Moses said to the people remember this day in which you went out of Egypt out of the house of bondage by the strength of the hand of Jehovah brought you out of this place no leavened bread shall be eaten on this day you are going out in the month of abib and it shall be when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the amorites and the hivites and the jebusites which he swore to your fathers to give you a land flowing with milk and honey that you shall keep this service in this month seven days you shall eat unleavened bread and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to Jehovah unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days and no leavened bread shall be seen among you nor shall eleven be seen among you in all your quarters and you shall tell your son in that day saying this is done because of what Jehovah did for me when I came up from Egypt it shall be as a sign to you on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes that the Lord that the Lord the Lord's law may be in your mouth for with a strong hand Jehovah has brought you out of Egypt you shall therefore keep this ordinance in its season from year to year and it shall be when the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites as he swore to you and your fathers and gives it to you that you shall set apart to the Lord all that the open wound all that opens the womb that is every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have the male shall be the Lord's but every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb and if you will not redeem it then you shall break its neck and all the firstborn of man among your sons shall be redeemed so it shall be when your son asks you in time to come saying what is this that you shall say to him by strength of hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt out of the house of bondage and it came to pass when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go that the Lord killed the firstborn all the firstborn in the land of Egypt both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of Beast therefore I sacrifice to the Lord all males that open the womb but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem I set them so it shall be as a sign on your hand as frontlets between your eyes or by the strength of the hand of Jehovah brought us out of Egypt well we just kind of have a little bit of preview here right they are still in Egypt they're about to leave and we need to ask ourselves what's this passage about right well God is giving them a holiday quite literally a holiday right he's he's already told them all about the Passover how they're supposed to eat the Passover and now he tells them two different facets two things that they're going to do into perpetuity right from here on out the Passover was specifically that that lamb who was Celine and there's kind of this merger here in history between almost like one Festival to acts the Passover and then the week of unleavened bread and so this is two but they're they're having one right after the other right act one sacrifice the past or Slaughter the Passover Lamb act two eat unleavened bread for a week and in between these is this consecration of the firstborn why does God have this right what what is what is this going on here this this is meant to memorialize who God is and what he did for his people God is institutionalizing a holiday for them that once a week every year they are going to remember that it was God it was God himself who redeemed his people he rescued them with his mighty right hand he saved them he's the one who spared their firstborn no it's interesting they're firstborn have to be consecrated to the Lord all their man all their sons all their beasts of Burden right all their animals all the firstborn that opened the womb he says they're mine this is a rightfully mine I could have destroyed them but I saved them and so out of a heart of not just obedience but also of loyalty and love you're going to offer them up to me now this does not mean that they are going to offer up their firstborn Sons as sacrifice right but they're going to give their firstborn Sons and say they are the Lords and they are going to take them to the temple they actually have to dedicate them to the life of God this is actually if you're ever interested go read about this but this is why some people say that Jesus was going up to the temple for his bar mitzvah I don't necessarily think that's what was going on especially when he first visits the temple as a very young boy when he's I think his circumcision was also the day that Mary and Joseph are also taking him to the temple and they're taking him to keep this where he needs to be set aside for the Lord's work sometimes this did look like a total setting aside I think this is what Hannah realizes that she's going to take Samuel and have him be totally devoted to the Lord but all of this is meant to be this picture year after year so much so that you're you're teaching your children and notice doesn't matter what generation it is and you shall tell your son in that day this was done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up out of Egypt and it shall be that's what the Lord did for me this is how God redeemed me he brought me up out of Egypt he brought me up out of slavery there to give the testimony of what God had done for them it's a beautiful institution it's the first really law that God's setting out is a holiday he said you're gonna go into the land I'm gonna give you all the land this is what's going to happen I'm filling the promises you remember what I promised to Abraham Isaac and Jacob it's coming through guys here it is and when you go you need to remember that it was me it was God himself who brought you up out of Egypt brought you into this land and gave it to you as a free gift and you need to remember that it's the Lord who did this what's the best verse to summarize this well I have verse 8 and 9 underlined I also have verse 16 underlined uh and I'm my underlying verse two those are the different ones I have underlined maybe you would underline something different but what are we called to do in responses we need to remember right we need to remember that God redeemed us not out of Egypt but out of sin in bondage now I'm not a big fan of telling your testimony in a way in which it just seems like he who has the biggest and baddest and worst past wins right that's that's horrible but we ought to be able to tell our children this is what God did for me what Jesus did to redeem us from sin and death from the slavery of sin is something we ought to be telling our children about they had to be seeing us taking the Lord's table going to him and eating of the of that bread and and the bread and wine that is his new covenant a New Covenant in his blood and we should be able to tell our children and all those around us this is what Jesus did for me that's how he brought me out of my sin this is why we have this remembrance that Jesus gives us now and so that's what I'm going to encourage you every week he calls us together to remember him to encourage each other to love one another and as often as we eat and drink of that cup and and and that bread we do so to remember him and remember that he's coming again so I'm gonna encourage you today to remember God's Redemption for you I'm gonna encourage you to Think Through how will you prepare yourself for the next time you come to the Lord's table to eat and drink in a worthy manner as you rightly discern the body and blood of the Lord what has he done for you how has he redeemed you and how is that to influence your life we have a great Redeemer we have a king who is truly saved us let's pray father we thank you for the great work of redemption that you have accomplished in our lives even better than parting the Red Sea even better than conquering Pharaoh you defeated sin and death and Satan and you have given us freedom you have promised us that we will also enter into your Promised Land but a kingdom not made by human hands Lord we pray that you would please let us live in light of what you have done for us in Jesus name amen well may God bless you may you cherish the Redemption that Jesus has purchased for you by his own blood and I'll see you
