Scripture Passage
“When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, when she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man’s wife, if the latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife, then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.”

A — About
What Is This Passage About?
Moses regulates divorce in a hard-hearted society: it requires a legal certificate, and a woman who has entered another marriage cannot later return to her first husband. The law restrains evil, protects women, and upholds marriage's value rather than presenting divorce as ideal.
B — Best Verse
Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?
Deuteronomy 24:1
Deborah explicitly chooses verse 1, and Bryan affirms it as the important first part because it establishes the regulated legal process rather than casual abandonment.
C — Called or Christ
C — Christ Connection
Value lifelong marriage and treat divorce as a grave matter while recognizing the biblical grounds Bryan names. Christ loves his church like a faithful husband who bought his bride with his own blood and will never discard her.

all right there you go all right good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we're at Deuteronomy chapter 24: 1 through four man that camera is really shaking all over the place isn't it yeah all right why we're at Deuteronomy chapter 24: 1 through four these are laws about divorce so let's go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray we'll get into God's word no thank you not going to go for it let's pray God thank you so much for time together thank you for your word Lord we pray that you would please help us as we read your word please teach us Lord we pray that you would soften us Lord let us love what you love teach us Lord by your Holy Spirit to put on righteousness and to walk in your ways in Jesus's name we pray amen all right Deuteronomy CH 24: 1 through four and you're going to read go ahead when a man takes a wife and marries her and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her he writes her a certificate of divorce puts it in her hand and sends her out of this house when she has departed from this house and goes and becomes another man's wife if the latter husband tests her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of the house or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled for it is AB an Abomination before the Lord and you shall not bring Sin Sin on the land which the Lord your God has given you as an inheritance okay so we got three questions to ask ourselves a what is this about B what's the first to summarize good and C what are we told to do all right so a what is this about break it down for me girl okay so it's about divorce so a man is married to a woman and there's something unfavorable that he finds in her what must he do he must send her away can he just say get out of my house no he has to write her a divorce certificate okay so it to her and then tell her to get okay yeah it doesn't sound very loving does it so uh but this is right it there has to be a legal process for actually divorcing in Israel but if you divorce her what happens if you divorce her and then she goes and marry someone else and that person divorces her or dies then you can't take her as your wife yeah right because now she's been bound to another man and so you can't you can't be doing that type of stuff right so even in this the Lord's trying to restrain their evil right so Jesus is actually challenged by the disciples or by by the people at his time about this do you know that yeah so the so the people in Jesus's time the Jewish people said well Moses said that we just need to issue a certificate of divorce and Jesus said Moses told you that because of the hardness of your own heart but it wasn't so from the beginning and this is where Jesus instructs us on marriage right who married Adam and Eve God God did and that's that picture for marriage and so what God has joined together let no man right let no man tear aunder right rip apart right so uh yeah so Jesus says that Moses is giving us the this commandment not because this is the perfect scenario but women still needed protected marriages still need to you couldn't just dissolve a marriage easily and so they were God was restraining the kind the evils in their hearts trying to teach them that marriage was supposed to be this beautiful picture and not something where you just pass around women like trading cards guess we don't really have trading cards today do we um maybe passing them around like memes texting each other I don't know what you but but the women are supposed to be valued marriage is supposed to be highly valued is the point right so what do you think is the best verse to summarize this section um probably the first verse okay yeah that's good good yeah so it's kind of two parts but yeah the first the first part is important well let's talk about C calling so what are we called to do uh what is the is talking about with Covenant and how does this show us Jesus Christ good one oh it's the same one I ask every day um probably that divorce isn't easy and you don't really have a second chance well I think there are times for a Biblical divorce right Jesus even talks about that right if any man divorces his wife except for sexual immorality right and so I think there's a sexual immorality and then Paul also tells us in the book of First Corinthians about a unbelieving spouse who deserts their husband or wife right so if if you're married to a non-Christian and they they I I don't want to have anything to do with you they leave then you're free from that marriage right so so there are there does seem to be two legitimate reasons for divorce right uh and so we can talk about those implications some other time right but you're right that we should try to as much as we can hold to lifelong marriage don't sometimes you don't have a second chance that's true but I think the point is that it's it's upholding marriage how does that happen anything to do with Jesus I'm thinking like you can't just divorce Jesus from your life okay you can't just divorce Jesus from your life I hav thought about that way you want to know what picture Jesus uses for How He Loves Us husbands love your own wives as Christ loves the church Jesus loves his people like a husband loves his wife and is Jesus just going to go get away from me I don't care about you no oh he bought us with his own precious blood right so would he just like ah I don't want them anymore no right so this is this is this beautiful picture of even how Jesus loves us and so uh I think this is actually a good picture for why I would encourage young women right find somebody who loves Jesus because hopefully they'll love you like Jesus loves the church right and so I think there's all sorts of applications from this don't marry a guy who would want a prenuptual agreement because he's worried that maybe he'll divorce you someday sound good all right you ready to pray yeah do you want to or do you want me to you want to pray sure okay go ahead Lord thank you for this day thank you for um marriage please let us use it wisely and not um go from one thing to another um in Jesus's name amen amen or May the Jesus Christ who loves us loves you perfectly comfort you and care for you may you love him all your life and we'll see you next time say bye bye bye
