All right. Well, it's not time to be silly. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning, we're at Deuteronomy, Chapter 21, verses 22 and 23, just two verses. We're going to have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into the God's Word. Today, it's about curses. Anyone who hangs upon a tree. You're going to have coffee. It's very hot. Be careful. Oh, OK. You want to drink your milk instead? All right. Good job. All right.
Let's pray. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for time to spend together and to be in your word. Lord, we pray that you would please help us, help us to understand your word. Give us your spirit. Yeah, that we could understand your word and it might be applied to our heart. Jesus's name. Amen. All right. You ready? Just two verses. If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight. Yeah, not remain overnight.
You know that word? Tree. but you shall surely that's right but you shall surely bury him that day so that you do not defile the land which the lord your god is giving you as an inheritance for he who is hanged yeah that's ass for he who is hanged is accursed of god okay so we have our abc is a what is this B, what is the best thing to summarize the best verse to summarize and see what are we called to do? If any man commits a sin deserving of death and you hang him on the tree, what do they have to do before it gets dark? they have to take him off the tree. They have to take his body off the tree, right? For accursed, right? That's what it says here. For he who is hanged is accursed of God. So they don't want to defile the land.
So they want to take down the body from the tree. So if somebody murders someone or they're... this is specifically after a part where it says that there's a son who's disobedient to his parents. He's a drunkard and he's lazy and he's a brawler, that type of guy, right? He's that type of son to be put to death.
Right. So if you're going to put anybody to death because they've done all these bad sins, you've got to take down their body from the tree before it gets dark. But I think the best verse to summarize this. Right. Could be verse 23, but I think the very end of 23 is what I have underlined. For he who is hanged is accursed of God. Now, why do you think Daddy has that underlined? Because in the New Testament, this is said about Jesus. He became a curse for us. That we might become the righteousness of God. Yeah, yeah. So Jesus, was Jesus guilty or was he innocent? He was innocent. But did he die on a tree? Did they hang him on a tree?
Yeah. Made out of wood, right? Yeah, made out of the wood of a tree. Well, it's not a cross with leaves, it's made out of the wood from a tree. Right, and so he's made from the wood, from a tree. But the New Testament says a curse is everyone who is hanged upon a tree.
And he took our sins. On him and became a curse for us. Yeah, right. Are we the ones who sinned against God? Oh, yes, we have. Have you ever disobeyed mommy and daddy? Have you ever stolen something? Even something small from your brother or sister? Have you have you ever told a lie? Have you ever gotten so mad at somebody that you've hit them? Yeah, God says that if we are those who have broken his law We deserve death for the wages of sin is death So we are those who deserve death But what did Jesus do for us?
Yeah, he died for us Yeah, was that good No, was I? Yeah, it was a glorifying to God. No, right. That's why that's what the Bible saying all week, all we like sheep have gone astray. Each of us have followed our own way. Did you want to follow God's way at that point? Yeah, right, you followed in a in a wicked way, right? But guess what? The Bible says the wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord. He died on the cross to take away our sins. Yeah, God made him a curse for us.
So we could praise him rather than be cursed. Pretty good news, huh? It's not weird, it's good news. Very good news, right? It's not weird, it's what God planned. You ready to pray? All right, Lord, thank you so much. That you loved us so much that you sent your son to die for us. To become a curse for us. that we might inherit your righteousness.
