Deuteronomy 28:1-14

You done stretching there? Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotion this morning where I do Deuteronomy chapter 28 verses 1 through 14. Going to be talking about the blessings of obedience. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. Can I have some? It's all cold. I'm sure you can have some. Okay, stop. Stop. Stop. You even dribbling down on yourself, man. You little Man, you coffee fiend. Does it have caffeine? A little bit. All right, Deuteronomy. You can't even taste caffeine. Oh, yeah, it does. Deuteronomy 28. No, you can't. It's flavorless. But it is. Coffee is flavorless? Yes. Okay, we're going to read from here to here. Okay? Deuteronomy 28 verses 1 through 14. pray. God, thank you so much, Tom, for the time that we have to spend together now. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the blessing it is to get to follow after you. Lord, we pray that you would please help us as we read your word, that we would understand it, that you would help us know how it applies to our lives in Jesus's name. Amen. Amen. Deuteronomy chapter 28. Okay. Uh Daniel, uh I'm going to have you read verse 3. Here we go. Verse 3. Now it came to pass Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all his commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you because you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Okay. Blessed shall you be in the city and blessed shall you be in the country. Country you can Blessed shall That's right. Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground, and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle, and the offspring of your flocks. You can read verse 5. Blessed shall be your buh buh uh shk. Basket. Blessed shall be your basket. And your uh Well, that's a hard one cuz it starts with a K. Kneading bowl. Why don't you read the next one? You'd be good. Blessed shall you you be when you come into when you come in and blessed shall you be when you go out. The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated because before your face. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. Can you read verse 8? This is longer than the Lord will com mand to bless us your The Lord will command the blessing. Why don't you put your finger on it while you read? The Lord will command the blessing and on he will The Lord will command the blessing on you in in store in your storehouses land which the Lord your God I know. and in all to which you set your hand and he will bless you in the land which the Lord your God has given you. Okay. The Lord will establish you as a holy people to himself just as he has sworn to you. If you keep your the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways, then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord and they shall be afraid of you. And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods in the fruit of your body and the increase of your livestock and in the produce of your ground and the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. The Lord will open to you open to you his good treasure, the heavens, to give you the rain on your land in your seasons. And to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail. And you shall be above only and not be beneath. If you heed the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today and are careful to observe them, so you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day to the right hand or to the left to go after other gods to serve them. All right, so we got three questions. A, what is this about? about? B, what's the Best way to not summarize. the best way first to summarize? And C, what are we not called to do? All right, I don't like that. Why don't we actually turn to it right now? What are we called to do? All right, All right, so what do you think this is A about? Uh God will not forsake you. I don't I don't remember reading that. What do you mean by that? That he will not will give you food. Oh, that's what you meant by that. Yeah. So, if they kept his law, he would bless them. Yeah, he would bless them, right? So, he would he would bless their fields. No. He'd give them rain. He'd give them food. He'd give them livestock. Give them homes, right? If they kept his his laws, he would do those things for him for them. Adam and Eve didn't. Well, yeah, Adam and Eve didn't. Uh but God has had made all these good promises to them. What do you think would have been good for them to do? Not listen to the serpent. Well, yeah, but I'm talking about the people in Israel right now. They're about to go into the promised land. They will take the promised land and it would have been good for them to listen to God because God would do what? He would bless them, right? He would bless them. Is he going to hold back good things from them that they should have? No. No. Right? Guess what? Verse 14. So, you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day to the right hand or to the left to go after other gods to serve them. Cuz if they're not keeping God's commandments, what might they be tempted to do? Go serve other Go serve other gods. What will bless them? Guess what the Jewish people did. They went and Yeah, they went and served other gods. Daddy and my devotions are reading through Jeremiah right now. And time and time and time again, the charge against God's people is they forsook the Lord and they went and they served other gods. Why did they do that? Why do you sin? I don't know. Has God told you that you're supposed to honor your mommy and daddy? Let's not touch that. Yep. And and you do that perfectly every day, right? No. God's told you to love your brothers and sisters, right? You love your neighbor as yourself. And you never get in any fights, do you? No, I never get in fights. When you know, at the end of the day, we're not even though God holds out all these blessings, right? God tells Daddy to love Jesus or love my wife as Jesus loves the church. And do I love Mommy perfectly? Sometimes do I get impatient? Mhm. Is that loving? God tells me to not exasperate you guys, right? Not provoke you to wrath. But sometimes am I impatient and not gentle? Most times. Most times. Ouch. Indictment. Uh you've caused me emotional damage. Uh but the point is, right? Like Why do we sin even though we know that there's blessings in following God's law? I don't know. I think it's cuz I think it's because we're children of Adam and Eve. So, we still have sinful hearts. Let's we're going to wrap this up here, okay? Please. We're children of Adam and Eve. We still have sinful hearts. Yeah. And so we need the Holy Spirit to turn us more and more away from our sin to see the sinfulness of it, to hate that sin, and to love Jesus more. Uh-huh. Yep, so I think that's what we're called to do. There's there's blessings in obedience, isn't there? Oh, yeah. There's a lot of blessings. So, you ready to pray? I think you're tired. Maybe you need to go take a nap. No, it's the middle of the school day. Let's pray. Let's pray. God, we thank you so much for Jesus Christ. Lord, we know that there is great blessing in following in your ways. But Father, we confess to you that sometimes we don't even know why we sin. We often don't check our hearts. We often just get busy doing our own things rather than following after you. Please, God, forgive us. Forgive us for following the idols of our hearts. Turn us from our sin and let us love you. Let us love Jesus. Please, Lord, let us abide in him. Repent of sin and bear much good fruit in keeping with that repentance in Jesus' name. Amen. All right, Daniel says, "Bye." Bye.
