Deuteronomy 3:12- 22

hey hey good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we're at Numbers Chapter Numbers Deuteronomy we're at Deuteronomy chapter 3: 12 through 22 we're going to talk about the land on the trans Jordan on the Eastern side of the Jordan being divided up so this is still moses' speech his historical prologue or pre-log before what's going on so let's go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into God's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this today and we thank you for your word Lord we pray that you would please help us as we read your word we pray that your spirit would be with us teaching us instructing us guiding us and teaching us the way in which we should go Lord we pray that you would turn our eyes most of all toward your glory and toward your son in jesus' name amen all right here we go numbers numbers I'm so used to numbers we've been we've in numbers for a long time all right Deuteronomy chapter 3: 12-22 and this land which we possessed at that time from Aurora which is by the river Arnon and half the mountains of Gilead and its cities I gave to the reubenites and the gadites the rest of Gilead and all Bashan the kingdom of OG I gave to half the tribe of Manasseh all the region of argob with all bation was called the land of the Giants jir the son of manasse took all the Generation all the region of argob as far as the border of the gites and the maites and called Bashan after his own name havo jir to this day I also gave Gilead to makir and to the reubenites and the gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the river Arnon the middle of the river as the Border as far as the river jabak the border of the people of Ammon the plain also with the Jordan as the border from chin as far as the east side of the Sea of the araba the salt sea below the slopes of Pisa then I commanded you at that time saying the Lord your God has given you this land to possess all you Men of Valor shall cross over armed before your brethren the children of Israel but your wives your little one and your livestock I know that you have much livestock shall stay in your cities which I have given you until the Lord has given rest to your brethren as to you and they also have possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them beyond the Jordan then each of you may return to his own possession which I have given you and I commanded Joshua at that time saying your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings so will the Lord do to all the kingdoms which through which you pass you must not fear them for the Lord your God himself fights for you well we need to ask ourselves are three questions a what is this about B what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to this so a what's this about again remember this is Moses he's talking he's saying this is what happened here's things here's what's going on just the last two times we've met they defeated zhon King and they def defeated OG King of the basanites now they're dividing up that land and he's telling them the different B the different borders right so Ruben gets this Gad gets this ha manasse gets that he delineates where the borders were for that this is all historical past right this is recent history this is what I have done this is what I did following the Lord this is what you all have done and now right he's also saying I also commanded you guys to make sure when you go into the land right that those two and a half tribes on the trans Jordan on the Eastern side of the Jordan they can keep their families and their cattle and all that in the cities but the guys they got to go to battle they need to fight with the rest of Israel and all the land is conquered then they can go back home and then he concludes this section with verses 21 and 22 and by the way I think this is the best verse to summarize this is what I think is at the heart of this passage and I commanded Joshua at that time saying your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings so will the Lord do to all the kingdoms through which you passed you must not fear them for the Lord your God himself fights for you so verses 21 and 22 I think are at the heart of this right God has done all these things do not fear for the Lord your God fights for you right he tells Joshua to put his hope in The God Who has done things historically past who he is and what he promises to do and I think that's what we see calling we are called to do right we trust what God has has historically done in the past we believe in a god of History he made promises to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob he made promises to Noah he made promises to David he made promises to his people they have come true in Jesus Jesus truly did suffer and die under Pontius Pilate was buried and on the third day rose again from the dead he appeared to hundreds and hundreds of people and he ascended up into heaven and he has sat down at the right hand of God the Father Almighty and he will come again to judge the living and the dead and so we have a faith rooted in historical past with present implications and a future hope but our hope is even better than what they had received here our the promises are better the Fulfillment is even better and so we have the same pattern in our lives so we're called to that same faith that same faith that has an object the object is our God specifically in Jesus Christ who we can trust will fight for us and has even conquered even death itself and someday right dday has been one but someday VE day is coming but someday the final Victory will arrive and Jesus Christ will reign supreme let's pray father we thank you so much that you do not just give us a pie in the sky type Faith you don't just give us promises without any reason to believe but Lord you are our God who has worked in history you've done amazing things and you have even risen from the dead Lord and because of that we have hope and so father we pray that you would please let us know that you are still with us that your Holy Spirit dwells in us and that the promises which are yet to be fulfilled are good because you are good and you do not lie Lord we pray these things in Jesus's name amen well may the Lord bless you may you be filled with hope and peace as you look to Jesus Christ the great author and finisher of your faith I'll see you next time bye
